The illum inatio n for the instrument cluster
lights up whenever yo u switch on the ignit ion
w ith the
vehicle headlights off. As the day­
light fades, the instrument cluster illumina­
tion likewise dims automatica lly and will go
out comp letely when the outs ide light is very
low . This feature is meant to remind you to
switch on the headlights when outside light
conditions become poor .

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow­
ing important points:
Engine cold
If the needle is at or close to the bottom of the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat­
ing temperature. Avoid high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy throttle applica­
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem ­
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the gauge and remain there.
If the engine is
working hard at high outside temperatures, the
needle may move higher on the gauge . This is not
a cause for concern as long as the . warning
li ght i n the inst rument cluste r display does not il-
luminate . ..,.

Warning light in the instrument cluster
display
If the . warning light in the instrument cluster
display flashes, this can mean one of two things:
either the coolant
temperature is too high, or the
coolant
level is too low~ page 29.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the
gauge, the coolant temperature is too high.
Stop
the vehicle, switch the engine off, and allow it
to cool. If the warning light comes on again after
driving a short distance, contact an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop .
..&, WARNING
- Always observe the warning in ~ page 220,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear or see any
steam or engine coo lant.
CD Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At high outside temper­
atures or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
iz ed Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible engine RPM after the break-in period . Be-
~ fore reaching this area, move the selector lever U"I

could damage your engine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

The !SET ! button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the
ISETI button ~fig . 4
with the ignition off .
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ~ page 2 7 constantly
monitors certain individual functions and compo­
nents of the vehicle when the ignition is turned
on and when the vehicle is moving.
With the ignit ion turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by press ing the
!SE TI but­
ton. You can pe rform an Auto-Check seq uence
when the vehicle is stationary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).

EPC Electronic power control
App lies to vehicles: with gaso line engine
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The Ga warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illuminates when you turn on the ign i­
tion as a function check.

If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a malfunc-

tion in the engine electronics . Have the mal­
function corrected as soon as possible by your
authorized Audi dea ler or qualified workshop .
W Glow plug system
Applies to vehicles: with diesel eng ine
The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If t he II ind icator light illuminates, the g low
plug system is active . You shou ld start the engine
immediately after the indicator light switches
off. The indicator light on ly illuminates for ap­
prox imately 1 second if the eng ine is warm or if
the outside temperature is above 46

- If the glow plug indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving, there is an engine control
ma lfunction. The engine should be checked
immediately .
-If the ind icator light does not illuminate at
all when switching the ignition on, there
may be a malfunction in the glow plug sys­
tem. The engine shou ld be checked.
;;./G, Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the Bl indicator light bl inks while driv ing, the
E SC or ASR (Ant i-Slip Regulat ion) is act ively regu­
lating .
If the
Bl ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can swit ch
the ignit io n off and then on to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Ind icator Lamp (MIL) is part o f
the On -Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system . The
symbo l ¢4 lights up when the ign ition is turned
on an d w ill tur n off aft er the engi ne has st arted
a nd has set tled at a cons tan t idle speed. This in­
d icat es that t he MIL is workin g pro p erl y.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunct io n in the eng ine e lec tron ic system .

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate (only vehicles

This warning/indicator light monitors the AB S
and the elec troni c differen tial lock ( EDL).

There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/ indica to r li ght does no t illum inate
when y ou switch on the ig nitio n.
- The warn ing/ indica to r li gh t does no t go out af­
t er a few seconds .
- The warning/ indica to r li ght illum ina tes while
driv ing .
The brake system will still respond even w ith ·
out the assistan ce of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance .

The ABS warning light and the brake warning
light come on together. The ABS will not work
and you will notice a change in braking re­
sponse and performance.
Malfunction in the brake system

Malfunction in the electronic different ial
lock (EDL )
The EDL works together with the ABS. The ABS
warning light wi ll come on if there is a ma lfunc­
tion in the EDL system
q page 19 0. See your au­
thor ized Audi dealer as soon as poss ible.
A WARNING
- If the~ (USA models)! IIJ (Canada mod­
els) warn ing light does not go out, o r if it
comes on while d riving, the ABS system is
not working prope rly. The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the st andard brakes
(withou t ABS). You wi ll not have the protec ­
tion ABS p rovides. Contact yo ur authorize d
Audi dealer as soon as possible .
- If the .. (USA
models) ,11 (Canada mod ­
els) brake system indicator light t urns on to­
gether wit h the ABS and ESC indicato r
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stab ilize the ve­
hicle are no longe r available . This could
ca use the vehicle to swerve and increase the
ri sk of sliding. Driv e ca refully to the near est
autho riz e d Au di dealer o r othe r quali fied
wor kshop a nd have the ma lf u n ction co rrect­
ed.

T he warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
trome chanical parking brake.
W ith the parki ng brake applied and the ignition
tur ned on, the. (USA models) /. (Cana-
da mo dels) wa rning/indicator light ill uminates .
Afte r the ign itio n has been turned off, the wa rn ­
i n g/i ndicator light co ntin ues to illum ina te fo r
about 30 seconds . If the parking bra ke is applied
w ith the ignition t urned off, the warning/indica­
tor light illuminates for abo ut 30 seconds.
T he warning/indicator ligh t will go o ut when t he
parking brake is re leased .
-
If t he war ning/ indicato r light flashes cont inuo us­
ly
after applying t h e p arking bra ke, braking force
is not suff icient to p revent the ve hicle from roll­
ing unintentiona lly . Please note the following :

If the slope of the groun d is too steep to park

- In the event of a pa rking brake malfunction,
the yellow
Iii symbol appears in the instru­

the malfunction repa ired as soon as possible by
an authorized A udi dealer or any ot her qualified
workshop.
BRAKE/C(D) Brake system
T he warning/indicator light flashes if brake fluid
level is low, if there is an ABS system malfunc­
tion or a parking brake malfunction .
The .. (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
l ight illum inates when the ignition is t urned on .
It goes out afte r the e ng ine has been started .
This ind icates that the brake wa rni ng light is
funct io ni ng prope rly.
If th e brake warning light doe s not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical syst em. In thi s
case, contact an authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/ind icator light flash ­
es , there is a brake system ma lfunction . By press­

At temperatures below 39 ° F (+4 °C), a snowflake
symbol appears in front of the temperature dis ­
play .
It is intended to remind the driver to pay
special attention to
ice on the road.
If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driving at
a very low speed, the temperature shown in the
display might be slightly higher than the actual
outside temperature . This is caused by the heat
being radiated from the engine.
The unit of measurement for the temperature
can be set in either °For in °Con the
MMI* or on
the radio control unit. The outside temperature
display automatically shows the unit of measure­
ment that has been set. For additional informa­
tion, see the MMI* or the radio instruction man­
ual.
_& WARNING
- Never use the outside temperature display
to determine if a road surface is icy or not.
Keep in mind that road surfaces, especially
bridges and overpasses, could be ice cov­
ered and slippery even at an outside tem­
perature above 39 °F (+4 °C) .
- Always remember, even if the "snowflake"
symbol (ice warning) does not appear in the
display, black ice could be on the road.
-Always reduce your speed and drive with
special care in cold weather conditions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases .

Current speed appears in the display . Speed is

You can switch the display from miles to kilome­
ters and vice versa via the radio or MMI*.
Open door or trunk lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the
trunk lid have been left open .

The Open Door/Trunk Lid warning displays if even
one door, the hood or the trunk lid is open. This
symbol also shows
which door or lid has not been
closed

As soon as the door, the hood and the trunk lid
are closed properly, the door and trunk lid warn­
ing turns off and the selected driver information
system functions are displayed again .
