
4. Remove the fuel filler nozzle and fullyclose the fuel tank filler door.
Note:A fuel spillage concern may occur ifoverfilling the fuel tank. Do not overfill thetank. The fill pipe is equipped with a drainhole. Excess fuel due to overfill may drainthrough the drain hole and drip onto theground.
If the fuel fill inlet was not properly closed,a service engine warning lamp may appearon the instrument cluster.
At the next opportunity, do the following:
1. Stop your vehicle as soon as safelypossible and shift the transmission intopark (P).
2. Switch the ignition off.
3. Open the fuel filler door and removeany visible debris from the fuel fillopening.
4. Insert either the fuel fill nozzle or thefuel fill funnel provided with the vehicleseveral times to allow the inlet to closeproperly. This will dislodge any debrispreventing the inlet from sealing.
If this action corrects the problem, themessage may not reset immediately. Itmay take several driving cycles for themessage to turn off. A driving cycleconsists of an engine start-up (after 4 ormore hours with the engine off) followedby city or highway driving. Continuing todrive with the message on may cause theservice engine soon lamp to turn on aswell.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
Empty reserve is the amount of fuelremaining in the tank after the fuel gaugeindicates empty. The amount of usablefuel in the empty reserve varies and shouldnot be relied upon to increase driving range.
•The usable capacity of the fuel tank isthe amount of fuel that can be addedinto the tank after the gauge indicatesempty
•The advertised capacity is the total fueltank size. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 303). It is thecombined usable capacity plus theempty reserve.
•Due to the empty reserve, you may notbe able to refuel the full amount of theadvertised capacity of the fuel tankeven when the fuel gauge reads empty.
Filling the Tank
For consistent results when refueling:
•Turn the ignition off before fueling; aninaccurate reading results if the engineis left running.
•Use the same fill rate(low-medium-high) each time the tankis filled.
•Allow no more than two automaticclick-offs when filling.
Results are most accurate when the fillingmethod is consistent.

Calculating Fuel Economy
Do not measure fuel economy during thefirst 1,000 mi (1,600 km) of driving (this isyour engine’s break-in period). A moreaccurate measurement is obtained after2,000 mi (3,200 km) to 3,000 mi(4,800 km). Also, fuel expense, frequencyof fill ups or fuel gauge readings are notaccurate ways to measure fuel economy.
1.Fill the fuel tank completely and recordthe initial odometer reading.
2. Each time you fill the fuel tank, recordthe amount of fuel added.
3. After at least three fill ups, fill the fueltank and record the current odometerreading.
4. Subtract your initial odometer readingfrom the current odometer reading.
To calculate L/100 km (liters per 100kilometers) fuel consumption, multiply theliters used by 100, then divide by kilometerstraveled. To calculate MPG (miles pergallon) fuel consumption, divide milestraveled by gallons used.
Keep a record for at least one month andrecord the type of driving (city or highway).This provides an accurate estimate of yourvehicle’s fuel economy under currentdriving conditions. Keeping records duringsummer and winter will show howtemperature impacts fuel economy.
Conditions
•Heavily loading your vehicle reducesfuel economy.
•Carrying unnecessary weight in yourvehicle may reduce fuel economy.
•Adding certain accessories to yourvehicle such as bug deflectors, rollbarsor light bars, running boards and skiracks may reduce fuel economy.
•Using fuel blended with alcohol maylower fuel economy.
•Fuel economy may decrease with lowertemperatures.
•Fuel economy may decrease whendriving short distances.
•You will get better fuel economy whendriving on flat terrain than when drivingon hilly terrain.
EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
WARNINGS
Do not park, idle, or drive your vehiclein dry grass or other dry ground cover.The emission system heats up theengine compartment and exhaust system,which can start a fire.
Exhaust leaks may result in entry ofharmful and potentially lethal fumesinto the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your dealer inspect yourvehicle immediately. Do not drive if yousmell exhaust fumes.
Your vehicle is equipped with variousemission control components and acatalytic converter that will enable yourvehicle to comply with applicable exhaustemission standards. To make sure that thecatalytic converter and other emissioncontrol components continue to workproperly:
•Use only the specified fuel listed.
•Avoid running out of fuel.
•Do not turn off the ignition while yourvehicle is moving, especially at highspeeds.
•Have the items listed in scheduledmaintenance information performedaccording to the specified schedule.
The scheduled maintenance items listedin scheduled maintenance information areessential to the life and performance ofyour vehicle and to its emissions system.

Readiness forInspection/Maintenance (I/M)Testing
Some state/provincial and localgovernments may haveInspection/Maintenance (I/M) programsto inspect the emission control equipmenton your vehicle. Failure to pass thisinspection could prevent you from gettinga vehicle registration.
If the service engine soonindicator is on or the bulb doesnot work, you may need to havethe vehicle serviced. See On-BoardDiagnostics (OBD-II).
Your vehicle may not pass the I/M test ifthe service engine soon indicator is on ornot working properly (bulb is burned out),or if the OBD-II system has determinedthat some of the emission control systemshave not been properly checked. In thiscase, your vehicle is not ready for I/Mtesting.
If the vehicle’s engine or transmission hasjust been serviced, or the battery hasrecently run down or been replaced, theOBD-II system may indicate that thevehicle is not ready for I/M testing. Todetermine if the vehicle is ready for I/Mtesting, turn the ignition key to the onposition for 15 seconds without crankingthe engine. If the service engine soonindicator blinks eight times, it means thatthe vehicle is not ready for I/M testing; ifthe service engine soon indicator stays onsolid, it means that the vehicle is ready forI/M testing.
The OBD-II system monitors the emissioncontrol system during normal driving. Acomplete check may take several days. Ifthe vehicle is not ready for I/M testing, youmay need to perform the following drivingcycle consisting of mixed city and highwaydriving:
Drive on an expressway or highway for asteady 15 minutes, followed by 20 minutesof stop-and-go driving with at least four30-second idle periods.
Allow the vehicle to sit for at least eighthours without starting the engine. Then,start the engine and complete the abovedriving cycle. The engine must warm up toits normal operating temperature. Oncestarted, do not turn off the engine until theabove driving cycle is complete. If thevehicle is still not ready for I/M testing, youwill have to repeat the above driving cycle.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
WARNINGS
Always set the parking brake fullyand latch the gearshift in park (P).Turn the ignition to the off positionand remove the key whenever you leaveyour vehicle.
Do not use the tow/haul featurewhen driving in icy or slipperyconditions as the increased enginebraking can cause the rear wheels to slideand your vehicle to swing around with thepossible loss of vehicle control.
Selector Lever Positions
Column shift transmission:

Putting your vehicle in or out of gear:
1. Fully press down the brake pedal.
2. Move the gearshift lever into thedesired gear.
3. Come to a complete stop.
4. Move the gearshift lever and securelylatch it in park (P).
Park (P)
This position locks the transmission andprevents the rear wheels from turning.
Reverse (R)
With the gearshift lever in reverse (R), yourvehicle will move backward. Always cometo a complete stop before shifting into andout of reverse (R).
Neutral (N)
With the gearshift lever in neutral (N), yourvehicle can be started and is free to roll.Hold the brake pedal down while in thisposition.
Drive (D)
Drive (D) is the normal driving position forthe best fuel economy. The overdrivefunction allows automatic upshifts anddownshifts through gears one through six.
Manual (M)
With the gearshift lever in manual (M), youcan change gears up or down as desiredby using buttons on the shift lever. SeeUnderstanding your SelectShiftAutomatic™ transmission later in thissection.
Third (3) (Column Shifter Only)
Transmission operates in third (3) gearonly. Use third (3) gear for improvedtraction on slippery roads.

Brake-Shift Interlock
WARNINGS
Do not drive your vehicle until youverify that the brake lamps areworking.
When doing this procedure, you willbe taking your vehicle out of park (P)which means your vehicle can rollfreely. To avoid unwanted vehiclemovement, always fully set the parkingbrake prior to doing this procedure. Usewheel chocks if appropriate.
If you fully release the parking brakeand the brake warning lamp remainsilluminated, the brakes may not beworking properly. See your authorizeddealer.
Your vehicle is equipped with a brake-shiftinterlock feature that prevents moving thegearshift lever from park (P) when theignition is in the on position and the brakepedal is not pressed.
If you cannot move the gearshift lever outof park (P) position with the ignition in theon position and the brake pedal pressed,a malfunction may have occurred. It ispossible that a fuse has blown or yourvehicle’s brake lamps are not operatingproperly. See Fuse Specification Chart(page 234).
If the fuse is not blown and the brakelamps are working properly, the followingprocedure will allow you to move thegearshift lever from park (P):
Column-shifter
1. Apply the parking brake. Turn theignition key to the off position, thenremove the key.
2. Move the steering column to the fulldown and full rearward position(toward the driver’s seat).
3. Remove the gearshift lever boot.
4. Place fingers into gearshift lever boothole and pull top half of shroud up andforward to separate it from the lowerhalf of the shroud. There is a hinge atthe forward edge of the top shroud.Roll the top half of the shroud upwardon the hinge point to clear the hazardflasher button, then pull straightrearward toward the driver’s seat toremove.
5. Remove the top half of the shroud.
6. Remove the three fasteners under thecolumn that secure the lower shroudhalf to the column.
7.Pull the lock lever into the full unlockedposition and remove the lower shroudcover by pulling the lever handlethrough the slot in the cover.

8. Apply the brake, pull the white diskthen move the shifter to neutral (N).
9. Start your vehicle.
Perform Steps 4 through 8 in reverse order,making sure to engage the hinge pivotsbetween the upper and lower halves of theshroud. Keep slight pressure in the forwarddirection as the halves rotate together.
Floor-shifter
1. Apply the parking brake. Turn theignition key to the off position, thenremove the key.
2. Starting at the rear of the trim panel,using a screwdriver (or similar tool),carefully pry up the trim panel from therear attachments and disconnect itfrom the console to expose the insideof the gearshift.
3. Locate the brake shift interlock leveron the passenger side of the shifterassembly.
4. Apply the brake pedal. Using ascrewdriver (or similar tool), press andhold the brake shift interlock leverwhile pulling the gearshift lever out ofpark (P) and into neutral (N).
5. Install the trim panel.
6.Apply the brake pedal, start the vehicle,and release the parking brake.
See your authorized dealer as soon as thisprocedure is used.
If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mudor Snow
Note:Do not rock your vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature ordamage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle for morethan a minute or damage to thetransmission and tires may occur, or theengine may overheat.
If your vehicle gets stuck in mud or snow,you may rock it out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.

In the event of an emergency stop, avoidskidding the tires and do not attempt anysharp steering wheel movements.
If your vehicle goes from one type ofsurface to another (i.e. from concrete togravel) there will be a change in the wayyour vehicle responds to a maneuver (i.e.steering, acceleration or braking).
Sand
When driving over sand, try to keep all fourwheels on the most solid area of the trail.Avoid reducing the tire pressures but shiftto a lower gear and drive steadily throughthe terrain. Apply the accelerator slowlyand avoid excessive wheel slip.
Avoid driving at excessive speeds, thiscauses vehicle momentum to work againstyou and your vehicle could become stuckto the point that assistance may berequired from another vehicle. Remember,you may be able to back out the way youcame if you proceed with caution.
Mud and Water
Note:Driving through deep water maydamage the vehicle.
If you must drive through high water, driveslowly. Traction or brake capability maybe limited.
When driving through water, determine thedepth and avoid water higher than thebottom of the hubs. If the ignition systemgets wet, your vehicle may stall.
Once through water, always try the brakes.Wet brakes do not stop your vehicle aseffectively as dry brakes. Drying can beimproved by applying light pressure to thebrake pedal while moving slowly.
Be cautious of sudden changes in vehiclespeed or direction when you are driving inmud. Even 4WD vehicles can lose tractionin slick mud. As when you are driving oversand, apply the accelerator slowly andavoid spinning your wheels. If the vehicledoes slide, steer in the direction of the slideuntil you regain control of the vehicle.
If the transmission, transfer case or frontaxle are submerged in water, their fluidsshould be checked and changed, ifnecessary.
If the front or rear axle is submerged inwater, the axle lubricant should bereplaced.
After driving through mud, clean off residuestuck to rotating driveshafts and tires.Excess mud stuck on tires and rotatingdriveshafts causes an imbalance thatcould damage drive components.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note:Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them. If thevehicle has continuous vibration or shudderin the steering wheel while braking, anauthorized dealer should check your vehicle.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the AlloyWheels (page 269).

Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedalbecomes stuck or entrapped, apply steadyand firm pressure to the brake pedal toslow the vehicle and reduce engine power.If you experience this condition, apply thebrakes and bring your vehicle to a safestop. Switch the engine off, move thetransmission to park (P) and apply theparking brake. Inspect the acceleratorpedal and the area around it for any itemsor debris that may be obstructing itsmovement. If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
Emergency Brake Assist
Emergency brake assist detects when youbrake heavily by measuring the rate atwhich you press the brake pedal. Itprovides maximum braking efficiency aslong as you press the pedal. Emergencybrake assist can reduce stopping distancesin critical situations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarilyilluminates when you switch theignition on. If the light does notilluminate during start up, remains on orflashes, the anti-lock braking system maybe disabled. Have the system checked byan authorized dealer. If the anti-lock brakesystem is disabled, normal braking is stilleffective.
If the brake warning lampilluminates with the parkingbrake released, have your brakesystem serviced immediately.
HINTS ON DRIVING WITH
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
Note:When the system is operating, thebrake pedal will pulse and may travelfurther. Maintain pressure on the brakepedal. You may also hear a noise from thesystem. This is normal.
The anti-lock braking system will noteliminate the risks when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.
•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
