designed

accept
only
a

ed gasolin

nozzle. In
the
United
States,
fuel
suppliers
are
required
by
law
to add
deter
gents
to their
gas-
oline
to
minimize
fuel-injector
fouling
and
minimize
intake-valve
deposits.

gent
gasoline
helps
keep
your
engine
in
tune
and
your
emission-control
system
working
prop-
erly
.
Your
vehicle
is
designed
to
operate
on
unleaded
gasoline
having
a minimum
octane
number of 87 [(MON+RON)/2], or 91 RON.MON: Motor Octane NumberRON: Research Octane Number Gasoline
sold
at
some
service
stations
con-
tains
oxygenates
such
as
ethanol,
although
the
oxygenates
may
not
be
identified
by
those
names.
Oxygenates
are
required
in
some
areas
of the
country
. Such
fuel
can
be
used
in
your vehicle.A mixture
of
up
to 10
%
ethanol
(grain
alco-
hol)
and
90% unlead
ed gasolin
e may
be used
in
your
vehicle,
provided
the
octane
number
is at
least
as
high
as
that
recommended
for
unleaded gasoline. Do
not
operate
your
vehicle
on
gasoline
con-
taining
methanol
(wood
alcohol).
Using
this
type
of
alcohol
could
adversely
affect
the
vehicle
’s performance
and
damage
critical
parts
of the
vehicle’
s fuel
system.
Many
areas
of
the
country
require
the
use
of
cleaner
burning
fuel
referred
to as “Reformu-
lated Gasoline”. Reformulated
gasoline
contains
oxygenates
and
is
specially
blended
to
reduce
vehicle
emissions and improve air quality
.

Accordingly, when the low tire pressure tell- tale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a sig-nificantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehi- cle’s handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute forproper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’sresponsibility to maintain correct tire pres- sure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMSlow tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale.When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one min- ute and then remain continuously illuminated.This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists.When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the
vehicle that prevent the TPMS from function- ing properly. Always check the TPMS mal- function telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure thatthe replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function prop- erly.

1. If the tire pressure monitoring systemwarning light illuminates, avoid hardbraking, sharp steering maneuvers and high speeds. You should stop and adjust the tires to the proper inflation pressure assoon as possible. Adjust the spare tire at the same time. Refer to “Tires” on page 9-14.
2. If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light remains illuminated afteryou have been driving for about 20 min- utes after you adjust the tire inflation pres- sure, one or more of the tires may have apuncture. Inspect the tire and if it has a puncture, have it repaired by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon aspossible.
If the warning light/display illu- minates while driving
NOTE
In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor-mation display. When inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, do not apply excessive force to the valve stem to avoid breakage.
After inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, always reinstall the valve cap on the valve stem. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture could get into the valve, resulting in damage to thetire inflation pressure sensor. Do not use metal valve caps, which may cause a metal reaction, resulting in corrosion and damage of the tire inflation pressure sen- sors. Once adjustments have been made, the warn- ing light will go off after a few minutes ofdriving.WA R N I N G If the warning light/display illuminates while you are driving, avoid hard braking, sharp steering maneuvers and highspeeds. Driving with an under-inflated tire adversely affects vehicle performance and can result in an accident.NOTE

4. Make sure that the flange portion at the jacking point fits in the groove at the topof the jack. Insert the bar (D) into the wheel nut wrench (E). Then put the end of the bar into the shaft’s jack end, as shownin the illustration. Slowly rotate the wheel nut wrench until the tire is raised slightly off the groundsurface.
5. Remove the wheel nuts with the wheel nut wrench, then take the wheel off.
6. Clean out any mud, etc. on the hub sur- face (F), hub bolts (G) or in the installa- tion holes (H) in the wheel, and then mount the spare tire.
WA R N I N G Stop jacking up the vehicle as soon as the tire is raised off the ground. It is danger- ous to raise the vehicle any higher. Never get under the vehicle or put any portion of your body under the vehicle while it is support
ed by the jack.
Do not bump the raised vehicle or leave it sitting on the jack for a long time. Both are very dangerous. Do not use a jack except the one that came with your vehicle. The jack should not be used for any pur- pose other than to change a tire. No one should be in your vehicle when using the jack. Do not start or run the engine while your vehicle is on the jack. Do not turn the raised wheel. The tires that are still on the ground could turn andmake your vehicle fall off the jack. CAUTION Handle the wheel carefully when changing the tire, to avoid scratching the wheel sur- face.
WA R N I N G Mount the spare wheel with the valve stem (I) facing outboard. If you cannot see the valve stem (I), you have installed the wheel backwards.Operating the vehicle with the spare wheel installed backwards can cause vehicle damage and result in an accident.

1. Align the tire air valve (C) and the wheel cover notch (D).
2. Push the bottom (F) of the wheel cover into the wheel. 3. Gently push in both sides (G) of the wheel cover and hold them in place with bothknees. 4. Gently tap the top (H) of the wheel cover. Ensure the wheel cover is securelyinstalled around its entire outer circumfer- ence.

NOTE
The wheel cover is made of plastic. Be care- ful when prying it off. CAUTION Trying to remove the wheel cover with only your bare hands can seriously injure your fingers.

CAUTION Before installing the wheel cover to the wheel, make sure that the tabs (A) on the back of the wheel cover correctly engage the ring (B) to prevent the wheel cover fromcoming off. Do not install a wheel cover that has broken tabs.
NOTE
Full wheel covers have a symbol mark (E) provided on the reverse side to show the air valve location.Before installing the wheel cover to the wheel, make sure that the opening with the symbol mark is correctly aligned with the airvalve.

ne to use oil. You may
need to add oil between the recommended oilchange intervals. Before starting the engine, check the engine oil level. Refill if necessary. To check the oil level, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and gently insert it all the way into the crankcase. Slowly remove it again.The oil level must not go above the line on the dipstick. If the level does not reach the line, which shows the smallest amount of oil required,remove the oil filler cap on the engine valve cover, and fill to with
in the “Good” range.
Do not push down strongly on the engine hood. Depending on how strongly or where you push down, you could create a dent in the vehicle body. The correct tire pressure for your vehicle is listed on the placard attached to the sill of the driver’s door. (Refer to “Tire and loading information plac-ard” on page 11-3.) The recommended inflation pressures should be used for the tires listed below. Tire pressures should be checked, and adjusted if necessary, at least once a month. Pressures should be checked more often whenever weather temperatures changeseverely, because tire pressures change with outdoor temperatures. The pressures listed on the placard are always “cold inflation pres-sure”. Cold inflation pressure
is measured after the
vehicle has been parked for at least threehours or is driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) after having been parked for three hours.
Cold inflation pressure must not go above the maximum values molded into the tire side- wall. After driving several miles, your tire inflation pressure may increase 14 to 41 KPA,2 to 6 PSI from the cold inflation pressure. Do not let air out of the tires to get back to the specified cold pressure, or your tire pressurewill be too low. Check your tires each time you refuel. If one tire looks lower than the others, check thepressure for all of them.You should also take the following safety pre- cautions: Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load-ing information placard attached to the sill of the driver’s door.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and air leaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on thevalve stems.

Replacing tires and wheels
CAUTION Avoid using different size tires and wheels from the ones listed, and avoid the combined use of different types of tires and wheels. Using different size or type tires and wheelsmay affect driving safety. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5. For All-wheel drive vehicles, always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences.Using tires that differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear, will increase the differen- tial oil temperature, resulting in possibledamage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage,component seizure, or other serious prob- lems. Even if a wheel has the same rim size and offset as the specified type of wheel, its shape may prevent it from being fitted cor-rectly. Consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice before using wheels that you have. Only Mitsubishi Motors genuine wheels should be used, because your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring sys- tem.Use of another type of wheel risks air leaks and sensor damage, as it will not be possible to install the tire pressure sensor properly.

Your vehicle is equipped with an emission- control system that meets all the requirementsof the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada. The emission-con- trol system is made of: a positive crankcase ventilation system an evaporative emission-control system an exhaust emission-control system
The maintenance services listed in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL” must be performed at the timesor mileages listed to keep the emission-con- trol system working properly. These, and all the other “general” maintenance serviceslisted in this manual, need to be performed to keep your vehicle running properly and reli- ably. You may need more frequent maintenance if you drive your vehicle in harsh conditions such as dusty areas or do a lot of start-and- stop driving. To be sure the emission-control system works properly, have your vehicle inspected and maintained by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice following the schedule in the “WAR- RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. You should also have an inspection and ser-vice any time you suspect a malfunction.

Check the hose surfaces for any heat and mechanical damage, hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts and abrasions. Pay spe- cial attention to the hoses closest to high heatsources such as the exhaust manifold. Emission-control system maintenance
NOTE
To meet government regulations and pro- mote cleaner air, your vehicle is equipped with an onboard diagnostic system (OBD).The engine electronic control module that controls OBD functions stores various data (especially about the exhaust emissions).This data will be erased if the battery cable is disconnected, which could make a rapid diagnosis difficult. Do not disconnect thebattery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) is on.

Use the spark plugs listed under “Engine specifications” on page 11-5 or plugs that are exactly the same. Other plugs could cause engine damage, performance problems or radio noise.
