To unlock the tailgate: pull tailgate han-
dle C .
Deactivating and activating If you do not intend to use the vehicle for a
longer period of time, you can deactivate KEY-
LESS-GO. The SmartKey will then use very lit-
tle power, thereby conserving battery power.
For the purposes of activation/deactivation,
the vehicle must not be nearby. X
To deactivate: press the 7 button on
the SmartKey twice in rapid succession.
The battery check lamp of the SmartKey
flashes twice briefly and lights up once,
then KEYLESS-GO is deactivated
( Y
page 80). X
To activate: press any button on the
SmartKey.
or X
Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
KEYLESS-GO and all of its associated fea-
tures are available again.
KEYLESS-GO start function
General notes
Bear in mind that the engine can be started by
any of the vehicle occupants if there is a
SmartKey in the vehicle. Changing the settings of the locking
system You can change the settings of the locking
system. This means that only the driver's door
and the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the
vehicle is unlocked. This is useful if you fre-
quently travel on your own. X
To change the setting: press and hold the
6 and 7 buttons simultaneously for
approximately six seconds until the battery
indicator lamp flashes twice ( Y
page 80).
If the setting of the locking system is changed
within the signal range of the vehicle, press-
ing the 7 or 6 button: R
locks or R
unlocks the vehicle
The SmartKey now functions as follows: X
To unlock: press the 6 button once.X
To unlock centrally: press the 6 but-
ton twice. X
To lock centrally: press the 7 button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as fol-
lows: X
To unlock the driver's door: touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door. X
To unlock centrally: touch the inner sur-
face of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door. X
To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles. X
To restore the factory settings: press
and hold the 6 and 7 buttons simul-
taneously for app roximately six seconds

Opening and closing

Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the insideYou can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This can be useful if you wish
to lock the vehicle before pulling away, for
example. X
To unlock: press button C .X
To lock: press button D .
If all the doors and the tailgate are closed,
the vehicle locks.
Meanwhile, the fuel filler flap will not be
locked or unlocked.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO.
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can open the
rear doors from inside the vehicle unless they
are secured by the child-proof lock
( Y
page 64).
If the vehicle has previously been locked with
the SmartKey from the outside, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft
alarm system. Switch off the alarm
( Y
page 73).
If a locked door is opened from the inside, the
previous unlock status of the vehicle will be
taken into consideration if: R
the vehicle was locked using the locking
button for the central locking, or R
if the vehicle was locked automatically
The vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had pre-
viously been fully unlocked. If only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked, only the door which has been opened from the inside
is unlocked.
Automatic locking feature X
To deactivate: press and hold button C
for approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds. X
To activate: press and hold button D for
approximately five seconds until a tone
sounds.
If you press one of the two buttons and do not
hear a tone, the relevant setting has already
been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore lock yourself out if: R
the vehicle is being pushed. R
the vehicle is being towed. R
the vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board com-
puter ( Y
page 230).
Unlocking the driver's door (mechan-
ical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO,
use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered ( Y
page 73).84

Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise

Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary. X
Close the driver's door. X
Take the mechanical key out of the Smart-
Key ( Y

Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far as
it will go to position G .X
Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it. X
Make sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked. X

i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-

ing automatic closing of the tailgate. More-
over, people, e.g. children, may be standing in
the closing area or may enter the closing area
during the closing process. There is a risk of
injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process: R
press the T button on the SmartKey. R

gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running, particu-
larly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust fumes
could enter the passenger compartment.
There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the tail-
gate. Never drive with the tailgate open.
G WARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury, particu-
larly in the event of sudden braking or a sud-
den change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

found in the "Vehicle data" section
( Y
page 383).
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the load-
ing guidelines ( Y
page 280).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo com-
partment. You could otherwise lock yourself
out.

vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate:

Obstacle recognition with tailgate
reversing feature On vehicles with an EASY-PACK tailgate, the
tailgate is equipped with automatic obstacle
recognition with a reversing feature. If a solid
object blocks or restricts the tailgate when
automatically opening or closing, this proce-
dure is stopped. If the tailgate is stopped dur-
ing the closing process, the tailgate automat-
ically opens again slightly. The automatic
obstacle recognition with reversing feature is
only an aid. It is not a substitute for your
attentiveness when opening and closing the
tailgate.
G WARNING
The reversing feature does not react: R
to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-
gers R
over the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these sit-
uations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped: R
press the T button on the SmartKey, or R
pull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door or R
press the closing button/STOP button in
the tailgate or R
pull the handle on the tailgate86

Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate and
KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start func-
tion: if the key is located in the immediate
vicinity of the vehicle, press the T but-
ton on the key.
You can release the button as soon as the
tailgate starts to close.
Vehicles with EASY-PACK tailgate and
KEYLESS-GO: when the driver's door is
closed you can simultaneously close the tail-
gate and lock the vehicle. The KEYLESS-GO
key must be in the rear detection range of the
vehicle. X
To close the tailgate and lock the vehi-
cle: press locking button D on the tailgate.
If a SmartKey is detected outside the vehi-
cle within the rear detection range of KEY-
LESS-GO, the tailgate closes.
The vehicle is locked. X
To stop the closing process : press but-
ton C on the tailgate again.

Pull the handle in the tailgate.

Press the T button on the key until the

Opening and closing automatically You can open the tailgate from the driver's
seat when the vehicle is stationary and
unlocked.
It is only possible to close the tailgate from
the driver's seat on vehicles with the EASY-
PACK tailgate.

To open: pull remote operating switch for
the tailgate C until the tailgate opens.X
To close: turn the SmartKey to position 1
or 2 in the ignition lock ( Y

Press and hold remote operating switch for
the tailgate C until the tailgate is com-
pletely closed.
Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate
General notes
! Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle
outside.
You can limit the opening angle of the tail-
gate. This could be useful, for example, if
there is insufficient space above the tailgate.
It is possible to limit the tailgate in the top half
of its opening range. To open the tailgate fully, pull the handle on
the outside of the tailgate again after it has
stopped automatically. This does not delete
the stored position.
Activating X
To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate. X
To stop the opening process at the
desired position: R
press the closing button in the tailgate, or R
pull the handle on the outside of the tail-
gate again, or R
press the tailgate button on the key. X
To store the position: press and hold the
closing button in the tailgate until two short
tones sound.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening.
Deactivating X
Press and hold the closing button in the
tailgate until you hear a short tone.

Side windows
Important safety notes

While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side win-
dow and the door frame as the side window
moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side win-
dow during the opening procedure. If some-
body becomes trapped, release the switch or
pull the switch to close the side window again.
G WARNING
While closing the side windows, body parts in
the closing area could become trapped. There
is a risk of injury.
When closing make sure that no parts of the
body are in the closing area. If somebody becomes trapped, release the switch or press
the switch to open the side window again.
G WARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are
left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear side
windows. When leaving the vehicle, always
take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehi-
cle. Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle.
Side window reversing feature The side windows are equipped with an auto-
matic reversing feature. If a solid object
blocks or restricts a side window from trav-
eling upwards during the automatic closing
process, the side window opens again auto-
matically. During the manual closing process,
the side window only opens again automati-
cally after the corresponding switch is
released. The automatic reversing feature is
only an aid and is no substitute for your atten-
tion when closing a side window.
G WARNING
The reversing feature does not react: R

while resetting
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these sit-
uations. There is a risk of injury.
