FUEL QUALITY
Choosing the Right Fuel
Use only UNLEADED gasoline or
UNLEADED gasoline blended with a
maximum of 15% ethanol in your gasoline
vehicle. Flex fuel vehicles have a yellow
fuel fill cap or the fuel fill inlet will have a
yellow housing or bezel.
Do not use:
•
Fuel containing more than 15% ethanol
or E-85 fuel.
• Fuel with methanol.
• Fuels containing metallic based
additives, including manganese-based
compounds.
• Fuels containing the octane booster
additive, methylcyclopentadienyl
manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
• Leaded fuel (The use of leaded fuel is
prohibited by law).
Note: Use of any fuel other than
recommended fuel can cause powertrain
damage, impair the emission control system
or cause loss of vehicle performance. Any
damage to vehicle that is caused by use of
fuel not recommended will not be covered
under warranty.
Octane Recommendations Do not be concerned if your engine
sometimes knocks lightly. However, if it
knocks heavily under most driving
conditions while you are using fuel with the
recommended octane rating, see your
authorized dealer to prevent any engine
damage.
2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 Engines
We recommend regular unleaded gasoline
with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some stations offer fuels posted as regular
with an octane rating below 87, particularly
in high altitude areas. We do not
recommend fuels with an octane rating
below 87.
To provide improved performance, we
recommend premium fuel for severe duty
usage, such as trailer tow.
3.7L V6 Engines
We recommend regular unleaded gasoline
with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some stations offer fuels posted as regular
with an octane rating below 87, particularly
in high altitude areas. We do not
recommend fuels with an octane rating
below 87.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Avoid running out of fuel. This situation
may have an adverse effect on powertrain
components.
If you have run out of fuel:

* For complete refill of limited slip Ford axles, add 3.28 oz. (97 ml) of Additive Friction
Modifier XL-3 or equivalent meeting Ford Specification EST-M2C118-A. Ford rear axles
contain a synthetic lubricant that does not require changing unless you submerge the
axle in water.
If you use oil and fluids that do not meet
the defined specification and viscosity
grade, this may lead to:
• Component damage which is not
covered by the vehicle warranty.
• Longer engine cranking periods.
• Increased emission levels.
• Reduced engine performance.
• Reduced fuel economy.
• Degraded brake performance.
We recommend Motorcraft motor oil for
your vehicle. If Motorcraft oil is not
available, use motor oils of the
recommended viscosity grade that meet
API SN requirements and display the API
Certification Mark for gasoline engines. Do
not use oil labeled with API SN service
category unless the label also displays the
API certification mark. An oil with this trademark symbol
conforms to current engine, emission
system protection standards and fuel
economy requirements of the International
Lubricant Standardization and Approval
Council (ILSAC), comprised of U.S. and
Japanese automobile manufacturers.
Do not use supplemental engine oil
additives because they are unnecessary
and could lead to engine damage that may
not be covered by your vehicle warranty.
