• Rea dy : The indicator light turns on when the
system is ready for use. The system can now be
operated .
Pl1 Not Read y: The indicator light turns on if the
system is switched on but is inoperable. Th is may
be due to the following reasons:
- There is no lane marker line.
- T he relevant lane marker lines are not detected
(for example, markings in a construction zone
or because they are obstructed by snow, dirt,
water or backlighting).
- The vehicle's speed is below the speed needed
to activate it, which is about 40 mph (65 km/
h).
-The lane is narrower than about 8 ft. (2.5 m) or
wider than 15 ft (4.5 m).
- The curve is too sharp.

If the active lane assist switches off automatical­
ly, the indicator light in the display turns off and
one of the following messages appears:
Audi active lane a ssist: Currently unavailable.
No camera view
This message appears if the came ra is unable to
detect the lines. This could happen if:
- The camera field of view ¢
page 89, fig. 98 is
dirty o r covered in ice. Clean this area on the
windshield.
- The camera field of v iew is fogged over . Wait
until the fog has cleared before switching the
active lane assist on again.
- T he system has been unable to detect the lanes
for an extended period of time due to road con­
ditions. Switch the active lane assist back on
when the lines are more vis ible.
Audi active lane assist: currently unavailable
There is a temporary active lane assist malfunc­
tion . Try sw itching the act ive lane assist on aga in
later.
Audi active lane assist: system fault!
Drive to an authorized Aud i dea ler or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected.
Audi active lane assist: Please take over steering
This message appears if you are not steering by
yourse lf. If th is is the case, active lane assist does
not switch off, but it is "not ready" to provide a
warn ing. The system can he lp you keep the vehi­
cle in the lane. However, you are responsib le for
driving the vehicle and must steer it yourself.

Side assist helps you monitor your blind spot and
traffic behind your vehicle . Within the limits of
the system , it warns you about vehicles that are
coming closer or that are traveling with you with­
in sensor range ©

The display in the left exterior mirror provides as­
sistance when making a lane change to the left,
while the d isplay in the right exterior mirror pro ­
vides assistance when making a lane change to

Information stage
As long as you do not activate the turn signal,
side assist
informs you about vehicles that are
detected and classified as critica l. The disp lay in
the mirror turns on, but is dim.
Audi side assist
The display remains dim in the information stage
so that your view toward the front is not distur­
bed.
Warning stage
If the display in a mirror bl inks brightly when you
act ivate a tu rn s ignal , sid e assist is
warning you
about detected vehicles that it has classified as
critical. If this happens, check traffic by glancing
in the rearview mirror and ove r you r shoulde r
c> .&. in General informa tion on page 92.
Applies to vehicles w ith active lane assist* : the
display in the mirror can also blink if you have not
activated a turn signal : if you a re approaching a
detected lane marker line and it appears you will
be leaving the lane , side assist will warn you
about detected vehicles that it has class ified as
critical.

(D Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faster a veh icle approaches ,
the sooner the display in the exterior mirror w il l
turn on.
@Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling with you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest .
@ Vehicles left behind
If you slow ly pass a vehicle that side assist has
de tected (the diffe rence in speed between the
vehicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph or 15
km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns on
as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar sensors are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width . In certa in situations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
thou gh there is no vehicle located in the area
that is crit ica l for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes a re narrow or if your are driving on
the edge of your lane . If this is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or displaced guard rai ls).
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar sensors <=?
fig. 104 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this wi ll affect the function. For in­
format ion on cleaning, refer to <=?
page 193.
_& WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your vehicle. Side assist cannot
replace a driver's attention . The driver alone
is always responsible for lane changes a nd
similar driving maneuvers .
- Improper reliance on the side ass ist system
can cause collis ions and serious pe rsonal in-

-Never rely only on side assist when chang­
ing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles under
all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates there
are approaching vehicles, or vehicles in your
blind spot, only after your vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at least 19 mph
(30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not function or its function may be limited. For
example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly. The display may not
turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as heavy
rain, snow or heavy mist.
- on very w ide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface. Vehicles
in the adjacent lane may not be detected
because they are outside of the sensor
range.

The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system. Have
your authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Serv ice Facility check their function .

Adjusting the display brightness
Applies to: vehicles wi th Audi side ass ist
The display brightness can be adjusted in the In­
fotainment system .

The display brightness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage. In very
dark or very bright surroundings, the d isplay is
al ready set to the minim um o r max imum level by
the automatic adjustment. In such cases, you
may not ice no change when adjusting the bright­
ness, or the change may only be noticeable once
the surroundings change.
Adjust the br igh tness to a level where the display
in the information stage will not disrupt your
view forward . If you change the brightness, the
display in the exterior mirror will briefly show the
brightness level in the information stage. The
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage adjustment .

If there are pedestrians or wild animals in an
area in front of you r vehicle that is classified as
critical, the system will direct your attention to
this :
- Pedestrians or wild animals are highlighted in
red and the corresponding symbol. or.

The area classified as critical is based on the vehi­
cle speed and the steering wheel angle. Pedes­
trian and wild animal warning encourages you to
pay more attention.
If the night vision assist image is replaced by an­
other display (such as the on-board computer),
the red indicator light . or. will appear if
there is a pedestrian or wild animal warning

If the head-up display* is switched on and the
night vision assist content is activated, . or.
will appear in the head-up display*.
Marking light*
To direct the driver's attention to a pedestrian,
the headlights can flash on the pedestrian three
times in a row when there is a pedestrian warn­
ing.
This happens at speeds above approximately
35 mph (60 km/h) when you are traveling out­
side of well-lit areas and when flashing the head­ lights will not create glare for a vehicle detected
in the oncoming lane . The marker light* is con­
trolled by the high beam assist*

Night vision assist
General information

The following situations may affect the function
of the night vision assist system:
- Poor visibility such as snow, rain, fog or heavy
spray
- Dirty lens on the night vision assist camera
Make sure the night vision assist camera

any other obstructions because that can affect
the camera function . For information on clean­
ing, refer to

Pedestrian and wild animal detection depends on
the difference in temperature between the per­
son/wild animal and the background area. Pedes­
trians/wild animals may not be detected if the difference is too small. Pedestrian and wild ani­
mal marking and the marker light* are deactivat­
ed at temperatures above approximately 77 °F
(25 °C) and when it is light outside . When the
night vision assistant image is selected in the in­
strument cluster display, the
II symbol appears
in the upper right.
A WARNING
Pay attention to traffic and the area around
your vehicle when night vision assist is switch­
ed on. The driver is always responsible for cor­
rectly assessing the traffic situation.
- Night vision assist can only warn about peo­
ple and wild animals located within the visu­
al range of the infrared camera. The visual
range corresponds to the image in the in­
strument cluster display .

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
E SC helps to imp rove ro ad hold ing and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probab ility of skid­
d ing and loss of veh icle control. It works only
when the engine is runn ing . ESC detects certain
d iffic ult dr iving situat io ns, including when the
ve hicl e is begin ning to spin (yaw) o ut of contro l
and h elps you to ge t the veh icle b ack u nde r con ­
trol by se lectively bra king the wheels, and/or re­
ducing engine powe r and providing steering as­
sistance to help hold the vehicle on the driver's
intended course. The indicator light
GI in the in­
strument cluster blinks when ESC is tak ing action
t o he lp you contro l the vehicle.
ESC has lim itations. It is important to remembe r
that ESC cannot overcome the laws o f physics. It
will not a lways be able to help out under all con­
d itions you may come up aga inst . For example,
ESC may not always be ab le to help you master
situations where there is a sudde n change in the
coeff ic ie nt of fr iction of the road surface. W hen
there is a se ction of dry roa d that is sudde nly cov­
e red with w ater, slush o r sn ow , ESC c annot pe r­
form the same way i t wou ld on the dry s urface. If
the vehicle hydrop lanes (rides on a cushion of wa­
ter instead of t he road su rface), ESC w ill not be
ab le to he lp you stee r the veh icle because contact
with the pavement has been inte rru pted and the
ve hicle cannot be b raked or steered . Dur ing fast
cor nering, part icu la rly on w inding roads, ESC
can not always deal as effect ive ly w it h difficult
d riving situat ions than a t lowe r speeds .
Always ad just yo ur speed and driving sty le to
road, traffic and weath er cond itions . ESC canno t
over ride the vehicle's phys ical lim its, increase the
ava ilab le traction, o r keep a ve hicle on t he road if
roa d depa rture is a re su lt of driver in attention .
I nstead, ESC imp roves the possibili ty of keep ing

t h e veh icle unde r contro l and on t he road d uring
extreme mane uvers by using the driver's steer ing
i nputs to help keep the veh icle go ing in the in­
tended direction. If you are traveling at a speed
that causes you to run off the road before ESC
can p rovide any assistance, you may not exper i­
ence the be nefits of ESC.
ESC is switc hed on all the time. In certa in s itua­
tions when you need less tract ion, you can sw itch
off ASR by press ing the button

The following systems are integrated in the ESC:
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
A BS prevents the w heels from locking w hen bra k­
i ng . The veh icle can still be steered even dur ing
hard braking. App ly steady p ressure to the brake
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A pulsing in the
brake peda l ind icates that the system is act ing to
stab ilize the veh icle.
Brake a ssist system
The brake assist system can decrease b raking dis­
tance. It increases b raking powe r whe n the dr iver
presses the b rake peda l quickly in emergency sit­
uat ions. You must press a nd hold the brake peda l
u nt il the dange rous situation is over . In vehicles
with adaptive cruise co ntrol*, the brake ass ist
syste m is more se nsitive if the distance detected
t o t he veh icle ah ead is too sm all. On vehicle s wi th
a ctiv ate d a nd fun ctioni ng nigh t vis ion assi st*, the
brake assis t sys tem can respond more sensit ively
i f there is a warning .
Anti-slip regulation (ASR )
ASR reduces e ngine powe r whe n the d rive whee ls
begin s pin nin g and ad apts the force to the ro ad
con ditions. This m akes i t easier to s tar t, a cce ler ­
ate and drive up incl ines .
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
E DL applies t he b rakes to a whee l th at s tarts
sp inning a nd transfers the dr ive power to the
othe r drivi ng whee ls . This fu nction is n ot a vail a-
b le at hig he r sp eeds . .,..
