CAUTIONlBefore selecting a gear with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle stationary, fully depressthe brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from
creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when the en-
gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the air conditioning operating, the brakes should
only be released when you are ready to drive
away.
l Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
l Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.
l To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
l Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions. Never coast downhill backward with the se- lector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or sportsmode position or coast forward with the se-
lector lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position. The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steering
wheel weight could lead to an accident.CAUTIONl Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the A/T.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “P” (PARK), “N”
(NEUTRAL) or “D” (DRIVE) position, the
increase in engine revolutions may be limi-

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE)
position, push the accelerator to the floor.The automatic transmission will automatical- ly downshift.
NOTEl In “Sports mode”, downshifts do not take
place when the accelerator is depressed all

DRIVING UPHILL
The transmission prevents unnecessary up-
shifts even when the accelerator pedal is re- leased and ensures smooth driving.
DRIVING DOWNHILL
According to the conditions, the transmission
will automatically shift to a lower gear ratio to achieve stronger engine braking. This mayhelp reduce your need to use the service brake.

For short waiting periods, such as at trafficsignals, the vehicle can be left in gear and held stationary with the service brake.
For longer waiting periods with the engine
running, place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking
brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.
CAUTIONl Never hold the vehicle stationary on a hill
using the accelerator pedal (without using
the brake pedal). Always apply the parking brake and/or service brakes.Parking

To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,and then move the selector lever to the “P”
(PARK) position.

If you are going to leave the vehicle unatten-
ded, always switch off the engine and remove the ignition key.NOTEl On a slope, be sure to apply the parking
brake before moving the selector lever to the
“P” (PARK) position. If you move the selec- tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be diffi-
cult to disengage the selector lever from the
“P” (PARK) position when next you drive the vehicle, requiring application of a strong
force to the selector lever to move from the

If the transmission does not change speeds
while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphillslope, it may be that there is something un-
usual happening in the transmission, causing a safety device to activate. We recommendyou to have your vehicle checked as soon as
possible. 1. If your vehicle has difficulty moving up-
hill, shift the selector lever into 2nd
gear
of the “Sports mode”.
This method might not work depending
on the transmission malfunction.
2. Once the vehicle is moving on a level
road, move the selector lever back to

Shifting to rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive
can be made by operating the transfer shift lever (A). Shift the transfer shift lever to an appropriate position according to the roadsurface conditions. In addition, the
2WD/4WD operation indication lamp indi- cates the transfer shift lever shifting state.Refer to “2WD/4WD operation indicationlamp” on page 6-28.

•Check the brake system and, if neces-
sary, have it serviced.
• Check the engine, transmission, trans-
fer, and differential oil or grease level and turbidity. If the oil or grease is
milky, it indicates water contamina-
tion. Replace it with new oil or grease.
• Grease the propeller shaft.
• Check the inside of the vehicle. If in-
gress of water is found, dry the carpet
etc.
• Inspect the headlamps. If the head-
lamp bulb is flooded with water, we
recommend you to have it drained.Cautions on handling of 4-

Tyres and wheels
Since the driving torque can be applied to the
4 wheels, the performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly af- fected by the condition of the tyres.

Pay close attention to the tyres.
l Install specified tyres on all wheels. Re-
fer to “Tyres and wheels” on page
11-11.
l Be sure to fit all 4 tyres and wheels of
the same size and type.
When replacement of any of the tyres or
wheels is necessary, replace all of them.
l All tyres should be rotated whenever the
wear difference between the front and
rear tyres is recognizable.

Good vehicle performance cannot be expec- ted if there is a difference in wear between
tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 10-15.
l Check the tyre inflation pressure regular-
ly.
l If the tyre inflation pressure is inappro-
priate, the transfer gear may make some
noise and shock while changing the drive mode.CAUTIONl Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres which differ in
size, type, brand or the degree of wear will
cause excessive loading, resulting in possi- ble damage to the drive system.Towing
If towing is necessary, we recommend you to
have it done by your MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point or a
commercial tow truck service.
In the following cases, transport the vehicle
using a tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside re-
veals that oil or some other fluid is leak- ing.
Only when you cannot receive a towing serv- ice from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or commercial tow truck
service, tow your vehicle carefully in accord- ance with the instructions given in “Towing”

varied depending on the tyre size, optional equipment and suspension conditions.
Operating hints
l Do not let the clutch slip (vehicles with
M/T only) and do not increase the en-
gine speed more than necessary when starting.
l Be sure that the driving speed does not
exceed 100 km/h (62 mph)* for trailer
operation. *: For vehicles with only front seats orvehicles with only front seats and sec-
ond seats (5-door models), 80 km/h
(50 mph) should be applied instead of 100 km/h (62 mph).
It is also recommended that you obey the
local regulations in case driving speed
with a trailer is limited to less than
100 km/h (62 mph).
l To prevent shocks from the overrun
brake, depress the brake pedal lightly at first and then more strongly.
l To make full use of engine braking,
change to a lower gear before descend-
ing a slope.
Additional precautions for vehi-
cles equipped with A/T
The 2nd
gear (in sports mode) is recommen-
ded on slopes or at low speed. Use the
1 st
gear (in sports mode) in mountainous
areas in order to make better use of engine braking and to assist the brake system. How-
ever, be sure that the speed does not exceed the maximum speed limit for the selected
gear.

slope, the brakes may overheat reducing the effectiveness. In this situation, have your ve-hicle transported by a tow truck.
l When the vehicle with
A/T is to be towed by
another vehicle with all the wheels on the
ground, make sure that the towing speed and
distance given below are never exceeded, avoiding damage to the transmission.

Petrol-powered vehicles
Towing speed: 50 km/h (31 mph)
Towing distance: 50 km (31 miles)

Diesel-powered vehicles
Towing speed: 30 km/h (19 mph)
Towing distance: 80 km (50 miles)

For the towing speed and the towing dis- tance, follow the local driving laws and reg-
ulations.If your vehicle tows another ve-
hicle
Only use the rear towing hook as shown in
the illustration. Secure the tow rope to the rear towing hook.
CAUTIONl When you are going to tow another vehicle,
move the transfer shift lever to “4H” posi-
tion.
Selecting “2H” drive may increase the dif- ferential oil temperature, resulting in possi-
ble damage to the driving system.
Further, the drive train will be subjected to
excessive loading possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious faults.NOTEl Do not tow a vehicle heavier than your own

in sand, mud or snow
If the vehicle becomes stuck in snow, sand,
or mud, it can often be moved with a rocking
motion. Move the selector lever alternately
between the Sports mode and “R” (RE-
VERSE) position (with M/T, between 1 st

Reverse), while applying slight pressure to the accelerator pedal.
