Information
 The fuel tank capacity is given in section 8.
 The fuel gauge is supplemented by a low fuel warning light, which will
illuminate when the fuel tank is
nearly empty.
 On inclines or curves, the fuel gauge pointer may fluctuate or the low fuel
warning light may come on earlier
than usual due to the movement of
fuel in the tank.i
Fuel vapors are dangerous.
Before refueling, always stop
the engine and never allowsparks or open flames near the
filler area. If you need to replace
the filler cap, we recommend
that you use parts for replace-
ment from an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer. If you open thefuel filler cap during high ambi-
ent temperatures, a slight “pres-
sure sound” may be heard. This
is normal and not a cause forconcern.
Whenever you open the fuel
filler cap, turn it slowly.
WARNING
Fuel gauge
Running out of fuel can expose
vehicle occupants to danger.
You must stop and obtain addi-
tional fuel as soon as possibleafter the warning light comes
on or when the gauge indicator
comes close to the O (Empty)
level.
WARNING
Avoid driving with a extremely
low fuel level. Running out offuel could cause the engine to
misfire damaging the catalytic
converter.
CAUTION
Be sure to fill with the speci- fied fuel.(Diesel)
Be sure to lock the fuel filler
cap with the key after fillingwith the specified fuel.

Engine OverheatWarning Light
This indicates a coolant temperature.
When a temperature is above the
normal range, the engine overheat
warning light illuminates.
When there is a telecommunication
error, the engine overheat warning
light blinks.
Air bag Warning Light(if equipped)
This warning light illuminates:
Once you set the ignition switch to the ON position.
- It illuminates for approximately 6seconds and then goes off.
When there is a malfunction with the SRS.
In this case, we recommend that
you have the vehicle inspected by
an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Low Fuel Level
Warning Light
This warning light illuminates:
When the fuel tank is nearly empty.
This warning light blinks:
When the fuel sensor is disconnect- ed.
If the fuel tank is nearly empty:
Add fuel as soon as possible.
- Low Fuel Level
Driving with the Low Fuel Level warning light on or with the fuel
level below “0 or E” can cause the
engine to misfire and damage the
catalytic converter (if equipped).
NOTICE
The illumination of the engine
overheat warning light indicates
that the engine is over-heated.
Refer to the chapter 6, "What to
Do in an Emergency."

What to do in an emergency
If you have a flat tire while driving
If a tire goes flat while you are driv- ing:
1.Take your foot off the acceleratorpedal and let the vehicle slow
down while driving straight ahead.
Do not apply the brakes immedi-ately or attempt to pull off the road
as this may cause a loss of control.
When the vehicle has slowed to
such a speed that it is safe to do
so, brake carefully and pull off the
road. Drive off the road as far as
possible and park on firm, level
ground. If you are on a divided
highway, do not park in the median
area between the two traffic lanes.
2.When the vehicle is stopped, turn on your emergency hazard flash-
ers, set the parking brake and put
the transmission in reverse.
3.Have all passengers get out of the vehicle. Be sure they all get out on
the side of the vehicle that is away
from traffic.
4.When changing a flat tire, follow the instruction provided later in thissection.
If engine stalls while driving
1.Reduce your speed gradually,keeping a straight line. Move cau-
tiously off the road to a safe place.
2.Turn on your emergency flashers.
3.Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, we recom-
mend that you contact an author-
ized HYUNDAI dealer.If engine doesn't turn over or
turns over slowly
1.Check the battery connections tobe sure they are clean and tight.
2.Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operate
the starter, the battery is dis-charged.
3.Check the starter connections to be sure they are securely tight-ened.
4.Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See instructions for "Jump
starting".

If the engine will not start, do
not push or pull the vehicle to
start it. This could result in acollision or cause other dam-
age. In addition, push or pull
starting may cause the catalytic
converter to be overloaded and
create a fire hazard.

Maintenance
Operating precautions for cat-alytic converters (if equipped)Your vehicle is equipped with a cat-
alytic converter emission control
device.
Therefore, the following precautions
must be observed:
Do not operate the vehicle when there are signs of engine malfunc-
tion, such as misfire or a noticeable
loss of performance.
Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Examples of misuse arecoasting with the ignition off and
descending steep grades in gear
with the ignition off.
Do not operate the engine at high idle speed for extended periods (5
minutes or more).
Do not modify or tamper with any part of the engine or emission con-
trol system. We recommend that
the system be inspected by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Avoid driving with a extremely low fuel level. Running out of fuel
cause the engine to misfire, dam-
aging the catalytic converter. Failure to observe these precautionscould result in damage to the catalyt-
ic converter and to your vehicle.
Additionally, such actions could void
your warranties.
Fire
A hot exhaust system can
ignite flammable items under
your vehicle. Do not park,
idle, or drive the vehicle over
or near flammable objects,
such as dry grass, paper,
leaves, etc.
The exhaust system and cat-
alytic system are very hotwhile the engine is running or
immediately after the engine
is turned off. Keep away from
the exhaust system and cat-
alytic, you may get burned.
Also, do not remove the heat
sink around the exhaust sys-
tem, do not seal the bottom of
the vehicle or do not coat the
vehicle for corrosion control.
It may present a fire risk under
certain conditions.
