The LE D @ info rms you of the remote control key
function.
•If you press a button quick ly, the LED blinks
once .
• If you press a button longer (convenience open­
ing/ closing), the LED blinks several times.
•If the LED does not blink, the remote control
key battery is dead . The Ill indicator light and
the message Remote control key: change key
battery appear. Replace the battery.
Replacing the remote control key battery
• Press the release buttons@ ¢ fig. 16 and re­
move the mechanical key.
.. Press the release buttons© ¢ fig. 17 on the
battery holder and, at the same time, pull the
battery holder out of the remote contro l key in
the direction of the arrow .
.. Insert the new battery with the"+ " facing
down .
.. Push the battery holder carefully into the mas­
ter key.
~ •Install the mechanical key . .....
Opening and closing
@) For the sake of the environment
Dead batteries must be disposed of using
methods that will not harm the environment.
Do not dispose of them in household trash.
@Tips
The replacement battery must meet the same
specificat ions as th e origina l battery.
Unlocking/locking by remote control

.. To unlock the vehicle , press the Im button

.. To open the luggage compartment lid, press
the~ button .
.. To trigger the alarm, press the red I PANIC I but­
ton. The vehicle horn and emergency flashers
turn on.
•To switch off the alarm, press the red I PANIC I
button again .
If the vehicle is unlocked and none of the doors,
the rear lid or hood are opened within 45 sec­
onds,
the veh icle locks again automatically. This
f
eature prevents the vehicle from being acciden­
tally
left un locked over a long period of time.
T
he setti ngs in the Infota inment system deter­
mine if the entire vehicle or only the driver's door
is un locked when un locking the vehicle
¢page 29.

No one, especially children, should stay in the
vehicle when it is locked from the outside, be­
cause the windows are no longer able to open

-Only use the remote control key when you
are within view
of the vehicle.

Do not use the remote control when you are
i nside
the vehicle. Otherwise, you could un­
intentionally lock the vehicle. If you then
tried
to start the eng ine or open a door, the
alarm would be triggered. If this happens,
press
the u nlock button 0 .
- The selector lever must be in the P position
on veh icles with a convenience
key*. Other­
wise the ve hicle will not be able to lock .

Only use the panic functio n in an emergen­
cy.

convenience key

You can unlock/ lock th e veh icle at every door.
The remote control
key cannot be more than ap­
proximately 5
ft (1.5 m) away from the door han­
dle.
It makes no difference whether the master
key is in your jacket pocket or in your briefcase.
If you grip the door handle
while locking, this can
adverse ly affect
the locking function.
The door canno t be opened for a b rief period d

rectly after locking it. This way you have the op­
po rtunity to check if
the doors locked correct ly .

(!) Tips
If your vehicle is left standing for a lo ng peri ­
od
of t ime, note the following:
- T he proxim ity sensor switches off a
fter a
few days to save ener
gy. You then have to
pull once on
the door handle to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open it.
- To prevent
the battery from draining and to
maintain the ability of the vehicle to start
for as long as poss ible, the energy manage­
ment system gradually turns off unnecessa­
ry convenience functions . You may not be
able
to unlock your vehicle using the con­
venience key.
-

If the central locking system malfunctions, you
must unlock/lock the doors separately using the
mechanical key.
Unlocking /locking the driv er's door with the
mechanical key
•Remove the mechan ical key ¢ page 26.
•To unlock the d river's door, turn the key to the
open position @¢fig. 21.
•To lock the driver's door, move the selector lev­
er to the P position (automatic transmission)
and tur n the key once to the close position@ .
Locking the front passenger's door with the
mechanical key
The emergency release is located on the edge of
the front passenger's door. It is only visible when
the door is open.
• Remove the mechan ica l key¢ page 26.
•Pull the cap out of the opening i::::> fig. 22.
•Insert the key into the slot inside and turn it all
the way to the right (right door) or to the left
(left door*).

Once the front passenger's door is closed, it is no
l
onger possible to open it from the outside. The
door can be opened from the inside by pulling
the door handle.
Anti-theft alarm system
If the anti-theft alarm system detects a vehicle
break-in, audio and visual warning signals are
triggered. The anti-theft alarm system is activat­
ed when the vehicle is locked as usual. It is
switched off when unlock ing.

-The auxiliary radiator fan switches on auto­
matically when the engine coolant reaches a
certain temperature and will continue to run
until the coolant temperature drops.

Before you check anything in the engine compart­
ment, always read and heed all WARNINGS
¢page 236.
~ Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid
reservo ir ¢ fig. 188, ¢page 238, fig. 184. The
brake fluid level must be between the "MIN"
and "MAX" markings.
The location
of the brake fluid reservoir can be
seen in the engine compartment illustration
¢page238.
The fluid level may drop slightly after some time
due to the automatic adjustment of the brake
pads. This is not cause for alarm.
If the brake fluid level falls considerably below
the "MIN" mark, the brake warning/indicator
light .. (U.S. models) I. (Canadian models)
will come on ¢ page 11. Do not continue to oper­
ate the vehicle. The complete brake system
should be thoroughly checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified facility and the
cause corrected. Ifthe brake fluid level is too
low, the brake warning/indicator light will illumi­
nate. Contact an authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately.

Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experienced
technician .
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If the
water content in the brake fluid is too high, cor­
rosion in
the brake system may result after ape­
riod of time. The boiling point of the brake fluid
will
also decrease considerably and decrease
braking performance.
Therefore, the brake fluid must be changed every
two years. Always use new brake fluid which con­
forms to Federal Motor Vehicle Standard "FMVSS
116 DOT 4".
The brake fluid reservoir can be difficult to reach,
therefore, we recommend that you have the
brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi
dealer. Your dealer has the correct tools, the
right brake fluid and the know-how to do this for
you.
8._ WARNING
- Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored
only in the closed original container out of
the reach of children!
-Brake failure can result from old or inappro­
priate brake fluid. Observe these precau­
tions:
-Use only brake fluid that meets SAE speci­
fication
J 1703 and conforms to Federal
Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always check
with
your authorized Audi dealer to make
sure you are using the correct brake fluid.
The
correct type of brake f lui d is also ind i­
cated on the brake fluid reservoir .
- The
brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of
the brakes can cause a vapor lock if the
brake fluid is left in the system too long.
This
can seriously affect the efficiency of
the brakes as well as your safety. This
could
result in an accident.

A WARNING
Whenever working on the ba ttery or on the
electrical system, there is the risk of injury,
accident and even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing
WARNINGS:
- Always wear eye protection. Do not let bat­
tery acid or any lead particles get on your
skin or clothing . Shield your eyes. Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
-
Battery acid contains sul furic acid. Sulfuric
acid
can cause blindness and severe burns.
- Always
wear gloves and eye protection. Do
not tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilation openi ngs.
- If you
get battery acid in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with cold wa­
ter for several minutes and get medical at­
tention.
-
If you should ingest any battery acid, seek
medical attention immediately.
-
Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light.
-
Do not smoke.
-Do not interchange the positive and nega-
tive
cables.
-When working on the battery, be sure not to
short-circuit the terminals with tools or oth­
er metal objects. This would cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could
lead to damage or explosion and personal
injury.
-
When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause personal injury .
- Always keep
the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before work is
done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negative ground cable.
- Before
performing any work on the electri­
cal
system, switch off the engi ne and igni­
t i
on as well as any electrical equipment. The

negative cabl e on the battery m ust be dis­
connected. If you are just going to replace a
light bulb,
then it is enough to switch off
the lights.
- Before di
sconnecting the battery, switch off
the anti-theft alarm system! Otherwise you
w ill
set off the alarm.
-
When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negative cabl e and then the
positive cable.
- Before
reconnecting the battery, make sure
all electrical consumers are switched off.
Reconnect
the positive cable first and then
the negative cable. Never interchange the
cables -this could start a fire!
- Never
charge a frozen or a thawed-out bat­
tery. It cou ld explode! If a battery has fro ­
zen,
then i t must be replaced. A discharged
b attery can freeze ove r at 32 °F (O °C).
-Make sure the vent hose is always attached
to the opening on the side of the battery .
- Never
use batteries which are damaged.
There is th e danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a da maged battery .

-Do not disconnect the vehicle battery when
the ignition is on or when the engine is run­

otherwise, you will damage electronic
components in the e lectrical system.
-If your veh icle is going to stand for a long
period of time without being driven, protect
the battery from "freezing" , otherwise it
will be damaged and will then have to be re­
placed .
