Important safety notes
United Kingdom only: G
WARNING
When the double locks are activated, the
doors can no longer be opened from the
inside. People in the vehicle can no longer get out, e.g. in hazardous situations. There is a
risk of injury.
Therefore, do not leave any people unsuper-
vised in the vehicle, particularly children, eld-
erly people or people in need of special assis-
tance. Do not activate the double lock when
people are in the vehicle.
If the vehicle has been locked from the outside, the double lock function is activated as stand-
ard. It is then not possible to open the doors
from inside the vehicle. You can deactivate the
double lock function by deactivating the interior
motion sensor (see Digital Owner's Manual).
The doors can then be opened from the inside
after the vehicle has been locked from the out-
side. The anti-theft alarm system is triggered if
the door is opened from the inside. Switch off
the alarm (Y page 79).
All countries: G
WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle, they can:
R open doors and endanger other persons or
road users
R climb out and be injured by the traffic
R operate vehicle equipment and, for exam-
ple, trap themselves. Children could also set the vehicle in motion,
for example by:
R releasing the parking brake
R shifting the automatic transmission out of
park position P
R starting the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave
children unattended in the vehicle. Always
keep the key out of reach of children. Unlocking and opening the doors
from the inside
United Kingdom only: if the vehicle has been
locked with the key or with KEYLESS-GO, the
double lock function is activated as standard. It is then not possible to open the doors from
inside the vehicle. You can deactivate the dou-
ble lock function by deactivating the interior
motion sensor (see Digital Owner's Manual).
The doors can then be opened from the inside
after the vehicle has been locked from the out-
side. You can open the rear doors from inside
the vehicle only if they are not secured by the
child-proof locks (Y page 67). The anti-theft
alarm system is triggered if the door is opened
from the inside. Switch off the alarm
(Y page 79).
For all countries except the United Kingdom:
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can open the rear
doors from inside the vehicle only if they are not
secured by the child-proof locks (Y page 67). If
the vehicle has previously been locked with the
key or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a door from
the inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm sys-
tem. Switch off the alarm (Y page 79).88

You can also switch the automatic locking func-
tion on and off using the multimedia system (see
the Digital Owner's Manual). Locking/unlocking the driver's door
with the emergency key element
i In order to lock all of the vehicle's locks,
begin by pressing the button for locking the
vehicle from the inside while the driver's door is open. Then proceed to lock the driver's
door using the emergency key element. X
Insert the emergency key element into open-
ing :in the protective cap.
X Pull and hold the door handle.
X Pull the protective cap on the emergency key
as straight as possible away from the vehicle until it releases.
X Release the door handle. X
To lock: turn the emergency key element
clockwise as far as it will go to position 1.
X To unlock: turn the emergency key element
anti-clockwise as far as it will go to position
1. Right-hand-drive vehicle:
turn the emergency
key element in the opposite direction in both
cases.
If you use the emergency key element to unlock
and open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered. Switch off the alarm

WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate is open when the engine is running, particu-
larly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust fumes
could enter the passenger compartment.
There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the tail-
gate. Never drive with the tailgate open. G
WARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury, especially when braking or abruptly changing directions.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the rear
when opened. Therefore, make sure that
there is sufficient clearance above and behind
the tailgate.
The opening dimensions of the tailgate can be
found in the "Vehicle data" section
(Y page 379).
You can limit the opening angle of the tailgate
(Y page 94).
Do not leave the key in the luggage compart-
ment. If you do so, you could lock yourself out.
Stow luggage or loads preferably in the luggage
compartment. Observe the loading guidelines
(Y page 305). 90

Tailgate obstruction detection with
reversing function
Vehicles with remote tailgate closing:
The tailgate is equipped with automatic obstacle detection with reversing function. If a solid
object blocks or restricts the tailgate when auto-
matically opening, this process is stopped. If a
solid object blocks or restricts the tailgate when
automatically closing, the tailgate automatically opens again slightly. The automatic obstacle
detection with reversing function is only an aid.
It is not a substitute for your attention when
opening and closing the tailgate. G
WARNING
The reversing function does not react:
R to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. fingers
R over the last 8 mm of the closing path
In these situations in particular, the reversing
function cannot prevent someone being trap-
ped. There is a risk of injury.
When closing, make sure that no body parts
are in the closing area.
If someone is trapped:
R press the Fbutton on the key or
R pull or push the remote operating switch on
the driver's door or
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate or
R push the top of the star on the tailgate
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS:
It is also possible to stop the closing process by
making a kicking movement under the rear
bumper. Opening and closing automatically

if you have your hands full. To do this, make a
kicking movement under the bumper with your
foot.
Observe the following points:
R Carry your KEYLESS-GO key with you. The key
must be in the KEYLESS-GO detection range
to the rear of the vehicle.
R When making the kicking movement, make
sure that you are standing firmly on the
ground and that there is sufficient clearance
to the rear of the vehicle. You could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice. R
Always ensure that you only make a kicking
movement within the detection range of sen- sors :.
R Stand at least 30 cm away from the rear area
while doing so.
R Do not come into contact with the bumper
while making the kicking movement. Other-
wise, the sensors may not function correctly.
R HANDS-FREE ACCESS does not function dur-
ing engine start.
R Dirt caused by road salt around sensors :
may restrict functionality.
Using HANDS-FREE ACCESS with a pros-
thetic leg may restrict functionality.
R If a KEYLESS-GO key is in the KEYLESS-GO
detection range to the rear of the vehicle,
HANDS-FREE ACCESS could be triggered. The tailgate could thus be opened or closed
unintentionally, for example, if you:
- fold the ball coupling in or out
- couple or uncouple a trailer
- fit or remove a rear-mounted bicycle rack
- load/unload bicycles on/from a rear-
mounted bicycle rack
- sit on the edge of the luggage compartment
- set down or lift up an object behind the
vehicle
- polish the rear of the vehicle
Do not carry the KEYLESS-GO key with you in such situations. This will prevent uninten-
tional opening or closing of the tailgate.
Operation X
To open or close: kick into sensor detection
range :under the bumper with your foot.
Two warning tones sound while the tailgate is opening or closing.
X If the tailgate does not open or close after
several attempts: wait at least ten seconds
then kick under the bumper once again.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for too
long, the tailgate does not open or close. Repeat
the kicking movement more quickly if this
occurs.
To stop the opening or closing process, you have the following options:
R Kick with your foot into sensor detection
range :under the bumper.
R Press the top of the star on the tailgate.
R Press the closing button on the tailgate.
R Press the Fbutton on the key.
If the tailgate closing process has been stopped:
