Parking System
The rear acoustic park assist system is integrated
in the rear of the vehicle and the rear view cam­
era is integrated in the rear lid~
page 107 .
A WARNING
The rear view camera has blind spots , in which
objects cannot be detected. Be especially
careful to check fo r small ch ildren and ani ­
mals before backing up . Small children a nd
animals will not a lways be detected by the
sen sors .

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers . If these
detect an obstacle, audible s ignals warn you . The
range a t which t he sensors beg in to measu re is
approx ima tely:

Distance warning when reversing sta rts when an
obstacle is detected in the range of the pa rking

assist system. As the distan ce decreases, t he
time interval between the audib le tones becomes
sho rter.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0 .30 m), the
tone becomes cont inuo us. At th is point you
shou ld stop backing up .
If the distance to an obstacle stays t he sa me , the
vo lume of the dis tan ce signal chime is g radua lly
reduced after a bout 4 seconds (does not a ffect
the continuous signal tone) . Approaching anoth­
er obstacle will cause the distance s ignal to
sound again at the normal volume.
Rear view camera coverage area
The M MI display shows t he area cove red by the

MMI display.
We recommend tha t you prac tic e parking wit h
the rear v iew camera in a t raffic -free location or
parking lot to become familiar with the system,
the orientat ion lines, and their function . When
do ing th is, there should be good light and weath­
er condit ions.
In the MMI display, objects or vehicles appear closer or further away if:
- you a re dr iv ing in reve rse gear from a level s ur­
face onto an incline, or a downward slope,
- you a re dr iving in reve rse gear tow ard prot rud­
ing objects,
- t he vehicle is car rying too much load in the
rear.
The acc uracy of the or ie ntation lines and blue
s ur faces dim inishes if:
- the rear v iew camera does not provide a reliab le
image, fo r example, in poor visib ility co ndi tions
or if the le ns is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not v isible d ue to
sun glare and reflect io n.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position or
too close to the airbag can be seriously in­
jured by an airbag as it unfolds. To help re­
duce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your breastbone
and the steering wheel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the out­
side of the steering wheel rim with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to help reduce the r isk of personal in­
jury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Holding
the steering wheel the wrong way can cause
serious injuries to the hands, arms and head
if the driver's airbag deploys.
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supplemen­
tal driver's airbag to protect you in a colli­ sion.
- Always sit in an upright position and never lean against or place any part of your body
too close to the area where the airbags are located .
- Before driving, always adjust the front seats
and head restraints properly and make sure
that all passengers are properly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle is
moving . Your seat may move unexpectedly
and you could lose control of the vehicle .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests are
tilted back, the greater the risk of injury due
to incorrect positioning of the safety belt
and improper seating position.
- Children must a lways ride in child safety
seats¢

Driving safety
Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position is
important for safe, relaxed driving.
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of in­
jury in the event of an acc ident, we recommend
that you adjust the seat for the front passenger
to the following position:
" Move the front passenger seat back as far as
possible . There must be a minimum of 10 in­
ches (25 cm) between the breastbone and the
instrument panel¢.&, .
"Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is in
an upright position and your back comes in full
contact with it whenever the vehicle is moving.
" Applies to vehicles with adjustable head re­
straints : Adjust the head restraint so the upper
edge is as even as possible with the top of your
head . If that is not possible, try to adjust the
head restraint so that it is as close to this posi­
tion as possible .
" Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of the
front passenger seat.
" Fasten and wear safety belts correctly

Pedal area
Pedals
The pedals must always be free to move and
must never be interfered with by a floor mat or
any other object.
Make sure that all pedals move freely without in­
terference and that noth ing prevents them from
retu rni ng to the ir origi nal positions.
Only use floor mats that leave the pedal area free
and can be secured with floor mat fasteners.
If a brake circuit fails, increased brake pedal trav­
el is required to br ing the veh icle to a full stop.
_&. WARNING
Peda ls that cannot move free ly can cause loss
of vehicle control and increase the risk of seri­
ous inj ury.
- Never place any objects in the driver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal area
and interfere w ith pedal function . In case of
s u dden brak ing o r an accident, you would
not be ab le to bra ke or accelerate!
- Always make sure that nothing can fa ll or
move into the dr ive r's footwell.
Floor mats on the driver side
Always use floor mats that can be securely at­
tached to the floor mat fasteners and do not in­
terfere with the fre e movement of the pedals .
... Make sure that the floor mats are properly se­
cured and cannot move and interfere with the
peda ls ~ .&_ .
Use on ly floor mats that leave the pedal area un­
obstructed and that are firmly secured so that
they cannot slip o ut of pos ition . Yo u ca n obtain
suitable floo r mats from you r authorized Aud i
dea le r.
F loor mat fasteners are insta lled in your Audi.

Floor mats used in your vehicle must be attached
to these fasteners. Properly securing the floor
mats will prevent them from slid ing into posi ­
tions that could interfere with the pedals or im­
pair safe operat ion of your vehicle in other ways.

Pedals that ca nnot move freely can res ult in a

-Always make sure that floo r mats a re prop­
erly secured.
- Never p lace or install floor mats o r other
floor coverings in the vehicle that cannot be

- Never p lace or ins tall floor mats o r other
floor coverings on top of a lready installed
floor m ats. Addi tional floor ma ts and o ther
cover ings will reduce the size o f th e pedal
area and interfere with the pedals.
- Always proper ly re insta ll and se cure floo r
mats tha t have been taken ou t for cleaning.
- Alway s make sure th at o bje cts canno t fall
into the driver foo twell whi le the vehicle is
mov ing. Objects can become trapped under
the brake pedal a nd accelerator pedal caus­
ing a loss o f vehicle control.
Storing cargo correctly

All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart­
ment .

Belt tensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a
particular sev erity, saf ety belts are tensioned au­
tomatically .
The safety belts are eq uipped w ith safety belt
pretensioners. The system is activa ted by sensors
in front, side and rear -end collisions of great se­
verity. This tightens the be lt and takes up belt
s lack

Taking up the slack
helps to reduce forward occupant movement dur­
i ng a collis ion .
@ Note
Never let the belt remain over a rear seatback
that has been folded forward.
@ Tips
The sa fety belt pretensioner can only be acti­
vated once .
- The safety belt pretensioners do not deploy
in minor frontal, side and rear -end coll i­
sions.
- When the safety belt pretensioners are acti­
vated, a f ine dust is released. This is normal
and is not caused by a fire in the veh icle.
- The relevant safety requirements must be
observed when the vehicle or components
of the system are scrapped. An authorized
Audi dealer or qua lified workshop is familiar
w ith these regu lations and will be pleased
to pass on the information to you. .,._

Airbag syste m
restraints or occupants on the front passen­
ger seat and prevent the side airbag in the
seat backrest from deploying properly.
- Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger seat.
The additional padding will prevent the
weight-sens ing mat in the seat from accu­
rately reg istering the ch ild restraint or per­
son on the seat and prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from funct ioning prope rly.
- If you must use a child restraint on the front
passenge r seat and the child restraint man­
ufact urer's instructions require the use of a
towel, foam cushion or something else to properly position the chi ld restraint, make
certain that the
PASSENGER A IR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on whenever the
child restraint is installed on the front pas­
senger seat.
- If the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG O FF light does
not come on and stay on, immediately in­
stall child restraint in a rear seating position and have the airbag system inspected by
you r authorized Aud i deale r.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the side
ai rbags supplement the protection offered by the
front three-point safety belts with pretensioners and load limiters and the adjustable head re ­
stra ints to help reduce the r isk of injury in a wide
range of accident and crash situations. Be sure to
read the important information about safety and heed the WARNINGS in th is chapter .
Deployment of the Advanced Airbag System and
the activation of the safety belt pretensioners de­
pend on the deceleration measured by the crash
sensors and registered by the electronic control
unit . Crash severity depends on speed and decel­
eration as we ll as the mass and stiffness of the
vehicle or object involved in the crash.
On the passenger s ide, regardless of safety belt
use, the a irbag will be t urned off if the weight on
the passenge r seat is less than the amount p ro­
g rammed in the e lectron ic cont rol unit . T he front

airbag on the passenger side will also be turned
off if one of the child safety seats that has been
certified under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 has been recogn ized on the seat.

To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
f lates, always wear safety belts properly.
- I f you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sit­
ting sideways or ou t of position in any way,

could even be killed if yo u are up against the
airbag or too close to i t when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag

Safety be lts are important to help keep front
seat occupants in the proper seated position so
that airbags can unfo ld properly and prov ide sup­
plemental protection in a fronta l co llision.
The front airbags a re designed to provide addi­
tional protection for the chest and face of the driver and the front seat passenger when:
- safety belts are worn properly,
- t he seats have been positioned so that the oc-
cupant is properly seated as far as possib le
from the airbag,

Child safety
Deactivating the convertible locking
retractor
The convertible locking retractor for child re­
straints will be deactivated automatically when the belt is wound all the way back into the re­
tractor .
.. Press the red button on the safety belt buckle.
The belt tongue will pop out of the buckle .
.. Guide the safety belt all the way back into its
stowed position.
Always let the safety belt retract completely into
its stowed position . The safety belt can now be
used as an ordinary safety belt without the con­
vertible locking retractor for child restraints.
If the convertible locking retractor should be ac­
tivated inadvertently, the safety belt must be un­
fastened and guided completely back into its
stowed position to deactivate this feature. If the
convertible locking retractor is not deactivated,
the safety belt will gradually become tighter and
uncomfortable to wear.
A WARNING
-
Improperly installed child safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a collision.
- Never unfasten the safety belt to deactivate the convertible locking retractor for child re­
straints while the vehicle is moving. You
would not be restrained and could be seri­
ously injured in an accident.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever using a child restrained in a vehicle is
being used~

Fa ults in the brake system
If yo u should notice a sudden increase i n brake

Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the wheel. If necessary,
the wheel may be removed for this inspection

A WARNING
- New bra ke pads don't have the best stop­
ping power and must be "bro ken- in" dur ing
the init ia l 250 m iles (400 kilometers). Yo u
can compensate for th is by press ing the
brake pedal more firmly. This a lso applies
later when new pads are installed.
- Yo u should perfo rm braking maneuvers for
the p urpose of clean ing the brake system
only if road conditions permit. Other road
users must not be put at risk -you may
cause an accident!
- Before descending a steep grade, reduce
speed and shift t ransm iss ion into a lower
gear or lowe r driving range. Do not ride the
brakes or hold the pedal down too long or
too often. This could ca use the brakes to get
hot and diminish brak ing efficie ncy.
- Do not "r ide t he b rakes" by resting your foot
on the pe dal when yo u do not inten d to
bra ke. This may cause the bra kes to over­
heat, premat ure wear and increased stop ­
ping distance.
- Under certa in climatic and operating condi­
tio ns such as passing thro ugh water, driving
in heavy rain or after washing the vehicle,

the effectiveness o f the brakes can be re­
duced. In winter, ice can accum ulate on the
brake pads, lin ings, d iscs and drums . Care­
fu lly apply brakes for a test . Brakes will dry
and ice coat ings will be cleaned off after a
few ca refu l brake applications .
- Driving for an extended period of t ime on
salt-covered roads without usi ng your
b rakes can also affect braking eff iciency.
Clea n off acc umul ated salt coat ing from
b rake discs an d pa ds w ith a few careful
b rake appli cat ions .
- I f you d amage the front spoile r, or if you in­
s t all a different spoiler, be s ure the a ir flow
to the front brakes is not obstruc ted. Other­
wise the brake system could overheat reduc­ ing the effectiveness of t he ent ire bra ke sys­
tem.
- Fai lure of one brake circuit w ill impa ir the
braking capability resulting in an increased
stopping distance . Avoid driving the vehicle
and have it towed to the nearest authorized
Aud i dealer or qualified workshop.
- Never let the vehicle roll to a stop with the
engine shut off.
- If the brake booster is not working, the
brake pedal must be pressed cons iderab ly
ha rder to make up fo r the lack of booste r
assis tance .
Electro-mechanical
power assist, dynamic
steering
The electro-mechanical power assist helps the
driver when steering.
Power steer ing adapts electronically based on
the vehicle speed.
Indicator lights and messages
• Steering defe ctive! Do not drive vehicle!
If this indicato r light turns on and stays on and
t hi s message appears, the powe r steering may
have failed.

switch the engine

- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your veh icle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid driving through salt water because it
can cause corrosion.
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission control
system (catalytic converter) is functioning prop­ erly to ensure that your vehicle is running in an
environmentally sound manner .

~ Never run the tank down a ll the way to empty .
~ Never put too much motor oil in your engine

~ Never try to push- or tow-start you r vehicle.
The cata lytic converter is an efficient "clean-up"
dev ice bu ilt into the exha ust system of the vehi­
cle. The cata lytic conve rter burns many of the
pollutants in the exhaust gas before they are re ­
leased into the atmosphere.
The exclusive use of unleaded fue l is critica lly im­
portant for the l ife of the catalytic conve rter and
p roper functioning of the engine.
A WARNING ,..____ -
- The temperature of the exhaust system is
high, both when driving and after stopping
the engine.
- Never touch the exha ust tail pipes once they
have become hot. This could result in burns.
- Do not park or ope rate t he vehicle in areas
where the hot exha ust system may come in
contact with dry grass, br ush, fue l spill or
other mater ial which can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust mani-

fold, exha ust pipes, cata lytic conve rter or
heat shields. D uring driving, the substance
used for undercoat ing could overheat and
cause a f ire.
Cl) Note
- Be aware that just one tank f illing wit h
leaded fu e l w ill already seriously degrade
the performance of the catalytic converter.
- Do not exceed the correct engine oil leve l
¢page 197.
-Do not drive until the fue l tank becomes
completely empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unbu rned fue l cou ld also get into the
exhaust system and this could cause the
catalytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ign ition while the vehicle
is moving .
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un­
der these conditions, as otherw ise fuel can
reac h the catalytic converter. T his could re­
sult in overheat ing of the converter, requir­
ing its replacement.
- T o ass ure eff icient operat ion of the Emis­
sion Contro l System:
- Have you r vehicle maintained properly and
i n accordance wit h the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty
& Ma intenance
booklet.
- Lack of proper ma intenance as well as im­
p roper use of the veh icle will impa ir the
function of the emission control system
and could lead to damage.
(® For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emiss ion Control System is op­
erating properly, t he exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op­
erating states. Th is depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Us ing a d iffer­
ent brand of fuel may help, or fi lli ng the tank
wi th lead-free super g rade gasoline.
Shutting down vehicle
