This message appears if you do not step on the
brake pedal to start the eng ine on a vehicle with
a n automatic transm ission .
Please engage Nor P.
This message appears when starting or stopping
the eng ine and Nor Pis not engaged. The engine
will not start/stop.
Ill Is key in the vehicle ?
The indicator light turns on and this message ap­
pea rs if the conven ience key* was removed from
the veh icle when the eng ine was runn ing. If t he
conven ience key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch the ignition on or start the engine
once yo u stop it. Yo u also ca nnot lock the vehicle
from the outside.
Shift to P , vehicle can roll away . Doors can only
be locked in P.
This message appea rs fo r safe ty re asons a long
with a warn ing sound if the se lector lever is not
e ng aged in P a fter swi tching the ignition off.
Move the selector lever to the P positio n. Other ­
wise the vehicle is not protected from rolling and
it cannot be loc ked.

The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

ca l p a rk ing brake . The pa rking brake is designed
to prevent the vehicle from ro lling un intent ional­
ly and replaces the hand brake.
In add ition to the normal f unctions of a tra d i­
t iona l h and b rake, t he elec tromec hanical parking
bra ke prov ides various conven ience and safety
functions .

Fuel and Refueling
while filling and can ignite fuel vapors
causing a fire.
- Always p lace a portable fuel container on
the ground before filling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle completely
inside the portable container before and
during filling.
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the filler nozzle must a lways be in
contact with the container . This will help
prevent static electricity from discharging
and cause a fire .
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or lug­
gage compartment. Fuel vapors are highly
flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provincial
laws regarding t he use, storage and trans­
portation of fuel containers .
- Make certa in the fuel container meets in­
dustry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F852-86) .

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it should
be removed immediately to prevent damage
to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozz le
switches off automatically for the first time ,
the tank is full. Do not try to add more fuel
because fuel may spill out . In addition, the
expansion space in the fuel tank will be filled -
causing the fuel to overflow when it becomes
wa rm and pollute the environment.
(0 Tips
- Running your engine while refueling may
cause vapors to escape or even cause fuel to
sp ill out of the tank. This would then shut
off the fuel nozzle before the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your vehicle with the ignition
turned on. The fuel gauge may otherwise
not indicate the correct fue l level after refu­
eling.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not
l ocked when you lock the veh icle from the
inside.

I f the cen tral locking system is faulty, the fuel
filler door can be unlocked manually .

For technical reasons do not use a battery charg­
er that uses vo ltage greater than 14.8 Volts to
charge your veh icle's battery .
A WARNING
-
Charging a battery can be dange rous.
- Always follow the operating instructions
provided by t he battery cha rge r manufactur­
er when charging yo ur battery .
- Never charge a frozen battery. It may ex­
p lode because of gas trapped in the ice. Al­
low a froze n battery to thaw out first .
- Do not reuse batteries which were frozen .
The batte ry hous ing may have c racked and
weakened when the battery froze .
- Charge the battery in a well ve ntilated area .
Keep away from open flame or electrical
spa rk. Do not smoke . Hydrogen gas generat­
ed by the batte ry is explos ive.
- To reduce the danger of exp losion, never
connect or d isconnect charge r cables while
t he charger is ope ra ting.
- F ast charg ing a battery is d ange rous and
should only be at tempted by a competen t
technici an with the prope r equipmen t.
- Ba ttery a cid that may spill duri ng cha rging
should be washe d off w it h a so lution of
warm water and baking soda to neutra lize
the acid.

Emergency situations
When jump starting or charging the bat­
tery, never connect the negative ground ca­
ble to the battery negative post because the
battery manager system must be able to de­
tect the battery's state of charge. Always
connect the negative ground cable to the
negative ground post of the battery manag­
er contro l unit.
Use of jumper cables
Make sure to connect the jumper cable clamps in
exactly the order described below!

The procedure described below for connecting
jumper cables is intended to provide a jump start for your vehicle.
Vehicle with discharged battery:
• Turn off lights and accessories, move lever of
automatic transmission to N (Neutral) or P
(Park) and set parking brake.
Connect POSITIVE (+) to POSITIVE (+) (red)
• To access the positive terminal, remove the
battery cover

1. Connect one end of the red pos itive cable on
the
jump start bolt (D c::> fig. 175 (Bolt under
cover= "positive") of the vehicle to be start­
ed @.
2. Connect the other end to the positive termi-
nal @ of the booster battery @.
Connect NEGATIVE (- ) to NEGATIVE (-)
(black)
3. Connect one end of the black negative cable
to the negative term inal @ of the booster
battery @.
4. Connect the other end to the
jump start bolt
@ (Bolt with hex head = "negative") of the
vehicle to be started @.
Starting the engine
• Start the eng ine of the vehicle with the booster
battery @. Run the eng ine at a moderate
speed.
• Sta rt engine w ith discharged vehicle ba ttery @
in the usual manner.
• If the engine fails to start: do not keep the
starter cranking for longer than 10 seconds.
Wait for about 30 seconds and then try again.
• With engine running, remove jumper cables
from both vehicles in the exact
reverse order.
• Fit the cover back onto the battery.
The battery is vented to the outside to prevent
gases from entering the vehicle interior . Make
sure that the jumper clamps are well connected
with their
metal parts in full contact with the
battery terminals.
&_ WARNING
To avoid ser ious personal injury and damage
to the vehicle, heed all warnings and instruc­
tions of the jumper cable manufacturer. If in
doubt, call for road service.
- Jumper cables must be long enough so that
the vehicles do not touch .
- When connecting jumper cables, make sure
that they cannot get caug ht in any moving
parts in the engine compartment.
- Do not bend over the batteries - danger of
chemical burns!
