Record your key number
The key code num-
ber is stamped or
printed on the key
code tag attached
to the key set.
Should you lose your keys, this num-
ber will enable an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer to duplicate the
keys easily. Remove the key code
tag and store it in a safe place. Also,
record the key code number and
keep it in a safe place (not in the
vehicle).
Key operations
Used to start the engine, lock and
unlock the doors.
KEYS (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING - Ignition key
(smart key)
Leaving children unattended in a
vehicle with the ignition key
(smart key) is dangerous even if
the key is not in the ignition or
start button is ACC or ON posi-
tion. Children copy adults and
they could place the key in the
ignition or press the start button.
The ignition key (smart key)
would enable children to operate
power windows or other controls,
or even make the vehicle move,
which could result in serious
bodily injury or even death. Never
leave the keys in your vehicle
with unsupervised children,
when the engine is running.
CAUTION
Use only HYUNDAI original parts for the ignition key in yourvehicle. If an aftermarket key isused, the ignition switch maynot return to ON after START. Ifthis happens, the starter willcontinue to operate causingdamage to the starter motor andpossible fire due to excessivecurrent in the wiring.

Driving your vehicle
Starting the engine
1. Make sure the parking brake isapplied.
2. Manual Transaxle - Depress the
clutch pedal fully and shift the
transaxle into Neutral. Keep the
clutch pedal and brake pedal
depressed while turning the igni-
tion switch to the start position.
The starter will not operate if the
clutch pedal is not fully depressed.
Automatic Transaxle - Place the
transaxle shift lever in P (Park).
Depress the brake pedal fully.
You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in the N(Neutral) position.
WARNING - Ignition
switch
Never turn the ignition switch to LOCK or ACC while the vehi-
cle is moving. This can result in
loss of directional control and
braking function, which could
cause an accident.
Before leaving the driver’s seat, always make sure the
shift lever is engaged in 1st
gear for the manual transaxle
or P (Park) for automatic
transaxle, set the parking
brake fully and shut the
engine off. Unexpected and
sudden vehicle movement
may occur if these precau-
tions are not taken.

Never reach for the ignitionswitch, or any other controls
through the steering wheel
while the vehicle is in motion.
The presence of your hand or
arm in this area could cause a
loss of vehicle control, an
accident and serious bodily
injury or death.
Do not place any movable objects around the driver’s
seat as they may move while
driving, interfere with the driv-
er and lead to an accident.
WARNING
Always wear appropriate shoes
when operating your vehicle.
Unsuitable shoes (high heels,
ski boots,etc.) may interfere
with your ability to use the
brake, accelerator pedal, and
clutch (if equipped).

3.Turn the ignition switch to STARTand hold it there until the engine
starts (a maximum of 10 seconds),
then release the key.
It should be started withoutdepressing the accelerator.
4.Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle remains sta-
tionary.
Start driving at moderate engine
speeds. (Steep accelerating and
decelerating should be avoided.)
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while thevehicle is in motion, do notattempt to move the shift leverto the P (Park) position. If trafficand road conditions permit, youmay put the shift lever in the N(Neutral) position while thevehicle is still moving and turnthe ignition switch to the STARTposition in an attempt to restartthe engine.
CAUTION
Do not engage the starter formore than 10 seconds. If theengine stalls or fails to start,wait 5 to 10 seconds before re-engaging the starter. Improperuse of the starter may damage it.

What to do in an emergency

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
If engine doesn't turn over or
turns over slowly
1. If your vehicle has an automatictransaxle, be sure the shift lever is
in N (Neutral) or P (Park) and the
emergency brake is set.
2. Check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight.
3. Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you oper-
ate the starter, the battery is dis-
charged.
4. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See instructions for "Jump
starting".
If engine turns over normally
but does not start
1. Check fuel level.
2. With the ignition switch in the LOCKposition, check all connectors at
ignition coils and spark plugs.
Reconnect any that may be discon-
nected or loose.
3. If the engine still does not start, call an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or
seek other qualified assistance.
WARNING
If the engine will not start, do
not push or pull the vehicle to
start it. This could result in a
collision or cause other dam-
age. In addition, push or pull
starting may cause the catalytic
converter to be overloaded and
create a fire hazard.

What to do in an emergency
TPMS (Tire Pressure
Monitoring System)
malfunction indicator
The TPMS malfunction indicator will
illuminate after it blinks for approxi-
mately one minute when there is a
problem with the Tire Pressure
Monitoring System. If the system is
able to correctly detect an under
inflation warning at the same time as
system failure then it will illuminate
the TPMS malfunction indicator.
Have the system checked by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon
as possible to determine the cause
of the problem.
WARNING - Low pressure
damage
Significantly low tire pressure
makes the vehicle unstable and
can contribute to loss of vehicle
control and increased braking
distances.
Continued driving on low pres-
sure tires can cause the tires to
overheat and fail.
(Continued) When you drive your vehiclefrom a warm area to a cold areaor from a cold area to a warmarea, or the outside temperatureis higher or lower, you shouldcheck the tire inflation pressureand adjust the tires to the rec-ommended cold tire inflationpressure.CAUTION
The TPMS malfunction indica- tor may be illuminated if thevehicle is moving around elec-tric power supply cables orradios transmitter such as atpolice stations, governmentpublic offices, broadcastingstations, military installations,airports, or transmitting tow-ers, etc. This can interfere withnormal operation of the TirePressure Monitoring System(TPMS).
The TPMS malfunction indica- tor may illuminate if snowchains or some separatelypurchased devices such asnotebook computers, mobilecharger, remote starter, navi-gation etc. are used in thevehicle. This can interfere withnormal operation of the TirePressure Monitoring System(TPMS).
