Introduction to the restraint system
The restraint system can reduce the risk of
vehicle occupants coming into contact with
parts of the vehicle's interior in the event of
an accident. The restraint system can also
reduce the forces to which vehicle occupants
are subjected during an accident.
The restraint system comprises:
RSeat belt system
RAir bags
The components of the restraint system work in conjunction with each other. They can only
deploy their protective function if, at all times,
all vehicle occupants:
Rhave fastened their seat belts correctly
(
Ypage 43)
Rhave adjusted their seat and head restraint
properly (
Ypage 97).
As the driver, you also have to make sure that
the steering wheel is adjusted correctly.
Observe the information relating to the cor-
rect driver's seat position (
Ypage 96).
You also have to make sure that an air bag can
inflate properly if deployed (
Ypage 46).
An air bag supplements a correctly worn seat
belt. As an additional safety device, the air
bag increases the level of protection for vehi-
cle occupants in the event of an accident. For
example, if, in the event of an accident, the
protection offered by the seat belt is suffi-
cient, the air bags are not deployed. When an
accident occurs, only the air bags that
increase protection in that particular accident
situation are deployed. However, seat belts
and air bags generally do not protect against
objects penetrating the vehicle from the out-
side.

Introd uction

An air bag complements th ecorrectl yfas -
tene dseat belt .It is no substitut efor th eseat
belt .The air bag provide sadditional protec-
tion in applicable acciden tsituations.
Not all air bags are deployed in an accident.
The differen tair bag systems function inde-
pendentl yfrom on eanother (
Ypage 54) .
However, no system available today can com-
pletely eliminate injurie sand fatalities.
It is also no tpossible to rule out aris kof injury
caused by an air bag due to th ehigh spee dat
whic hth eair bag mus tbe deployed.

dashboard, for example. Your fee tmay oth-

bag.
RFo rthis reason ,always secure person sless
than 5ft (1.5 0m) tall in suitable restraint
systems. Up to this height, the seat belt
cannot be worn correctly.
If a child is traveling in your vehicle, also
observe the following notes:
RAlways secure children under twelve years
of age and less than 5 ft (1.50 m)tall in
suitable child restraint systems.
ROnly secure a child in a rearward-facing
child restraint system on the front-
passenger seat when the front-passenger
front air bag is deactivated. If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp is permanently lit, the front-passenger front
air bag is deactivated (
Ypage 41).
RAlways observe the instructions and safetynotes on the "Occupant Classification Sys-
tem (OCS)" (
Ypage 49) and on "Children
in the vehicle" (
Ypage 57) in addition to
the child restraint system manufacturer's
installation instructions.
Objects in the vehicle interior may pre-
vent an air bag from functioning correctly.
Before starting yo ur jo
urney and to avoid risks
resulting from the speed of the air bag as it
deploys, make sure that:
Rthere are no people, animals or objects
between the vehicle occupants and an air
bag.
Rthere are no objects between the seat, door
and B-pillar.

Rno accessories, such as cup holders, are
attached to the vehicle within the deploy-
ment area of an air bag, e.g. to doors or side
windows.
Rno heavy, sharp-edged or fragile objects
are in the pockets of your clothing. Store
such objects in a suitable place.
GWARNING
If you modify the air bag cover or affix objects
such as stickers to it, the air bag can no longer
function correctly. There is an increased risk
of injury.
Never modify an air bag cover or affix objects
to it.
GWARNING
Sensors to control the air bags are located in
the doors. Modifications or work not per-
formed correctly to the doors or door panel-
ing, as well as damaged doors, can lead to the
function of the sensors being impaired. The air
bags might therefore not function properly
anymore. Consequently, the air bags cannot
protect vehicle occupants as they are
designed to do. There is an increased risk of
injury.
Never modify the doors or parts of the doors.
Always have work on the doors or door pan-
eling carried out at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
Front air bags
Driver's air bag :deploys in front of the
steering wheel. Front-passenger front air bag
;deploys in front of and above the glove
box.
When deployed, the front air bags offer addi-
tional head and thorax protection for the
occupants in the driver's and front-passenger seats.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF and
PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamps
inform you of the status of the front-
passenger front air bag (
Ypage 41).
The front-passenger front air bag will only
deploy if:
Rthe system, based on the OCS weight sen-
sor readings, detects that the front-
passenger seat is occupied (
Ypage 49).
The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator
lamp is lit (
Ypage 49)
Rthe restraint system control unit predicts a
high accident severity
Knee bags
Driver's knee bag :deploys under the steer-
ing column and front-passenger knee bag ;
under the glove box. The driver's and front-
passenger knee bags are triggered together
with the front air bags.
The driver's and front-passenger knee bags
offer additional thigh, knee and lower leg pro-
tection.
Side impact air bags
GWARNING
Unsuitable seat covers could restrict or even
prevent the deployment of the air bags inte-

Important safety notes
!Make sure that there are no objectsinthe
footwe llor behind the seats. There is a dan-
ger that the seats and /or objects could be
damaged when PRE-SAFE
®is activated.
Although your vehicle is equipped with PRE-
SA FE
®, the possibilit y of injury in the event of
an acc ident cannot be ruled out. Always
adapt your driving style to suit the prevailing
road and weather conditions and maintain a
safe distance from the vehicle in front. Drive
carefully.
Function
PRE-SAFE®intervenes:
Rin emergency braking situations, e.g. when
BAS isactivated
Rincritical driving situations, e.g. when phys-
ical limit s are exceeded and the vehicle
understeers or oversteers severe ly
Ron vehicles with the Driving Assistance
package:ifBAS PLUS intervenes power-
fully or the radar sensor system detects an
imminent danger of collision incertain sit-
uations
PRE-SAFE
®takes the fol lowing measures
depe nding on the hazardous situation detec-
te d:
Rthe seat belts are pre-tensioned.
Rifthe vehicle skids, the side windows are
closed so that only a small gap remains.
Rvehicleswith the memory function: the
front-passenger seat is adjusted if it is inan
unfavor ableposition.
Rvehicles with the memory function: the
front-passenger seat isadjusted if it is inan
unfavor ableposition.
If the hazardous situation passes without
resulting inan accident, PRE-SAFE
®slackens
the belt pre-tensioning. All settings made by
PRE-SAFE
®can then bereversed. If
the seat belt pre-tensioning isnot reduce d:
XMove the seat backrest or seat back
slightlywhen the vehicle isstationary.
The seat beltpre-tensioning isreduced and
the locking mec hanismi
s released.
The seat-belt adjustment isan integral part of
the PRE-SAFE
®convenience function. You
will find information on the convenience func-
tion under "Be ltadjustment" (
Ypage 45).
Automatic measures after an acci-
dent
Im mediately after an accident, the following
measures are implemented, depending on
the type and severity of the impact:
Rthe hazard warning lamps are activated

Rthe vehicle doors are unlocked
Rthe front side windows are lowered
Rvehicles with a memory function: the elec-

Confirmation that the child restraint system
corresponds to the standards canbefound
on an instruction label on the child restraint
system. This confirmation can also befound
in the installation instructions that are inclu-
ded with the ch ildrestraint system.
Observe the warning labels inthe vehicle inte-
rior and on the child restraint system.
Child restraint system on the front-
passenger seat
General notes
If you install a child restraint system onto the
front-passenger seat, always observe the
instructions and safety notes on the "Occu-
pant Classification System (OCS)"
(
Ypage 49).
You can thus avoid the risks that could arise
as a result of:
Ran incorrect lycategorized person inthe
front-passenger seat
Rthe unintentional deactivation of the front-
passenger front air bag
Rthe unsuita blepositioning of the child
restraint system, e.g. too close to the dash-
board
Rearward-facing child restraint system
If it is absolute lynecessary to install a rear-
ward-facing ch ildrestraint system on the
front-passenger seat, always make sure that
the front-passenger front air bag is deactiva-
te d. Only if the PASS ENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp ispermanently lit (
Ypage 41)
is the front-passenger front air bag deactiva-
te d.
Always observe the child restraint system
manufacturer's installation and operating
instructions.
Forward-facing child restraint system
If you secure a ch ild ina forward-facing ch ild
restraint system on the front-passenger seat,
always move the front-passenger seat as far
back as possible. The entire base of the ch ild
restraint system must always rest on the seat
cushion of the front-passenger seat. The
backrest of the ch ildrestraint system must lie
as flat as possible against the backrest of the
front-passenger seat. The ch ildrestraint sys-
tem must not touch the roof or besubjected
to a load bythe head restraint. Adjust the
ang leof the seat backrest and the head
restraint position accordingly. Always make
sure that the shoulder belt strap iscorrect ly
routed from the front-passenger seat belt
loop to the shoulder beltguide on the ch ild
restraint system. The shoulder belt strap
must berouted forwards and downwards
from the front-passenger seat beltloop.
Always observe the ch ildrestraint system
manufacturer's installation and operating
instructions.

In the following situations, it may be better to
activate SPORT handling mode or deactivate
ESP
®:
Rwhen using snow chains
Rin deep snow
Ron sand or gravel
Ron specially designated roads when the
vehicle's own oversteering and understeer- ing characteristics are desired
Driving in SPORT handling mode or without
ESP
®requires an extremely qualified and
experienced driver.
iActivate ESP®as soon as the situations
described above no longer apply. ESP®will
otherwise not be able to stabilize the vehi-
cle if the vehicle starts to skid or a wheel
starts to spin.
!Avoid spinning the driven wheels for an
extended period with ESP®deactivated.
You could otherwise damage the drivetrain.

Characteristics of activated SPORT han-
dling mode
If SPORT handling mode is activated and one
or more wheels start to spin, the ÷ESP
®
warning lamp in the instrument cluster
flashes. ESP®only stabilizes the vehicle to a
limited degree.
When SPORT handling mode is activated:
RESP®only improves driving stability to a
limited degree.
Rtraction control is still activated.
Rengine torque is no longer limited and the
drive wheels are able to spin.
The spinning of the wheels results in a cut-
ting action for better traction on loose sur-
faces.
Rthe engine's torque is restricted only to a
limited degree and the drive wheels can
spin. The spinning of the wheels results in a
cutting action, which provides better grip.
RESP®still provides support when you brake
firmly.
Characteristics when ESP
®is deactivated
If ESP
®is deactivated and one or more wheels
start to spin, the ÷ESP®warning lamp in
the instrument cluster flashes. In such situa-
tions, ESP
®will not stabilize the vehicle.
If you deactivate ESP
®:
RESP®no longer improves driving stability.
Rengine torque is no longer limited and the
drive wheels are able to spin.
