M (Manual)
With the gearshift lever in manual (M), thedriver can change gears up or down asdesired. By moving the gearshift lever fromdrive position drive (D) to manual (M) younow have control of selecting the gear youdesire using buttons on the shift lever. SeeUnderstanding your SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission later in thissection.
To return to normal drive (D) position,move the shift lever back from manual (M)to drive (D).
The transmission operates in gears onethrough six.
Second (2)
Transmission operates in second (2) gearonly. Use second (2) gear to start-up onslippery roads.
First (1)
•Transmission operates in first (1) gearonly.
•Provides maximum engine braking.
•Allows upshifts by moving gearshiftlever.
•Does not downshift into first (1) gearat high speeds; allows for first (1) gearwhen vehicle reaches slower speeds.
Forced downshifts
•Allowed in drive (D) with the tow/haulfeature on or off.
•Press the accelerator to the floor.
•Allows transmission to select anappropriate gear.
Tow/Haul Mode
To activate tow/haul, press thebutton on the gearshift leveronce. The TOW HAUL indicatorlight illuminates in the instrument cluster.
The tow/haul feature:
•Delays upshifts to reduce the frequencyof transmission shifting.
•Provides engine braking in all forwardgears, which slows your vehicle andassists you in controlling your vehiclewhen descending a grade.
•Depending on driving conditions andload conditions, may downshift thetransmission, slow your vehicle andcontrol your vehicle speed whendescending a hill, without pressing theaccelerator pedal. The amount ofdownshift braking provided will varybased upon the amount you press thebrake pedal.
The tow/haul feature improvestransmission operation when towing atrailer or a heavy load. All transmissiongear ranges are available when usingtow/haul.
To deactivate the tow/haul feature andreturn to normal driving mode, press thebutton on the gearshift lever twice. TheTOW HAUL light deactivates. Tow/haulalso deactivates when you power downyour vehicle.
WARNING
Do not use the tow/haul featurewhen driving in icy or slipperyconditions as the increased enginebraking can cause the rear wheels to slideand your vehicle to swing around with thepossible loss of vehicle control.

Understanding your SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission (If Equipped)
Your vehicle is equipped with a SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission gearshift lever.The SelectShift Automatic transmissiongives you the ability to change gears up ordown (without a clutch) as desired.
In order to prevent the engine from runningat too low an RPM, which may cause it tostall, SelectShift will still automaticallymake some downshifts if it has determinedthat you have not downshifted in time.Although SelectShift will make somedownshifts for you, it will still allow you todownshift at any time as long as theSelectShift determines that damage willnot be caused to the engine fromover-revving.
SelectShift will not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit. It must be shifted manually bypressing the + button.
Note:Engine damage may occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.
The SelectShift Automatic transmissionfeature has two modes: PRS and M mode.
PRS (Progressive Range Selection)
Progressive Range Selection gives you theability to lockout gears from the automaticshifting range. This may provide you withan improved driving experience (forexample, in slippery conditions or whenexperiencing a steep grade).
With the gearshift lever in drive (D), pressthe – button to active PRS. The availableand selected gears are indicated on theinstrument cluster.
All available gears will display with thecurrent gear indicated. Press the – buttonagain to lock out gears beginning with thehighest gear. Example: press the – buttontwice to lock out 6th and 5th gears. Onlythe available gears will display and thetransmission will automatically shiftbetween the available gears. Press the +button to unlock gears to allow thetransmission to shift to higher gears. Thetransmission will shift automatically withinthe gear range you select.
Manual (M)
Moving the gearshift lever to the manual(M) position will allow you to manuallyselect the gear you desire. Only the currentgear will display. Use the buttons on thegearshift lever to manually select gears.Press the + button to upshift or the –button to downshift. Return thetransmission to a different gearshiftposition to deactivate manual control.

On some four-wheel drive vehicles, whenthe transfer case is in the N (Neutral)position, the engine and transmission aredisconnected from the rest of the driveline.Therefore, the vehicle is free to roll even ifthe automatic transmission is in P (Park)or the manual transmission is in gear. Donot leave the vehicle unattended with thetransfer case in the N (Neutral) position.Always set the parking brake fully and turnoff the ignition when leaving the vehicle.
Maintenance and Modifications
The suspension and steering systems onyour vehicle have been designed andtested to provide predictable performancewhether loaded or empty. For this reason,we strongly recommend that you do notmake modifications such as adding orremoving parts (i.e. lift kits or stabilizerbars) or by using replacement parts notequivalent to the original factoryequipment.
We recommend that you use caution whenyour vehicle has either a high load or device(i.e. ladder or luggage racks). Anymodifications to your vehicle that raise thecenter of gravity may cause your vehicleto roll over when there is a loss of vehiclecontrol.
Failure to maintain your vehicle correctlymay void the warranty, increase your repaircost, reduce vehicle performance andoperational capabilities and adverselyaffect you and your passenger's safety. Werecommend you frequently inspect yourvehicle's chassis components when yourvehicle is subject to off road usage.

Four-Wheel Drive (If Equipped)

2. If the sensors detect that your vehicleis on a slope, the system activatesautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle remains onthe slope without rolling away forabout two to three seconds. This holdtime automatically extends if you arein the process of driving off.
4. Drive off in the normal manner. Thesystem releases the brakesautomatically.
Note:When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal and press the pedal again whenthe system is active, you will experiencesignificantly reduced brake pedal travel. Thisis normal.
Switching the System On and Off
Vehicles with Manual Transmission
You can switch this feature on or off in theinformation display. The systemremembers the last setting when you startyour vehicle.
Vehicles with Automatic Transmission
You cannot turn the system on or off.When you switch the ignition on, thesystem automatically turns on.

Brakes

The system detects certain objects whilethe transmission is in reverse (R):
•Your vehicle is moving toward astationary object at a speed of 3 mph(5 km/h) or less.
•Your vehicle is not moving, but amoving object is approaching the rearof your vehicle at a speed of 3 mph(5 km/h) or less.
•Your vehicle is moving at a speed ofless than 3 mph (5 km/h) and a movingobject is approaching the rear of yourvehicle at a speed of less than 3 mph(5 km/h).
REAR VIEW CAMERA (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
The rear view camera system is areverse aid supplement device thatstill requires the driver to use it inconjunction with the interior and exteriormirrors for maximum coverage.
Objects that are close to eithercorner of the bumper or under thebumper, might not be seen on thescreen due to the limited coverage of thecamera system.
Back up as slow as possible sincehigher speeds might limit yourreaction time to stop the vehicle.
Use caution when using the rearvideo camera and the tailgate is ajar.If the tailgate is ajar, the camera willbe out of position and the video image maybe incorrect. All guidelines will be removedwhen the tailgate is ajar.
Use caution when turning camerafeatures on or off while in reverse(R). Make sure your vehicle is notmoving.
WARNINGS
When manual zoom is enabled(Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3), the fullarea behind your vehicle will not beshown. Be aware of your surroundingswhen using the manual zoom feature.
The rear view camera system provides avideo image of the area behind yourvehicle.
During operation, lines appear in thedisplay which represent your vehicle’s pathand proximity to objects behind yourvehicle.
The camera is located on the tailgate.
Using the Rear View CameraSystem
The rear view camera system displayswhat is behind your vehicle when you placethe transmission in reverse (R).

Fixed guidelines are always shown in thedisplay, but the active guidelines onlydisplay when the steering wheel is turned.To use active guidelines, turn the steeringwheel to point the guidelines toward anintended path. If the steering wheelposition is changed while reversing, thevehicle might deviate from the originalintended path.
The active guidelines fade in and outdepending on the steering wheel position.The active guidelines are not shown whenthe steering wheel position is straight.
Always use caution while reversing.Objects in the red zone are closest to yourvehicle and objects in the green zone arefarther away. Objects are getting closer toyour vehicle as they move from the greenzone to the yellow or red zones. Use theside view mirrors and rear view mirror toget better coverage on both sides and rearof your vehicle.
Enhanced Park Aids
Note:Enhanced park aids is only availablewhen the transmission is in reverse (R).
Note:The reverse sensing system is noteffective at speeds above 3 mph (5 km/h)and may not detect certain angular ormoving objects.
The system uses red, yellow and greenhighlights which appear on top of the videoimage when an object is detected by thereverse sensing system. The alert highlightsthe closest object detected. The reversesensing alert can be disabled and if visualpark aid alert is enabled, highlighted areasare still displayed.
Selectable settings for this feature are ONand OFF.
Manual Zoom
WARNING
When manual zoom is on, the fullarea behind your vehicle is notshown. Be aware of yoursurroundings when using the manual zoomfeature.
Note:Manual zoom is only available whenthe transmission is in reverse (R).
Note:When manual zoom is enabled, onlythe centerline is shown.
This feature allows you to get a closer viewof an object behind your vehicle (forexample, a trailer). The zoomed imagekeeps the bumper in the image to providea reference. The zoom is only active whilethe transmission is in reverse (R). Whenthe transmission is shifted out of reverse(R), the feature automatically turns offand must be reset when it is used again.
Selectable settings for this feature is OFF,Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. The selectedlevel will appear between the buttons (forexample, Level 1) The default setting forthe manual zoom is OFF.
Rear Camera Delay
When shifting the transmission out ofreverse (R) and into any gear other thanpark (P), the camera image remains in thedisplay until your vehicle speed reaches5 mph (8 km/h). This occurs when the rearcamera delay feature is on or until a radiobutton is selected.
Selectable settings for this feature are ONand OFF. The default setting for the rearcamera delay is ON.

TOWING A TRAILER
WARNINGS
Do not exceed the GVWR orthe GAWR specified on thecertification label.
Towing trailers beyond themaximum recommendedgross trailer weight exceeds thelimit of the vehicle and couldresult in engine damage,transmission damage, structuraldamage, loss of vehicle control,vehicle rollover and personalinjury.
Your vehicle may have electricalitems, such as fuses or relays,related to towing. See the Fuseschapter.
Your vehicle's load capacitydesignation is by weight, not byvolume, so you cannot necessarilyuse all available space whenloading a vehicle or trailer.
Towing a trailer places an extraload on your vehicle's engine,transmission, axle, brakes, tiresand suspension. Inspect thesecomponents periodically during,and after, any towing operation.
Load Placement
To help minimize how trailermovement affects your vehiclewhen driving:
•Load the heaviest items closestto the trailer floor.
•Load the heaviest itemscentered between the left andright side trailer tires.
•Load the heaviest items abovethe trailer axles or just slightlyforward toward the trailertongue. Do not allow the finaltrailer tongue weight to goabove or below 10-15% of theloaded trailer weight.
•Select a tow bar with thecorrect rise or drop. When boththe loaded vehicle and trailerare connected, the trailer frameshould be level, or slightlyangled down toward yourvehicle, when viewed from theside.
When driving with a trailer orpayload, a slight takeoff vibrationor shudder may be present due tothe increased payload weight.Additional information regardingproper trailer loading and settingyour vehicle up for towing islocated in another chapter of thismanual. See Load Limit (page185).

Towing

TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE
If you need to have your vehicle towed,contact a professional towing service or,if you are a member of a roadsideassistance program, your roadsideassistance service provider.
We recommend the use of a wheel lift anddollies or flatbed equipment to tow yourvehicle. Do not tow with a slingbelt. FordMotor Company has not approved aslingbelt towing procedure. Vehicledamage may occur if towed incorrectly, orby any other means.
Ford Motor Company produces a towingmanual for all authorized tow truckoperators. Have your tow truck operatorrefer to this manual for proper hook-upand towing procedures for your vehicle.
It is acceptable to have your two-wheeldrive vehicle towed with the front wheelson the ground (without dollies) and therear wheels off the ground.
We recommend towing a four-wheel drivevehicle with all wheels off the ground, suchas using a wheel lift and dollies or flatbedequipment. However, it is acceptable touse a wheel lift to raise the rear of yourvehicle so long as, depending on vehicleconfiguration, you perform the followingbefore towing:
•If your vehicle is equipped with amanual-shift transfer case, make surethe front wheel hub locks are in theFREE position before towing.
•If your vehicle is equipped with anelectronic shift-on-the-fly transfercase, make sure you turn thefour-wheel drive control to the 2Hposition before towing.
Note:Towing an electronic shift-on-the-flyfour-wheel drive vehicle with the frontwheels on the ground without disengagingthe front hubs may cause damage to theautomatic transmission.
Note:Towing a two-wheel drive vehicle oran electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheeldrive vehicle with the rear wheels on theground for more than 50 miles (80 km) orfaster than 35 mph (56 km/h) may causedamage to the automatic transmission.
Note:Using wheel lift equipment to tow adual rear wheel vehicle requires removingan outer rear wheel before towing.
