How does the air bag system operate
Air bags are activated (able toinflate if necessary) only when the
engine start/stop button is turned
to the ON or START position.
Air bags inflate instantly in the event of a serious frontal collisionor side collision in order to help
protect the occupants from serious
physical injury.
There is no single speed at which the air bags will inflate.
Generally, air bags are designed to
inflate based upon the severity of a
collision and its direction. These
two factors determine whether thesensors produce an electronic
deployment/ inflation signal.
Air bag deployment depends on a number of factors including vehiclespeed, angles of impact and the
density and stiffness of the vehi-
cles or objects which your vehicle
hits in the collision. The determin-
ing factors are not limited to those
mentioned above. The front air bags will completely
inflate and deflate in an instant.
It is virtually impossible for you to
see the air bags inflate during anaccident.
It is much more likely that you will simply see the deflated air bags
hanging out of their storage com-
partments after the collision.
In order to help provide protection in a severe collision, the air bags
must inflate rapidly. The speed ofair bag inflation is a consequence
of the extremely short time inwhich a collision occurs and the
need to inflate the air bag between
the occupant and the vehicle struc-
tures before the occupant impacts
those structures. This speed of
inflation reduces the risk of serious
or life-threatening injuries in a
severe collision and is thus a nec-
essary part of air bag design.
However, air bag inflation can also
cause injuries which can include
facial abrasions, bruises and bro-
ken bones because the inflationspeed also causes the air bags to
expand with a great deal of force.WARNING
Even in vehicles with air bags, you and your passengers
must always wear the safety
belts provided in order to min-
imize the risk and severity of
injury in the event of a colli-
sion or rollover.
SRS and pretensioners con- tain explosive chemicals.
If scraping a vehicle without
removing SRS and pretension-
ers from a vehicle, it may cause
fire. Before scraping a vehicle,
we recommend that you con-
tact an authorized Kia dealer.
Keep the SRS parts and wirings away from water or any
liquid. If the SRS components
are inoperative due to expo-
sure to water or liquids, it may
cause fire or severe injury.

WARNING
NEVER use a rearward facing child restraint on a seat pro-
tected by an ACTIVE AIR BAG
in front of it, DEATH or SERI-
OUS INJURY to the CHILD can
occur.
Never put a child restraint in the front passenger’s seat. If
the front passenger air bag
inflates, it can cause serious
or fatal injuries.
When children are seated in the rear outboard seats of a
vehicle equipped with side
and/or curtain air bags, be sure
to install the child restraint sys-
tem as far away from the door
side as possible, and securely
lock the child restraint system
in position. Inflation of side
and/or curtain air bags could
cause serious injury or death
to an infant or child.

if a crash impact is severe enough to
require air bag deployment or pre-
tensioner seat belt deployment.
The SRS air bag warning light " "
on the instrument panel will illumi-
nate for about 6 seconds after the
engine start/stop button is turned tothe ON position, after which the SRS
air bag warning light " " should goout.

The SRS can function only
when the Engine Start/Stop
button is in the ON position. If
the SRS air bag warning light
does not illuminate, or continu-
ously remains on after illumi-
nating for about 6 seconds
when the Engine Start/Stop
button is turned to the ON posi-
tion, or after the engine is start-
ed, comes on while driving, the
SRS is not working properly.
If this occurs, we recommend that the system be inspected
by an authorized Kia dealer.
Before you replace a fuse or disconnect a battery terminal,
turn the engine start/stop but-
ton to the OFF position. Never
remove or replace the air bagrelated fuse(s) when the
engine start/stop button is in
the ON position. Failure toheed this warning will cause
the SRS “ ” warning light to
illuminate.

Side air bag (Continued)
The SRS air bag system mustdeploy very rapidly to provide
protection in a crash. If anoccupant is out of positionbecause of not wearing a seat
belt, the air bag may forcefullycontact the occupant causingserious or fatal injuries.(Continued)
For maximum safety protec-tion in all types of crashes, all
occupants including the driver
should always wear their seat
belts whether or not an air bag
is also provided at their seat-
ing position to minimize the
risk of severe injury or death
in the event of a crash. Do not sit or lean unnecessar-
ily close to the air bag while
the vehicle is in motion.
Sitting improperly or out of position can result in serious
or fatal injury in a crash. Alloccupants should sit upright
with the seat back in an upright
position, centered on the seatcushion with their seat belt on,
legs comfortably extended and
their feet on the floor until the
vehicle is parked and the
Engine Start/Stop button is inthe OFF position.

Curtain air bag
Curtain air bags are located along
both sides of the roof rails above the
front and rear doors. They are designed to help protect theheads of the front seat occupantsand the rear outboard seat occupants
in certain side impact collisions.
The curtain air bags are designed to
deploy only during certain side
impact collisions, depending on the
crash severity, angle, speed and
impact. The curtain air bags are not
designed to deploy in all side impact
situations, collisions from the front or
rear of the vehicle or in most rollover
situations.(Continued)
Do not use any accessory
seat covers.
Use of seat covers could reduce or prevent the effec- tiveness of the system.
Do not install any accessories on the side or near the side air
bag.
Do not place any objects over the air bag or between the air
bag and yourself.
Do not place any objects (an umbrella, bag, etc.) between
the door and the seat. Such
objects may become danger-
ous projectiles and cause
injury if the supplemental side
air bag inflates.
To prevent unexpected deploy- ment of the side air bag that
may result in personal injury,
avoid impact to the sideimpact sensor when the
Engine Start/Stop button is on.
If the seat or seat cover is dam- aged, we recommend that the
system be serviced by an

SRS Care
The SRS is virtually maintenance-free
and so there are no parts you can
safely service by yourself. If the SRS
air bag warning light does not illumi-
nate, or continuously remains on, werecommend that the system be
inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.(Continued)
No objects should be placed
over or near the air bag mod- ules on the steering wheel,
instrument panel, and the
front passenger's panel above
the glove box, because any
such object could cause harm
if the vehicle is in a crash
severe enough to cause the
air bags to inflate.
If the air bags inflate, we rec- ommend that the system be
replaced by an authorized Kia
dealer.
Do not tamper with or discon- nect SRS wiring, or othercomponents of the SRS sys-
tem. Doing so could result in
injury, due to accidental infla-
tion of the air bags or by ren-
dering the SRS inoperative.

WARNING
Modification to SRS compo- nents or wiring, including the
addition of any kind of badges
to the pad covers or modifica-
tions to the body structure,
can adversely affect SRS per-
formance and lead to possible
injury.
For cleaning the air bag pad covers, use only a soft, dry
cloth or one which has been
moistened with plain water.
Solvents or cleaners could
adversely affect the air bag
covers and proper deploy-ment of the system.
