Checking and Filling
-Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances . This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames . Fluids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher imme­
diately available .
- To avoid electrical shock and personal injury
while the engine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repair with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever to P (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V -belts or
other moving parts, or from contacting
hot parts. Tie back hair before starting,
and do not wear clothing that will hang or
droop into the engine.
- Minimize exposure to emission and chemi­
cal hazards

A hood that is not completely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving .
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en ­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driving that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close it .

Engine oil consumption
T he engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amoun t of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving par ts.
In order to p rovide effective lubr ication and cool­
ing of internal engine components, all interna l
combustion engines consume a cer tain amount
of oil. Oi l co nsumption varies from engine to en ­
g ine and may change significant ly over the life of
the eng ine . Typically, eng ines with a specified

b reak -in period (see q page 188) consume more
oi l during the break-in period than they consume
after o il consumption has stab ilized.
U nder normal cond itions, the ra te of oil con ­
s u mption depends on the q ua lity and viscos ity o f
the oil , the RPM (revo lutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the amb ient tem­
perature and road condit ions. Further facto rs a re
the amount of o il di lution from wate r condensa­
tion or fue l resid ue a nd the oxidation level of the
o il. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the o il consumption may increase ove r
ti me until replacement o f wo rn components may
become ne cessary.
With a ll these va riables coming into p lay, no
standard rate of o il consumption can be estab­
li sh ed or spec ified . T he re is no alte rnative to reg­
u lar and freq uen t che cki ng of the oil level , see
Note .

Checking the engine oil level
The engine oil level con be checked in the Info­
tainment system

Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and
the operating conditions, oil consumption can be
up to 1 quart per 600 miles (0.8 liter per 1,000
km) . Consumpt ion may be higher within the first
3,000 miles (5,000 km).
Because of this, the engine oil level must be
checked regularly . It would be best to check each
time you refuel your veh icle and before long
drives .
(D Tips
The oil level indicator in the instrument clus­
ter display is only an informational display. If
the oil level is too low, a minimum oil warn ing

appears in the instrument cluster. Add oil. If
the hood was opened, the current oil level is
shown in the instrument cluster the next t ime
the ignition is switched on.

temperatures significantly de­ crease the elasticity of summ­
er tires, which affects traction

temperatures, cracks can form
on the tread bars, resulting in permanent tire damage that
can cause loud driving noise
and unbalanced tires.
-Burnished, polished or chromed rims must not be used in winter driving condi­

sion protection for this and
could be permanently dam­
aged by road salt or similar
substances.

Bead
means the part of the tire that is
made of steel wires, wrapped or
reinforced by ply cords and that is
shaped to fit the rim.
Bead separation
means a breakdown of the bond
between components in the bead.
Cord
means the strands forming the
plies in the tire.
Cold tire inflation pressure
means the tir e pressure recom­
mended by the vehic le manufac­
turer for a tire of a designated
size that has not been driven for
more than a couple of miles (kilo­
meters) at low speeds in the
three hour period before the tire pressure is measured or adjusted .
Curb weight
means the weight of a motor ve ­
hicle with standard equipment in­
c luding the maximum capacity of
fuel, oi l, and coolant, a ir condi­
tioning and add itional weight of
optional equipment.

Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of
load or weight that any vehicle
and any tire can carry. A vehicle
that is overloaded will not handle
well and is more difficult to stop. Overloading can not only lead to
loss of vehicle control, but can al­
so damage important parts of the
vehicle and can lead to sudden
tire failure, including a blowout and sudden deflation that can
cause the vehicle to crash.
Your safety and that of your pas­ sengers also depends on making
sure that load limits are not ex­
ceeded . Vehicle load includes ev­
erybody and everything in and on

the vehicle. These load limits are
technically referred to as the vehi­
cle's
Gross Vehicle Weight Rat­
ing
("GVWR").
The "GVWR" includes the weight of the basic vehicle, all factory in­
stalled accessories , a full tank of
fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids
plus maximum load. The maxi­
mum load includes the number of
passengers that the vehicle is in­
tended to carry ("seating capaci­
ty") with an assumed weight of 150 lbs. (68 kg) for each passen­
ger at a designated seating posi­
tion and the total weight of any luggage in the vehicle. If you tow
a trailer, the weight of the trailer hitch and the tongue weight of
the loaded trailer must be includ­ ed as part of the vehicle load.

The effectiveness of winter tires is reduced great­
ly when the tread is worn down to a depth of
0 .1 57 inch (4 mm). The character istics of winter
tires a lso dec rease great ly as the tire ages, re­
ga rdless of the remaining tread.
_& WARNING
- Never drive faster than the maxim um per­
mitted speed for your tires. This cou ld cause
the tires to heat up too much . Th is increases
the risk of an accident because it can cause
the tire to burst.
- Always adapt your dr iv ing to the road and
traff ic conditions. Drive carefully and reduce
your speed on icy or slippery roads. Even
winter tires can lose traction on black ice.
@ For the sake of the environment
Reinstall summer ti res at the appropriate
time, because they provide better handling
when roads are free of snow and ice. Summer tires cause less road noise, t ire wear and fuel
consumption.
You ca n also use all season tires instead of
w inter t ires. Please note that in some coun­
tries where w inter t ires are required, only
w inter t ires with the

Snow chains
Snow chains improve traction in the snow .
,.. On ly install snow chains on the front wheels.
,.. Check and correct the seating of the snow
chains if necessary after driving a few feet. Fol­
low the instruct ions from the manufacturer.
,.. Note the maximum permitted speed when dr iv­
ing wit h snow chains. Do not exceed 30 mph
(SO km/h) .

braking.
Use of snow chains is only permitted with certa in
rim/tire comb inat ions due to technical reasons.
Check with an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facili ty to see if you may use
snow c ha ins.
You must remove the chains when driving on roads that are
free of snow . When roads are free
of snow, snow chai ns can impa ir handling and
damage the tires, and the chains will qu ic kl y be
dest royed.
_& WARNING ~
Using incorrect snow chains or ins tall ing snow
chains incorrect ly can resu lt in loss of veh icle
control, which increases the risk of a n acci­
dent.
(D Note
- Snow chains can damage the rims/wheel
covers* if the chains come into direct con ­
tact with them . Remove the wheel covers*
first. Use coated snow chains.
- Using snow c hains that add more than 0.4
inch ( 10.5 mm) of height can severely dam­
age the whee l housings and other vehicle
components.
- Do not insta ll and use snow chains if there is
a malfunction in the adapt ive a ir suspen­
sion*, because the vehicle he ight will be
very low. If you drive with snow chains any­
way, the wheel housings and other vehicle
components can be seve rely damaged.
