Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, color- less, and odorless gas. It is present in allexhaust gases. If you ever smell exhaustfumes inside the vehicle, make sure thepassenger compartment is ventilated, andimmediately return the vehicle to a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician forcorrection.

Refueling – opening/closing fuel filler door
The fuel filler door is located on the right rear fender (indicated by an arrow beside the fuel tank symbol on the information display

With the ignition switched off, press and release the button on the lighting panel tounlock the fuel filler door. Please note that thefuel filler door will remain unlocked until thevehicle begins to move forward. An audibleclick will be heard when the fuel filler doorrelocks. •If you intend to leave your vehicle while it is being refueled, this feature enables youto lock the doors/trunk while leaving thefuel filler door unlocked.
• You can also keep the vehicle locked ifyou remain inside it during refueling. Thecentral locking button does not lock thefuel filler door. •
Be sure the fuel filler door is not obstruc-ted and is completely closed after refuel-ing.
• Open the fuel filler cap slowly during hotweather.
Close the fuel filler door by pressing it; a click indicates that it is closed.
CAUTION
Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damage to the environ-ment, gasolines containing alcohol cancause damage to painted surfaces, whichmay not be covered under the New VehicleLimited Warranty.
Manually opening the fuel filler door
1. Open the side hatch in the trunk (on the same side as the fuel filler door).
2. Grasp the handle on the green cord.

Using the transmission's Sport mode 14
may increase fuel consumption some- what. Use the transmission's Drive ( D)
position as often as possible. For addi-tional information about Sport mode, seeTransmission – Geartronic (p. 252).
• Using the engine's optional Eco func- tion15
can help improve fuel economy. For
additional information, see ECO* (p. 260).
• Do not exceed posted speed limits.
• Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load) in the vehicle.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when tires are cold).
• Remove snow tires when threat of snowor ice has ended.
• Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc,increase air resistance and also fuel con-sumption.
• At highway driving speeds, fuel consump-tion will be lower with the air conditioningon and the windows closed than with theair conditioning off and the windowsopen.
• Using the onboard trip computer's fuelconsumption modes can help you learnhow to drive more economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are: •
Dirty air cleaner
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
• Dragging brakes
• Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and oth-ers are checked at the standard maintenanceintervals.
WARNING
Driving with the trunk open: Driving with
the trunk open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases entering the passengercompartment. If the trunk must be keptopen for any reason, proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to air flow to floor, windshield and side win-dows and the blower control to itshighest setting.
Handling and roadholdingAt the specified curb weight your vehicle has a tendency to understeer, which means thatthe steering wheel has to be turned morethan might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stabilityand reduces the risk of rear wheel skid.Remember that these properties can alterwith the vehicle load. The heavier the load in the trunk, the less the tendency to under-steer. •
Vehicle load, tire design and inflation pressure all affect vehicle handling.Therefore, check that the tires are inflatedto the recommended pressure accordingto the vehicle load. Loads should be dis-tributed so that capacity weight or maxi-mum permissible axle loads are notexceeded.
• At the specified curb weight your vehiclehas a tendency to understeer, whichmeans that the steering wheel has to beturned more than might seem appropriatefor the curvature of a bend. This ensuresgood stability and reduces the risk of rearwheel skid. Remember that these proper-ties can alter with the vehicle load. Theheavier the load in the trunk, the less thetendency to understeer.

When used, the towing eyelet should always be securing attached.

Removing the front/rear covers
Attaching the towing eyeletThe towing eyelet is located under the floor of the trunk. This eyelet must bescrewed into the positions provided onthe right sides of either the front or rearbumper (see illustration).
There are two different types of covers over the openings for the towing eyeletand they have to be opened differently.
• If the cover has a notch, insert a coin, etc., into the notch and pry open theedge of the cover. Open the covercompletely and remove it.
• If the cover has a mark along one edgeor in a corner, press the mark whileprying out the opposite side/cornerusing a coin, etc. Open the cover andremove it.
Screw the towing eyelet in place, first by hand and then using the tire iron until it issecurely in place. After the vehicle has been towed, the eyelet should be removed and returned to its stor-age location. Press the cover for the attachment point back into position.

Incorrectly mounted tires impair the car's braking properties and ability to force asiderain, snow and slush.

• The tires with the most tread should always be on the rear axle (to help reducethe risk of skidding).
• When switching between summer andwinter tires, mark the tires to indicatewhere they were mounted on the car,e.g., LF = left front, RR = right rear
• Tires with tread designed to roll in onlyone direction are marked with an arrowon the sidewall.
• Contact a Volvo workshop if you areunsure about the tread depth.

Changing a wheel – removing wheel

Changing a wheel – spare wheel
Wheel changes should always be carried out correctly.
Spare tireA spare tire can be purchased for your vehi-cle as an accessory. Follow the instructionsincluded with the spare tire regarding use andstowing in the vehicle. See also Changing awheel – removing wheel (p. 288) for additionalinformation.
Spare wheelThe following instructions only apply if youhave purchased a temporary spare wheel* foryour vehicle. If there is no temporary spare wheel in your vehicle, please see Tire sealing system* –general information (p. 311) for instructionson using the tire sealing system. The accessory temporary spare wheel is pro- vided in a bag that must be securely strappedin place in the trunk while the vehicle is beingdriven. The spare wheel is only intended for tempo- rary use. Replace it with a normal wheel assoon as possible. The vehicle's handling maybe altered by the use of the spare wheel. Thecorrect tire pressure is stated in the tire pres-sure table, see Tire inflation – pressure table(p. 297) and in the tire inflation placard on thedriver's side door jamb at the rear of the driv-er's door opening.Turn the handle on the spare wheel bag in toward the rear seat. Secure the stitchedstrap hooks in the loading eyelets. Secure the long strap in one of the loading eyelets, wrapthe strap around the spare wheel and throughthe lower handle. Secure the short strap onthe long strap. Secure in the other loadingeyelet and tighten.
WARNING
Current legislation prohibits the use of the “Temporary Spare” tire other than as atemporary replacement for a puncturedtire. It must be replaced as soon as possi-ble by a standard tire. Road holding andhandling may be affected with the “Tem-porary Spare” in use.
CAUTION
The vehicle must never be driven with more than one temporary spare wheel.

Changing a wheel – accessing the spare wheel
The following procedure explains how to access the spare wheel (where applicable).
1. Release the bag's retaining straps.
2. Lift the bag out of the vehicle and remove
the spare wheel from the bag.
3. Fold up the floor hatch in the trunk.
4. Remove the jack* and tools* from the foam block and change the wheels (see the instructions in the following section"Changing a wheel").
5. After changing wheels, return the jack and tools to the foam block and close thefloor hatch.
6. If possible, place the wheel with the punctured tire in the bag. 7. If there is a wheel in the bag, strap the
bag securely in place in the trunk.WARNING
•If there is a wheel in the bag, the bag must be securely restrained using itsstraps and the load anchoring eyelets inthe trunk. See (p. 291) and carefully fol-low the instructions.
• If the wheel with the punctured tire istoo big to fit in the bag, it should besecurely restrained in the trunk usingsuitable straps, a net for anchoringcargo, etc.
Changing a wheel – installing a wheel
It is important to re-install wheels properly.
Re-installing the wheel1. Clean the contact surfaces on the wheel
and hub.
2. Lift the wheel and place it on the hub.
Tighten the wheel nuts
3. Install the wheel nuts and tighten hand- tight. Using the lug wrench, tighten cross- wise until all nuts are snug.
4. Lower the vehicle to the ground and alter- nately tighten the bolts crosswise to103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
5. Press the plastic covers onto the wheel nuts and Install the wheel cover (whereapplicable). The opening in the wheelcover for the tire's inflation valve must bepositioned over the valve.

Tire sealing system* – general information
The vehicle is equipped with a tire sealing system that enables you to temporarily seal ahole in the tread surface and re-inflate a flattire, or to adjust a tire’s inflation pressure.
IntroductionThe tire sealing system consists of an air compressor, a container for the sealing com-pound, wiring to connect the system to thevehicle’s electrical system via one of the 12-volt sockets, and a hose used to connect thesystem to the tire’s inflation valve.
NOTE
The tire sealing system's compressor has been tested and approved by Volvo.
The 12-volt sockets are located in the front tunnel console and on the rear side of thecenter console in the rear seat.
Accessing the tire sealing systemThe tire sealing system is stowed under thefloor of the trunk. To access it:
1. Lift the floor hatch in the cargo area.
2. Lift out the tire sealing system.
NOTE
• The tire sealing system is only intended to seal holes on the tire’stread area, not the sidewall.
• Tires with large holes or tears cannotbe repaired with the tire sealing sys-tem.
• After use, stow the tire sealing systemproperly to help prevent rattling.
WARNING
• After using the tire sealing system, the vehicle should not be driven fartherthan approximately 120 miles (200km).
• Have the tire inspected by a trainedand qualified Volvo service technicianas soon as possible to determine if itcan be permanently repaired or mustbe replaced.
• The vehicle should not be driven fasterthan 50 mph (80 km/h) while using atire that has been temporarily repairedwith the tire sealing system.
• After using the tire sealing system,drive carefully and avoid abrupt steer-ing maneuvers and sudden stops.

counterclockwise.
3. Remove the defective bulb by pressing it in slightly and turning it counterclockwise before pulling it out.
4. Insert a new bulb, press it in and turn it clockwise.
5. Reinsert the bulb holder by turning it clockwise.
