nOperation signal (with a wirel ess remote control function)
A buzzer sounds to indicate that the trunk has been opened.
n Trunk light
The trunk light turns on when the trunk is opened.
n Function to prevent the tr unk being locked with the electronic key inside
(vehicles with a smart key system)
l When all doors are being locked, closing the trunk lid with the electronic key
left inside the trunk will sound an alarm.
In this case, the trunk lid can be opened by pressing the trunk release but-
ton on the trunk lid.
l Even when the spare electronic key is put in the trunk with all the doors
locked, the key confinement prevention function can be activated so the
trunk can be opened. In order to prevent theft, take all electronic keys with
you when leaving the vehicle.
l Even when the electronic key is put in the trunk with all the doors are locked,
the key may not be detected depending on the places and the surrounding
radio wave conditions. In this case, the key confinement prevention function
cannot be activated, causing the doors to lock when the trunk is closed.
Make sure to check where the key is before closing the trunk.
l The key confinement prevention function cannot be activated if any one of
the doors is unlocked. In this case, open the trunk using the trunk opener.
n Internal trunk release lever
n Customization
The trunk unlocking operation can be changed.
(Customizable features: P. 576)
The trunk lid can be opened by pushing
the glow-in-the-dark lever located on the
inside of the trunk lid to the side.
The lever will continue to glow for some
time after the trunk lid is closed.

CAUTION
nUsing the trunk
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resulting in seri-
ous injury.
lRemove any heavy loads, such as snow and ice, from the trunk lid before
opening it. Failure to do so may cause the trunk lid to suddenly shut again
after it is opened.
l When opening or closing the trunk lid, thoroughly check to make sure the
surrounding area is safe.
l If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let them know that
the trunk is about to open or close.
l Use caution when opening or closing the trunk lid in windy weather as it
may move abruptly in strong wind.
l Do not attach any accessories other than genuine Toyota parts to the trunk
lid. Such additional weight on the trunk lid may cause the lid to suddenly
shut again after it is opened.
lThe trunk lid may suddenly shut if it is
not opened fully. It is more difficult to
open or close the trunk lid on an incline
than on a level surface, so beware of
the trunk lid unexpectedly opening or
closing by itself. Make sure that the
trunk lid is fully open and secure before
using the trunk.
l When closing the trunk lid, take extra
care to prevent your fingers etc. from
being caught.
l When closing the trunk lid, make sure to
press it lightly on its outer surface. If the
trunk handle is used to fully close the
trunk lid, it may result in hands or arms
being caught.

Effective range (areas within whic h the electronic key is detected)
n Alarms and warning indicators
Vehicles with a drive monitor display
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning lights are
used to prevent theft of the vehicle and unforeseeable accidents resulting
from erroneous operation. Take appropria te measures for the warning light
that comes on. ( P. 503)
Vehicles with a multi-information display
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning messages
shown on the multi-information display are used to prevent theft of the vehicle
and accidents resulting from erroneous operation. Take appropriate mea-
sures in response to any warning message on the multi-information display.
( P. 510)
The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures when
only alarms are sounded.
When locking or unlocking the
doors
The system can be operated
when the electronic key is within
about 2.3 ft. (0.7 m) of either of
the outside front door handles.
(Only the doors detecting the key
can be operated.)
When starting the engine or changing engine switch modes
The system can be operated when the electronic key is inside the
vehicle.
When opening the trunk
The system can be operated when the electronic key is within
about 2.3 ft. (0.7 m) of the trunk release button.

Operation of each component
COROLLA_TMMMS_TMMC_U (OM12J84U)l
Vehicles with a multi-information display: If the electronic key is inside the
vehicle and a door handle becomes wet during a car wash, a message may
be shown on the multi-information display and a buzzer will sound outside
the vehicle. To turn off the alarm, lock all the doors.
l The lock sensor may not work properly if it comes into contact with ice,
snow, mud, etc. Clean the lock sensor and attempt to operate it again.
l If there is another electronic key in the detection area, it may take slightly
longer to unlock the doors after the door handle is gripped.
l Fingernails may scrape against the door during operation of the door han-
dle. Be careful not to injure fingernails or damage the surface of the door.
l A sudden handle operation or a handle operation immediately after entering
the effective range may prevent the doors from being unlocked. Touch the
door unlock sensor and check that the doors are unlocked before pulling the
door handle again.
l Unlocking the vehicle may take more time if another electronic key is within
the effective range.
n When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
lTo prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 6 ft. (2
m) of the vehicle.
l The smart key system can be deactivated in advance. ( P. 576)
n To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get
the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the
outside of the vehicle.
Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key
may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The
alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention function may not
operate.)
n If the smart key system do es not operate properly
l Locking and unlocking the doors: Use the mechanical key. ( P. 535)
l Starting the engine: P. 536
n Customization

CAUTION
nWhen folding the rear seatbacks down
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
lDo not fold the seatbacks down while driving.
l Stop the vehicle on level ground, set the parking brake and shift the shift
lever to P (automatic transmission or continuously variable transmission)
or N (manual transmission).
l Do not allow anyone to sit on a folded seatback or in the trunk while driv-
ing.
l Do not allow children to enter the trunk.
l Do not allow anyone to sit on the rear center seat if the rear right seat is
folded down, as the seat belt buckle for the rear center seat belt is th\
en
concealed under the folded seat and cannot be used.
l Be careful not to catch your hand when folding the rear seatbacks.
l Adjust the position of the front seat before folding down the rear seatbacks
so that the front seat does not interfere with the rear seatbacks when fold-
ing down the rear seatbacks.
n After returning the seatback to the upright position
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
lCheck that the seat belts are not twisted or caught under the seat.
NOTICE
nWhen the rear right seatback is folded down
Make sure the luggage loaded in the enlarged trunk will not damage the
webbing of the rear center seat belt.
l Make sure that the seatback is securely
locked in position by lightly rocking it
back and forth.
If the seatback is not securely locked,
the red marking will be visible on the
seatback lock release knob. Make sure
that the red marking is not visible.
