Some functions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operat ing status when you
switch the ignition on and while you are driving.
Malfunctions or requ ired service procedures are
s ignaled audibly and indicated by red and yellow
illuminated symbols and reminders in the dis­
play.
A WARNING
-
- Never rely exclus ively on the outside tem­
perature display to determine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in m ind that road
surfaces, especially br idges and overpasses,
co uld be ice covered and slippe ry even at an
outs ide temperature above 41 °F (+ S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snowflake"
symbol (ice warning) does not appear in the
display, black ice co uld be on the road.
- Always reduce you r speed and drive with
special care in cold weather condit ions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases.
(D Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driv­
i ng at a very low speed, t he temperature
shown in the disp lay m ight be slightly higher
than the actual outside temperature. This is
caused by the heat being radiated from the
engine.

Service interval display
The service interval display detects when your ve­
hicle is due for service.

- Inspection o r oil change reminder : after ace r­

til the next oil change or next inspection in the

Resetting the indicator
Your author ized Audi dealer or author ized Audi
Service Faci lity will reset the service interval dis­
p lay after pe rforming service.
If yo u have changed the oil you rsel f, you must re ­
set the oil change interva l.
To reset the display, se lect:

- Calculat ing the time to the next oil change
is inte rru pted when the vehicle battery is
disconnected . If the vehicle is not d riven for
a lo ng pe riod of time, check t he main te­
nance schedule so tha t you can fo llow the
maint enance in terva ls.

System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The M alfunction Indicator Lamp ( MIL) ¢'4 in the
i nst ru m en t cl uste r is p art o f the On-Boa rd Di ag­
n os tic ( OBD I I) system .
T he wa rn ing/i nd icator lig ht ill uminates w hen the
ignition is sw itch ed on and goes out after th e en­
gine sta rts and the id le h as stab ilized. This indi­
ca tes tha t the M IL is wor kin g p roperly.
If the light does not go out after the eng ine is
sta rted, or illum inates while you are d riving, a
malfu nction may ex ist in the e ngine sys tem. If
t h e lig ht illumin ates, the c ata ly tic converte r
cou ld be d amaged.

Climate control system
Description
Depending on the vehicle equ ipment, different
systems cou ld be installed:
- manual climate control system* or
- automatic climate control system*
The climate control system warms, coo ls and
adds humidity to the air in the vehicle interior. It
is the most effective when the windows and pan­
orama roof are closed. If there is a build-up of
heat inside the vehicle, vent ilation can help to
speed up the cooling process.
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filt er
The po llutant filter removes pollutants such as
dust and po llen from the a ir .
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the air conditioner can
proper ly work.
I f you drive yo ur vehicle in an area wi th high air
pollut ion, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified in your Audi War ­
ranty & Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your author iz ed Audi Service Advisor for advice.
K ey rec ognition *
The deluxe automati c climate control* settings
are stored and assigned to the remote contro l
key that is in use .
A WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can ca use
accidents.

- For safe driving it is very important that all
w indows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion.
- Complete ly familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and espec ially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat­
ing and vent ilation system . The washe r so lu­
tion may freeze o n the windshield and re­
duce visibility.

- If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid furthe r damage a nd have it inspected
by a q ualified deale rship .

- To prevent i nterference with the heating
and cooling ou tput and to prevent the win­
dows from fogging over, the air intake in
front of the windshie ld must be free of ice,
snow or leaves.
- The energy management system may switch
t h e seat heating * or rear window defroster
o ff temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy supply has been
restored.

Driving
When start ing from a stop

- When starting on incl ines, the hill start assist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll ­
ing back . The braking force
of the parking brake
is only released if sufficient drive power has
been built up at the wheels.

An emergency braking functions ens ures that the
vehicle can be s lowed down even if the
normal
brakes fail¢ page 73, Emergency braking
function.
,&. WARNING
- Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently when the veh icle is stationary and the
engine is running and a gear is selected.
Otherwise t he vehicle w ill start to move im­
med iate ly and could result in a c rash.
- If the power supply fa ils, the released park­
ing bra ke can no longe r engage. In th is
case, pa rk the veh icle on leve l ground and
sec ure it by placing the selector lever in the
P position. See an author ized Audi dealer or
authorized Aud i Service Faci lity for assis ­
tance .
(D Tips
-If the parking b rake is set while the ignition
i s sw itched off, the. indicator light in the
b utton and -(USA models) /. (Cana­
da models) will turn off after a certain
amount of time.
- Occasiona l noises when the parking brake is
set and re leased are normal and are not a
cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes thro ugh a self-test cycle at reg u­
l ar intervals. Any no ises assoc iated with this
are normal.
- If there is a power fa ilure, the parking brake
will not set if it is re leased, and it will not
release if it is set¢,&. See an authorized

- Always take the veh icle key with yo u when
leaving the vehicle, even for a short period
of time. This applies part icularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise chil­
dren could start the engine, release the
parking brake or operate electrical equip­
ment such as power w indows, which in­
creases the risk of an accident.
-
- No one should remain in the veh icle w hen it
is locked, especially ch ild ren. Locked doors
make it more difficult for emergency work­
ers to get into the veh icle, wh ich puts lives
at risk.
Starting from a stop
The start assist function ensures that the park­
ing broke is released automatically upon start­
ing.
Stopping and setting the parking brake
.. To set the park ing brake, pull on the(®) switch.
Starting and automat ically r elea sing the
parking brake
.. When you press the acce lerator pedal, the
parking brake is automat ica lly re leased and
your vehicle beg ins to move .
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping in
c ity traff ic, the parking brake can be applied . The
vehicle does not have to be held with the brake pedal. The park ing brake elim inates the tendency
to c reep when a se lector lever position is engag-
ed. As soon as yo u press t he accelerator pedal,

Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­ tion .
Before you check anyth ing in the eng ine compart­
ment,

page 177 .
The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specif ied in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet. This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil d iminish gradually
du ring normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the eng ine o il should
be changed more frequently . Change oil more of­
ten if you drive mostly short distances, ope rate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominantly
stop-and-go traffic cond it ions, o r have your vehi­
cle where temperatu res remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
look dark afte r the engine has been ru nning fo r a
short t ime. This is no rmal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the prob lem of proper disposa l, along
with the special tools and necessa ry expe rt ise re­
qu ired, we s trong ly recommend that you have

a qua lified service station.
If you choo se to chang e your oil your self, please
note the follow ing important information:
& WARNING
To reduce the risk of persona l injury if you
must change the eng ine oil in yo ur vehicle
yourself:
- Wear eye protection .
-
-To reduce the r isk of b urns from hot engine
oil, let the engine cool down to the touch.
- When removing the oil d rain plug with yo ur
fingers, stay as far away as possible. Always
keep your forearm parallel to the gro und to
he lp prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
- Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
- Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
- Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmf ul to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
and water .

Never mix oil additives with your engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and adverse ly affect your Audi Limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
