Coolant temperature gauge
The coolant temperature gauger=> page 10,
Fig. 3@ only works when the ignition is switched
on. In order to avoid possible damage to the en
gine, please read the following notes for the dif
ferent temperature ranges.
Engine cold
If the LEDs are still in the left-hand range of the
display, this indicates that the engine has not yet
reached operating temperature. Avoid high en
gine speeds, full acceleration and heavy engine
loads.
Normal temperature
The LEDs will settle somewhere in the centre of
the display once the engine has reached operat
ing temperature. If the warning lamp. lights
up on the infotainment display, the coolant tem
perature is too high r=> page 14.

CAUTION
-Additional lights and other accessories in
front of the air inlet reduce the cooling ef
fect of the radiator. At high outside temper
atures and high engine loads, there is a risk
of the engine overheating.
- The front spoiler also ensures proper distri
bution of the cooling air when the vehicle is
moving. If the spoiler is damaged this can
reduce the cooling effect, which could cause
the engine to overheat. Obtain professional
assista nee.
i Note
Diesel engines are so efficient that they may
not reach their full operating temperature in
very cold weather. This is quite normal and no
cause for concern.
Fuel gauge
The gauge @only works when the ignition is
switched on. If there is less than 7 litres of fuel in
the tank, a red LED will light up and the indicator
lamp I]] will appear r=> page 18. The LED will
flash in red if the fuel level is very low.

Lamp has gone out.
• Coolant temperature: too high. Let engine
run with vehicle stationary
Let the engine cool down by running it at idling
speed for a few minutes until the warning Lamp
goes out.
- Do not drive on if the warning Lamp does not
disappear. Obtain professional assistance.
A WARNING
- Never open the bonnet if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment; there is a risk of being scal
ded. Wait until you can no Longer see or
hear escaping steam or coolant.
- The engine compartment of any motor vehi
cle is a dangerous place. Before carrying out
any work in the engine compartment, switch
off the engine and allow it to cool down.

in the engine compartment.
CD CAUTION
Do not drive on if the warning Lamp. Lights
up; otherwise there is a risk of engine dam

• Switch off engine. Oil pressure too low
Switch off the engine and do not drive on. Check

- If the engine oil Level is OK and the warning
Lamp is flashing, switch off the engine and do

CX) Trip
recorder/odometer
The trip recorder shows the distance that has
been travelled since it was last reset. It is used to
measure individual journeys.
The trip recorder can be reset to zero by pressing
the reset button lo.al ¢Fig. 12.
The odometer records the vehicle's total mileage.
Fault display
If there is a fault in the instruments, the letters
DEF appear in the trip recorder display. Have the
fault rectified as soon as possible.
On-board computer
You can call up the following information se

The single journey memory processes the infor
mation on a journey from the time the ignition is
Sport view Driver
information system
switched on until it is switched off. If the journey
is resumed within two hours after the ignition is
switched off, the new figures are automatically
included in the calculation.
Unlike the single journey memory, the total jour
ney memory is not erased automatically. In this
way, you can determine the period for which you
wish the on-board computer to supply driving in
formation.
Fuel consumption
The current fuel consumption can be shown in a
bar display. The average fuel consumption from
the single journey memory can also be displayed.
If the bar turns green, your vehicle is saving fuel
using one of the following functions:
- Recuperation: Electrical energy can be stored in
the vehicle battery (recuperation) if the vehicle
is travelling downhill or coasting in gear (over
run). In this case, the bar will move towards the
t:::3 symbol.
- Coasting mode* ¢ page 82.

Boost pressure display
The current boost level of the engine (that is the
current charge pressure) is indicated by a bar
which moves from left to right.
Engine oil temperature gauge
The display shows ---°Cat low engine oil temper
atures.
The engine has reached its operating tempera
ture in normal driving conditions when the oil
temperature is between 80 °C and 120 °C. If the
engine is running under increased load at high
ambient temperatures, the oil temperature may
increase above this value. This is no cause for
concern, provided that the indicator/warning
lamps. ¢page 14 orl! ¢page 18 in the dis
play do not start flashing.

- You can change the measurement units for
temperature or speed, etc. via the infotain
ment system.
- When the vehicle is stationary or travelling
at very low speeds, the temperature dis
played may be slightly higher than the ac
tual outside temperature as a result of the
heat radiated from the engine.

Driving
General notes
Running in
A new vehicle should be run in over a distance of
1,500 km. For the first 1,000 km the engine
speed should not exceed 2/3 of the maximum
permissible engine speed -do not use full throt
tle. From 1,000 to 1,500 km you can gradually
increase the engine rpm and road speed.
During its first few hours of running, the internal
friction in the engine is greater than later on
when all the moving parts have bedded down.
How the vehicle is driven for the first 1,500 km
also influences the engine quality. After this peri
od you should continue driving at moderate en
gine speeds, in particular when the engine is
cold. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the
engine and increases the potential mileage which
can be covered by the engine.
You should also avoid driving with the engine
speed too low. Change down to a lower gear
when the engine no longer runs "smoothly". Ex
cessively high engine speeds are prevented by an
automatic rev limiter.
Letting the engine warm up/cool down
Applies to: Sand RS models
You can reduce the amount of wear and tear on
your vehicle during a sporty driving session sim
ply by adopting a more restrained driving style
while the engine is warming up and cooling
down.
When the engine is cold, the engine speed is limi
ted so that the full range of engine power is not
available. Once the engine has reached operating
temperature, the rev Limit moves to a higher
range of engine speeds. In addition, the tyres will
not develop their full grip potential until they
have had a chance to warm up on the road.
Even though the engine continues to be cooled
after you switch it off, it is particularly important
to give it time to cool down before parking. The
engine, brakes, exhaust system and gearbox will

reach very high temperatures when you adopt
a sporty driving style. Before you park the vehi
cle, allow it to cool down to normal temperature
by driving at moderate engine speeds for several
miles.
Avoiding damage to the car
CD CAUTION
Take care not to damage low-mounted parts
of the car (such as the spoiler or exhaust sys
tem) on steep ramps, uneven road surfaces or
roadside kerbs, etc. This applies especially to
vehicles with low ground clearance and to all
vehicles when fully laden.
Driving through water on roads
Please note the following in order to prevent
damage to the vehicle when driving through wa
ter (e.g. on flooded roads):
- The water level must not be higher than the ve
hicle's underbody.
- Do not drive faster than walking pace.
A WARNING
After driving through water, mud, sludge,
etc., the braking effect can be delayed slightly
due to moisture on the discs and brake pads.
Applying the brakes carefully several times
will remove the moisture and restore the full
braking effect.
CD CAUTION
- Parts of the vehicle (e.g. engine, gearbox,
running gear or electrical components) can
be badly damaged when driving through
water.
- Always switch off the start/stop system*
¢ page 71 before driving through water.

Do NOT stop the vehicle, drive in reverse or
switch off the engine before you are out of
the water.
- Bear in mind that waves created by oncom
ing traffic could exceed the permissible
wading depth of your vehicle.
- Avoid driving through salt water (corrosion).
How to improve economy and minimise
pollution
Fuel economy, environmental impact and wear
on the engine, brakes and tyres depend largely
on the way you drive the vehicle. By adopting an
economical driving style and anticipating the
traffic situation ahead, you can reduce fuel con
sumption by 10-15%. The following section gives
you some tips on lessening the impact on the en
vironment and reducing your operating costs at
the same time.
Anticipate well in advance
A car uses most fuel when accelerating. If you an
ticipate hazards and speed changes well in ad
vance, you will need to brake less and thus accel
erate less. Wherever possible, let the car slow
down gradually with a gear engaged, for in
stance when you can see that the next traffic
lights are red.
Change gear early to save fuel
An effective way of saving fuel is to change up
quickly through the gears. Running the engine at
high rpm in the lower gears uses an unnecessary
amount of fuel. Press the accelerator slowly and
avoid using the "kick-down" feature.
Avoid driving at high speed
Avoid travelling at top speed. Fuel consumption,
exhaust emissions and noise levels all increase
very rapidly at higher speeds. Driving at moder
ate speeds will help to save fuel.
Do not let the engine idle for longer than
necessary
Engine idling periods are automatically reduced
on vehicles with start/stop system*. On vehicles
without start/stop system*, it is worthwhile
switching off the engine at level crossings, for in- Driving
stance, or at traffic lights with a long red phase.
The fuel saved after only 30 -40 seconds is
greater than the amount of fuel needed to re
start the engine.
The engine takes a very long time to warm up
when it is running at idling speed. Mechanical
wear and pollutant emissions are also especially
high during this initial warm-up phase. It is
therefore best to drive off immediately after
starting the engine. Avoid running the engine at
high speed.
Regular servicing
Regular servicing can establish a basis for good
fuel economy before you start driving. A well
serviced engine gives you the benefit of im
proved fuel efficiency as well as maximum relia
bility and an enhanced resale value.
A poorly maintained engine can consume up to
ten percent more fuel than necessary.
Check the oil level when filling the tank. Oil con
sumption depends to a great extent on the en
gine load and engine speed. It is quite normal
that the oil consumption of a new engine only
reaches its lowest level after a certain mileage.
This means that the oil consumption can only be
properly assessed after about 5,000 km.
Avoid short trips
The engine and emission control system need to
reach their proper working temperature in order
to minimise fuel consumption and emissions.
A cold engine uses disproportionately more fuel.
The engine only reaches its working temperature
after about four kilometres, when fuel consump
tion will return to a normal level.
Check tyre pressures
Always make sure the tyres are inflated to the
correct tyre pressures to save fuel. If the tyre
pressures are just 0.5 bar too low, this can in
crease the fuel consumption by as much as 5 %.
Due to the greater rolling resistance, under-infla
tion also increases tyre wear and impairs han
dling.

WARNING
You should switch on the sport mode or
switch off the ESC/traction control system
(ASR) only if your driving ability and the traf
fic conditions allow you to do so safely -dan
ger of skidding!
- The stabilising function is restricted when
sport mode is switched on. The driven
wheels may start to spin, causing the vehi
cle to lose grip, in particular on slippery or
wet roads.
- When the ESC/traction control system
(ASR) is switched off, the vehicle will not be
stabilised.
@ Note
- The ESC/traction control system (ASR) can
not be switched off and the sport mode can
not be switched on when the cruise control
system* is on.
- In the event of a malfunction in the rear
spoiler system or the Audi magnetic ride, it
may not be possible to switch off the ESC/
ASR or switch on the sport mode.
Brakes
New brake pads
New brake pads do not give full braking effect for
the first 400 km, they must first be "bedded in".
However, you can compensate for the slightly re
duced braking effect by applying more pressure
on the brake pedal. Avoid placing a heavy load on
the brakes during the running-in period.
Wear
The rate of wear on the brake pads depends a
great deal on how you drive and the conditions in
which the vehicle is operated. Negative factors
are, for instance, city traffic, frequent short trips
or hard driving with abrupt starts and stops.
Noises
Brake noise may develop in certain situations, de
pending on the speed, braking force and ambient
conditions (such as temperature and relative hu
midity). Intelligent
technology
Effect of moisture and salt
In certain conditions, such as in heavy rain, early
morning dew, or after washing the car or driving
through water, the full braking effect can be de
layed by moisture (or in winter by ice) on the
discs and brake pads. The brakes should be
"dried" by pressing the pedal to restore full brak
ing effect.
When you are driving at higher speeds with the
windscreen wipers on, the brake pads are very
briefly brought into contact with the brake discs.
This automatic process which goes unnoticed by
the driver is carried out at regular intervals and is
intended to improve braking response in wet con
ditions.
The effectiveness of the brakes can also be tem
porarily reduced if the car is driven for some dis
tance without using the brakes when there is a
lot of salt on the road in winter. The layer of salt
that accumulates on the discs and pads can be
removed with a few cautious brake applications.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up on
the brake pads and corrosion to form on the discs
if the car is used infrequently, or if you only drive
low mileages without using the brakes very
much.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if corro
sion has formed on the discs, it is advisable to
clean off the pads and discs by braking firmly a
few times from a moderately high speed ¢ A.
Faults in the brake system
If the brake pedal travel should ever increase
suddenly, this may mean that one of the two
brake circuits has failed. Drive immediately to the
nearest qualified workshop and have the fault
rectified. On the way to the dealer, be prepared
to use more pressure on the brake pedal and al
low for longer stopping distances.
Low brake fluid level
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if the
brake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid level
is monitored electronically.

A WARNING
When extending or retracting the rear spoiler,
please make sure that no persons or objects
are close to the moving spoiler -risk of injury!
CD CAUTION
- If you need to push the vehicle, never put
your weight on the rear spoiler -Risk of
damage!
- To avoid damage to the rear spoiler, you
should not lean on it or apply any other type
of pressure.
- Do not operate the rear spoiler manually
when the boot lid is open or any moving
parts of the automatic rear spoiler are ob
structed -risk of damage!
Note
Clean the rear spoiler housing every 2 to 3
months. The rear spoiler housing must be
free of ice, snow and leaves in order to oper
ate correctly.
Power management
This system helps to ensure reliable
starting
The power management controls the distribu
tion of electrical energy and thus helps to ensure
that there is always enough power available to
start the engine.
If a vehicle with a conventional electrical system
is left parked for a long time, the vehicle battery
will gradually lose its charge because certain
electrical equipment (such as the immobiliser)
continues to draw current even when the ignition
is off. In some cases there may not be enough
power available to start the engine.
Your vehicle is equipped with an intelligent pow
er management system to control the distribu
tion of electrical energy. This significantly im
proves reliability when starting the engine, and
also prolongs the life of the vehicle battery.
The main functions incorporated in the power
management system are battery diagnosis, re-

current management and dynamic power
management.
Battery diagnosis
The battery diagnosis function constantly regis
ters the condition of the vehicle battery. Sensors
detect the battery voltage, battery current and
battery temperature. This enables the system to
calculate the current power level and charge con
dition of the vehicle battery.
Residu al current management
The residual current management reduces power
consumption while the vehicle is parked. It con
trols the supply of power to the various electrical
components while the ignition is switched off.
The system takes the battery diagnosis data into
consideration.
Depending on the power level of the vehicle bat
tery, the individual electrical components are
switched off one after the other to prevent the
vehicle battery from losing too much charge and
to ensure that the engine can be started reliably.
Dynamic power management
While the vehicle is moving, this function distrib
utes the available power to the various electrical
components and systems according to their re
quirements. It ensures that on-board systems do
not consume more electrical power than is being
generated, and thus maintains the maximum
possible vehicle battery power level.

the vehicle battery are limited.

the starting ability may be impaired.
Points to remember
Starting ability has first priority.
Short trips, city traffic and low temperatures all
place a heavy load on the vehicle battery. In
these conditions a large amount of power is
