The instrument ill umination for the needles
and dia ls t urns on when the igni tion is tur ned
on and the lights are tur ned off . The illumina­
tion for the dia ls reduces automatically and
eventually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the headlights on at the appropriate
time.

on. To prevent engine damage, please observe
the following notes about the temperature rang­
es .
Cold range
If the needle is at the bottom of the gauge, the
engine has not reached operating temperature
yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full accelerating
and heavy engine loads.
Normal rang e
The engine has reached operating temperature
when the needle moves into the center of the
gauge under norma l dr iving condit ions. The nee­
dle may move farther to the right on the gauge
with heavier engine load at high outside temper­
atures . This is no cause for concern as long as the
• indicator light in the instrument cluster does
not turn on . If the needle is fa r over on the r ight
s ide of the gauge and the . indicator light tu rns
on, then the coolan t temperatu re is too high

& WARNING
-Always observe the warning in ¢ page 177,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
firstsothatyoucannothearorseeany
steam or engine coolant .
(D Note
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheat ing during
high o utside temperatures and heavy en-
gine load.
- The front spoiler also helps to distr ibute
cooling air correctly wh ile driving .
If the
spo ile r i s damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase . See an a uthorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­
cility for assistance .
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev­
olutions per minute (RPM).
You shou ld sh ift to the next lowest gear when
the eng ine speed is be low 1 500 RPM. The beg in­
ning of the red zone in the tachometer indicates
the maximum permissible engine speed for all
gears once the engine has been broken in and
when it is warmed up to operating temperature. Before reaching this zone, you should sh ift into
the next highest gear , select the D selector lever
position, or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

damage. The locat ion where the red zone be­
gins varies depend ing on the engine.

Upshifting ear ly helps you to save fue l and re­
duce operating noise.
Fuel level
The fue l level indicator on ly operates when the
ignition is sw itched on . The

turns on if the reserve quantity of fuel is reached .
For the tank capacity in your veh icle, refer to the
Techn ica l Data ¢
page 230.
(D Note
Never drive until the tank is comp letely emp­
ty. The irregu lar supply of fuel that res ults
from that can cause the engine to m isf ire.
Non-combusted fuel will then enter the ex­
haust system . This can cause overheat ing and
damage to the catalyt ic converter.
Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
funct ions¢ .&..
With some indicator lights, messages may ap­ pear and warning signals may sound. The indica­
tor lights and messages in the display can be cov­ ered by other displays . Displaying driver messag­

Some indicator lights are shown in multip le col­
ors in the instrument cluster display.

Drive to an authorized Audi dea ler or a uthorized
Audi Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected.
¢ Q Turn signals
Whenever you use the left R or the right B
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When you
use the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
flash.
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the
turn signal will blink twice as fast as normal.
Carefully drive to your author ized Audi dealer im ­
mediately to have the malfunction corrected .

¢1¢ Trailer turn signal assembly
The indica tor light also blinks if the turn signal is
operated when towing a trailer .
The indicator light. blinks when the turn sig­
nal is used, if a trailer has been properly connect­
ed to the vehicle .
If one of the turn signal bulbs on the trailer is
burned out or defective, the indicator light will
not blink when you use the turn signals.
(D Tips
For vehicles with a trailer hitch that was in­
stalled later according to factory specifica­
tions, the trailer turn signal assembly is actu­
ated.

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You
have the following choices:
- Remote master key¢
page 29,
- Sensors in the front door handle on vehicles
with convenience key *
¢ page 30,
-Power locking switch insid e¢ page 31, oder
- Lock cylinder at the driver's door~
page 32.
Automatic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehi­ cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than
9 mph (15 km/h) .
The car is un locked again once the ignition key is
removed. In addition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locking sys­
tem switch or at one of the door levers is actuat ­
ed.
Addit ionally, in the event of a crash with airbag
deployment the doors are automatically un­
locked to allow access to the veh icle .
Selective unlocking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys­
tem will lock the doors and the rear lid. When
unlocking, you can set in the rad io or MMI*
whether
only the driver's door or the entire vehi­
cle should be un locked ¢
page 31 .
Anti-theft alarm warning system
If the anti-theft alarm warn ing system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoustic and visua l
warn ing s ignals are triggered .
The anti-theft alarm system turns on automati­
cally when you lock the vehicle. It deactivates
when unlocking using the remote control key or
~ by touc hing the sensor on the door handle (con-
ci ~ venience key).
Opening and closing
To switch the alarm off, p ress the@ button on
the remote contro l key or convenience key or
switch the ign ition on. The alarm also stops auto­
matically after a certa in amount of t ime.
You can also trigger the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key. This
will a lert other people in case of emergency .
Press the
PANIC button again to turn off the
alarm.
Turn signals
When you unlock the vehicle, the turn signals
flash twice, when you lock it once . If they do not
flash, one of the doors or the luggage compart­
ment lid is not locked, the ign ition is still switch­
ed on or the selector lever is not in position
P.
Unintentionally locking yourself out
In the following cases there are safeguards to
prevent you from locking your remote master key
in the veh icle:
- The vehicle does not lock with the central lock­
ing switch if the driver's door is open
¢page 31.
-On vehicles with convenience key*, if the most
recent ly used master key is in the luggage com­
partment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
aga in after it is closed.
Do not lock your veh icle with the remote master
key or convenience key* until all doors and the
rear lid are closed. In this way yo u avoid locking
yourself out acc identally.
A WARNING
-- When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you . This
will prevent passengers (children, for exam­
p le ) from accidenta lly being locked in the
veh icle should they accidentally press the
power locking switch in the front doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle un­
supervised. In an emergency it would be im­
possible to open the doors from the outside
without the key. .,.

-The light sensor for the automatic head­
lights* is in the rearview m irror mount.
Therefore, do not place any stickers in this
area on the windshield.
- Some of the exterior lighting functions can be adjusted
c:-page 41.
-If you turn off the ignition wh ile the exter ior
lights are on and open the door, you will
hear a warning tone.
- In cool or damp weather, the inside of the
headlights, turn s ignals and tail lights can
fog over due to the temperature d ifference
between the inside and outs ide . They will
clear short ly after sw itch ing them on . This
does not affect the serv ice life of the light­
ing .
Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever operates the turn signals, the high
beams and the headlight flasher.

Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle are in an emergen ­
cy s ituation .
.. Press the switch

gency flashers on or off.
When the em ergency f lashers are on , a ll four
turn signals blink at the same time. The turn sig­

ter, as well as the light in the emerge ncy flasher

You can indicate a lane change or a turn when the emergency flashers are sw itched on by using the
turn sig nal lever . The emergency flashers stop
temporar ily.
The emergency flashers also wo rk when the igni­
tion is turned off.
The emergency flashers wi ll tur n on a utomat ica l­
ly if you are in an accident where th e airbag has
dep loyed.

-you are the last veh icle standing in a traffic
j am so that any other ve hicles coming can
see you, o r when
- your ve hicle has broke n down or you are in
an emergency situation, o r when

This message appears when starting or stopping
the eng ine and Nor Pis not engaged. The engine
will not start/stop.
Ill Is key in the vehicle ?
The indicator light turns on and this message ap­
pea rs if the conven ience key* was removed from
the veh icle when the eng ine was runn ing. If t he
conven ience key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch the ignition on or start the engine
once yo u stop it. Yo u also ca nnot lock the vehicle
from the outside.
Shift to P , vehicle can roll away . Doors can only
be locked in P.
This message appea rs fo r safe ty re asons a long
with a warn ing sound if the se lector lever is not
e ng aged in P a fter swi tching the ignition off.
Move the selector lever to the P positio n. Other ­
wise the vehicle is not protected from rolling and
it cannot be loc ked.

This message appears if the re is no convenience
key * in side the veh icle or if the system does not
r ecognize the key. The conve nience key may not
