Front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light
This indicator light turns on to remind you that the front passenger front and side air bags
and seat belt pretensioner will not deploy during a collision.
If the front passenger occupant classi ¿ cation sensor is normal, the indicator light turns
on when the ignition is switched ON. The light turns off after a few seconds. Then, the
indicator light turns on or is off under the following conditions:

*1 The occupant classi ¿ cation sensor may not detect a child seated on the seat, in a child-restraint system, or a
junior seat depending on the child's physical size and seated posture.
*2 If a smaller adult sits on the front passenger seat, the sensors might detect the person as being a child depending
on the person's physique.
The curtain air bag is ready for in À ating regardless of what the front passenger air bag
deactivation indicator light on/off condition chart indicates.
If the front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light does not turn on when the ignition
is switched ON and does not turn on as indicated in the front passenger air bag deactivation
indicator light on/off condition chart, do not allow an occupant to sit in the front passenger
seat and consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible. The system may not work
properly in an accident.

WARNING
Do not allow an occupant in the front passenger's seat to sit with a posture which
makes it diffi cult for the front passenger occupant classifi cation sensor to detect the
occupant correctly:
Sitting in the front passenger's seat with a posture which makes it diffi cult for the front
passenger occupant classifi cation sensor to detect the occupant correctly is dangerous.
If the front passenger occupant classifi cation sensor cannot detect the occupant sitting
on the front passenger's seat correctly, the front passenger front and side air bags and
pretensioner system may not operate (deploy) or they may operate (deploy) accidentally.
The front passenger will not have the supplementary protection of the air bags or the
accidental operation (deployment) of the air bags could result in serious injury or death.
Under the following conditions, the front passenger occupant classifi cation sensor
cannot detect a passenger sitting on the front passenger's seat correctly and the
deployment/non-deployment of the air bags cannot be controlled as indicated in the
front passenger air bag deactivation indicator light on/off condition chart. For example:
¾ A front passenger is seated as shown in the following fi gure:
¾ A rear passenger pushes up on the front passenger seat with their feet.
¾ Luggage or other items placed under the front passenger seat or between the front
passenger seat and driver seat that push up the front passenger seat bottom.

y When the ignition is switched to ACC
or ON, the vehicle lock-out prevention
feature prevents you from locking
yourself out of the vehicle.
All doors and the liftgate will
automatically unlock if they are locked
using the power door locks with any
door or the liftgate open.
The vehicle lock-out prevention feature
does not operate while the ignition is
switched off.
When any door is opened from the
outside while the key is inside the
vehicle, the closed doors are locked. All
the doors are automatically unlocked by
closing the open door.
(With the advanced keyless function)
The beep sound is heard for about 10
seconds to notify the driver that the key
has been left in the vehicle.
(Without the advanced keyless
function)
The horn sound is heard twice to notify
the driver that the key has been left in
the vehicle.
y (Door unlock (control) system with
collision detection)
This system automatically unlocks
the doors and the liftgate in the event
the vehicle is involved in an accident
to allow passengers to get out of the
vehicle immediately and prevent being
trapped inside. While the ignition
is switched ON and in the event the
vehicle receives an impact strong
enough to in À ate the air bags, all the
doors and the liftgate are automatically
unlocked after about 6 seconds have
elapsed from the time of the accident.
The doors and the liftgate may not
unlock depending on how an impact
is applied, the force of the impact, and
other conditions of the accident.
If door-related systems or the battery
is malfunctioning, the doors and the
liftgate will not unlock.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a
few precautions in the ¿ rst 1,000 km
(600 miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
y Do not race the engine.
y Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
y Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
y Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
y Avoid full-throttle starts.
y Do not tow a trailer.
Saving Fuel and
Protection
of the Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO2.
y Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
y Avoid fast starts.
y Drive at lower speeds.
y Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
y Follow the maintenance schedule
(page 6-4 ) and have an Authorized
Mazda Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
y Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
y Slow down on rough roads.
y Keep the tires properly in À ated.
y Do not carry unnecessary weight.
y Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
y Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
y Keep windows closed at high speeds.
y Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.
WARNING
Never stop the engine when going down
a hill:
Stopping the engine when going
down a hill is dangerous. This causes
the loss of power steering and power
brake control, and may cause damage
to the drivetrain. Any loss of steering
or braking control could cause an
accident.

Passing
Plan well ahead to pass other vehicles, and provide plenty of room before changing lanes.
Crosswinds from passing vehicles, especially larger ones, and the effects of rough roads will
affect handling.
If swaying occurs, ¿ rmly grip the steering wheel and reduce speed immediately, but
gradually.
Steer straight ahead. If no extreme correction of steering or braking is made, the
combination of less speed and ¿ rm steering will result in stability.
Backing up
Backing a vehicle with a trailer requires practice and patience. Back slowly, and have a
helper outside at the rear of the trailer to reduce the risk of an accident.
To turn the trailer, place your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and turn it in the
direction you want the trailer to go. Make only slight movements to prevent sharp or
prolonged turning.
Ascending a hill
Shift into a lower gear to reduce the possibility of overloading or overheating the engine, or
both.
Descending a hill
Shift into a lower gear and use engine compression as a braking effect.
WARNING
Always use lower gears to reduce speed:
Holding the brake pedal down too long or too frequently is dangerous as it could cause
the brakes to overheat and lose power, resulting in loss of control and a serious accident.
Use lower gears to help reduce speed. Pull off the road and allow brakes to cool down
whenever braking performance feels reduced.
Overheated engine
The extra weight of the trailer may strain the engine on hot days and on long or steep
upgrades.
If the temperature gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioner, drive safely
to the side of the road, park off the right-of-way and wait for engine to cool. Refer to
Overheating on page 7-24 .

y Under the following conditions, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.
y If there is the possibility of partial contact with a vehicle ahead.
y When driving on continuously curving roads, and entering and exiting exits.
y Elongated luggage or cargo is loaded onto installed roof rails and covers the laser
sensor (front).
y Exhaust gas from the vehicle in front, sand, snow, and water vapor rising from
manholes and grating, and water splashed into the air.
y When towing a malfunctioning vehicle.
y When driving with tires having signi ¿ cantly different wear.
y In the following cases, the laser sensor (front) may inadvertently determine that there is a
vehicle ahead and the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may operate.
y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve.
y Vehicles passing in the opposite lane while making a curve.
y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.
y When passing through a toll gate equipped with a bar.
y When passing under a vinyl curtain or À ag.
y Plastic objects such as pylons.
y Two-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, animals or standing trees.
y When the system operates, the user is noti ¿ ed by the multi-information display.
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) warning indication (amber) turns on when the
system has a malfunction.

CAUTION
Heed the following precautions to assure correct operation of each system.
¾ Do not adhere stickers (including transparent stickers) to the surface of the radiator
grille and front emblem in and around the radar sensor (front), and do not replace
the radiator grille and front emblem with any product that is not a genuine product
designed for use with the radar sensor (front).
¾ The radar sensor (front) includes a function for detecting soiling of the radar sensor's
front surface and informing the driver, however, depending on the conditions, it may
require time to detect or it may not detect plastic shopping bags, ice or snow. If this
occurs, the system may not operate correctly, therefore always keep the radar sensor
(front) clean.
¾ Do not install a grille guard.
¾ If the front part of the vehicle has been damaged in a vehicle accident, the position of
the radar sensor (front) may have moved. Stop the system immediately and always
have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
¾ Do not use the front bumper to push other vehicles or obstructions such as when
pulling out of a parking space. Otherwise, the radar sensor (front) could be hit and its
position deviated.
¾ Do not remove, disassemble, or modify the radar sensor (front).
¾ For repairs, replacement or paint work around the radar sensor (front), consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
¾ Do not modify the suspension. If the suspension are modifi ed, the vehicle's posture
could change and the radar sensor (front) may not be able to correctly detect a vehicle
ahead or an obstruction.

y The detection ability of the radar sensors (rear) has limitations. In the following cases,
the detection ability may lower and the system may not operate normally.
y The rear bumper near the radar sensors (rear) has become deformed.
y Snow, ice or mud adheres to the radar sensors (rear) on the rear bumper.
y Under bad weather conditions such as rain, snow and fog.
y Under the following conditions, the radar sensors (rear) cannot detect target objects or it
may be dif ¿ cult to detect them.
y Stationary objects on a road or a road side such as small, two-wheeled vehicles,
bicycles, pedestrians, animals, and shopping carts.
y Vehicle shapes which do not re À ect radar waves well such as empty trailers with a low
vehicle height and sports cars.
y Vehicles are shipped with the direction of the radar sensors (rear) adjusted for each
vehicle to a loaded vehicle condition so that the radar sensors (rear) detect approaching
vehicles correctly. If the direction of the radar sensors (rear) has deviated for some
reason, have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
y For repairs or replacement of the radar sensors (rear), or bumper repairs, paintwork,
and replacement near the radar sensors, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
y Turn off the system while pulling a trailer or while an accessory such as a bicycle carrier
is installed to the rear of the vehicle. Otherwise, the radio waves emitted by the radar will
be blocked causing the system to not operate normally.
y The radar sensors are regulated by the relevant radio wave laws of the country in which
the vehicle is driven. If the vehicle is driven abroad, authorization from the country in
which the vehicle is driven may be required.
