Starting/stopping the engine

.. Slow the vehicle to a stop using the brake and
keep pressing the brake pedal. The engine will
switch off . The
[I] indicator light appears in the
information line in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
.. When you take your foot off the brake pedal,
the engine restarts. The indicator light turns
off.
Additional information
The engine will switch off in the P, D, N and S po­
sitions as well as in manual mode. In the P posi­
tion , the engine will also remain off if you take
your foot off the brake pedal. The eng ine starts
again when you select another selector lever po­
sition and take your foot off the brake pedal.
If you select the R position during a Stop phase,
the engine will start again.
Shift from D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from starting unintentionally when shifting
through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine will
stop or not by reducing or increasing the amount
of force you use to press the brake pedal. For ex­
ample , if you only light ly press on the brake ped­
al in stop-and and-go traffic or when turning, the
engine will not switch off when the vehicle is sta-

tionary. As soon as you press the brake down
harder, the engine will switch off.
General information

The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancelled
for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if cer­
tain conditions have been met. For example, the
engine will
not be switched off in the following
situations :
- The engine has not reached the minimum re­
quired temperature for Start-Stop-mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached .
- The outside temperature is extremely high/low.
- The windshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or there is
a steering movement .
- After engaging the reverse gear .
- On sharp inclines.
The

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following sit­
uations, for example . The engine restarts without
any action by the driver .
- The interior temperature varies from the tem-
perature selected in the A/C system. ..,.

-The windshield is being defrosted~ page 79.
-The brake pedal is pressed sever al t imes in a
row .
- T he battery charge level becomes too low .
- High power cons umption .
Switching the ignition off automa tic ally
To prevent the battery from dra ining, the ignition
will sw itch off
auto mati call y when all of the fol­
lowing cond itions have been met:
- The vehicle has already been driven.
- The eng ine has been turned
off by the Start-
Stop -System*.
- The driver's door is opened .
- The driver's seat bel t is removed.
- The brake pedal is not p ressed down.
- The veh icle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
p laced by the s ide marker lights. The side marker
lights will switch
off after appro ximately 30 mi­
nutes or when you lock the veh icle.
If the Start-Stop System has
not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start-Stop sys­
tem
off manually , the ignition will not be auto­
mat ica lly switched
off and the engine w ill contin­
ue to run~& .

If you shift in to the D, Nor S posit ions after
shifti ng into reve rse, the veh icle must be driv­

If you do not wish to use th e system, you can
switch it off manually.

Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay un­
der a specified maximum speed .
The speed warning system warns you if you are
exceeding the maximum speed that you have set .
You will hear a warning tone when your speed ex ­
ceeds the stored value by approximately 3 mph
(3 km/h). An indicator light . (USA models) .
(Canada models) in the instrument cluster dis­
p lay also tur ns on at the same time. The indicator
light •• turns off when the speed decreases
be low the stored maximum speed.
Setting a threshold is recommended if you would
like to be reminded when you reach a certa in
maximum speed. Situations where you may want
to do so include driving in a country with a gener ­
al speed limit or if there is a specified maximum
speed for winter tires.
(D Tips
Even though your vehicle is equipped with a
speed warning system, you should still watch
the speedometer to make sure you are not
driving faster than the speed limit.
Setting the threshold
You con set, change and delete the threshold in
the MMI.

ICARI function button > Car systems
contro l button > Driver assist > Speed warning.
You can set any threshold between 20 mph (30
km/h) and 150 mph (240 km/h). Settings can
each be adjusted in increments of S mph (10 km/
h).

The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .

Driving settings
Introduction
Aud i drive select makes it possib le to experience
d ifferent types of veh icle sett ings in one veh icle.
The driver ca n select three
Comf ort, Aut o and
Dyn am ic modes in the MMI to switch between a
sporty and a comfortable driving mode.
You can a lso adjust the setting accord ing to your
p references in the
indi vidual mode. For example,
you can combine settings such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the Audi drive select can
cause collisions, other accidents and serious
personal injury.
Description
-
The follow ing systems are affected by drive se­
lect:
Engine and t ransm is sion
Depending on the mode, the engine and the
transmission respond quicker or in a more ba l­
anced manner to accelerator pedal movements.
In the sporty dynamic mode, the transmission
shifts at h igher RPMs.
Air suspe nsion
The adaptive air suspension/adaptive air suspen­
sion sport*
(Air suspension in the MMI) is an
electronically controlled air suspens ion and
damping system . They are adjusted depending
on the se lected dr iving mode, the driver's steer­
ing, b raking and acceleration input and the road
surface, vehicle speed and load. A spo rty setting
is gene rally used in veh icles with adaptive air sus­
pens ion sport*.
The vehicle clearance va ries depending on these­
lected mode and the speed .
The highway setting is activated automatically
when yo u drive above 75 mph (120 km/h) for
mo re than 30 seconds in the
au to or dynamic

mode. The ground clea rance is increased auto ­
matically if the speed drops below 44 mph (70
km/h) for more than 120 seconds.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering rat ios. Indirect stee ring that moves
easily, like the steering in com fort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering .
The following app lies to veh icles with dynamic
steering*: the steering ratio changes based on
vehicle speed in order to maintain optimum
steering effort for the dr iver at a ll times . This
sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
trol. At reduced speeds, however, steering is more d irect in order to keep t he steering effort as
min imal as possible whe n the dr iver is maneuve r­
i ng the vehicle. A t low and ave rage speeds, dy­
namic steeri ng addit ionally prov ides more re ­
spons ive steering performance.
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive sys tem
(quattro)
~ page 195, the Sport differe ntia l*
dist ributes t he d riving powe r to the rear axle de ­
pend ing on the s ituation. The distr ib ution of
power va ries depending on the selected mode,
from ba lanced (comfort) to agile (dynamic). The
goal is a high level of agility and ability to accel­
erate on curves. The vehicle is very responsive to
steering.
Cur ve light *
The curve light adapts to driving on curves . The
pivoting action and the lighting are also adapted
to the mode.
Adapt ive cruise control*
The behavio r whe n accelerating ca n be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode. Adaptive cruise contro l also
responds to the driving behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner . ..,_

Engine sound *
The sou nd of the engine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subt le to sporty.
(D Note
- Make sure there is enough cle arance above
and below t he vehicle when parking. The
height of the vehicle can change once it is
parked due to temperature f luctuations,
changes to the load conditions and changes
to the driving modes, which can affect clear­
ance.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car­
rier, tra in, ship or by other means, only t ie
the vehicle down at the running surface of
the tires, which is the outer circumference.
Securing the vehicle at the axle compo­
nents, suspe ns ion struts or towing eyes is
not permitted be cause the press ure in the
air suspension struts can change dur ing
transport . The vehicle may not be secured
sufficiently if this happens .

activate the trailer operation mode

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
auto and
dynamic modes.
- Se lecting the
d ynami c mode resu lts i n spor­
ty shifting characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages a utomatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*, op ­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­ ping the engine. This does not indicate a
problem.
Audi driv e se lect
- In vehicles w ith sport differential*, the dy­
namic mode is deactivated when towing a
trailer .
Selecting the driving mode
You con choose between Comfort, Auto , Dynamic
and Individual .

You can change the driv ing mode when the vehi­
cle is stationary or while driving . If traff ic per­
mits, afte r changing modes, briefly take your
foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently
selected mode is also activated for the engine.
comfort -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on h ighways.
auto -provides an overall comfortable yet dy­
nam ic dr iving feel and is suited for every day use.
dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving fee l
and is suited to a sporty driving style.

You can adjust the vehicle settings to your personal preferences.

cont rol button. You can now adjust the individ­
ual systems.

for driving offroad even when it is ra ised .

The selector lever does not lock if you shift from D to R within one second. This a llows you to
"rock" the vehicle to free it when it is stuck.
P -Par k
The whee ls are loc ked in this pos it ion. On ly shift
into park when the vehicle is stationary

button on the selector lever and shift into the P
position .
You can on ly shift out of park when the engine is
running and you are pressing the brake pedal.
Press the button on the se lector lever to release
the parking lock and se lect the desired selector
lever position .
P engages automatically when you switch the en­
gine off while D, Sor R is engaged or in manual
mode.
I f you sw itch the engine off when N is engaged,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged .
You must use the emergency re lease proced ure
to release the parking lock before tow ing the ve­
hicle

R - Reverse
The reverse gear is engaged in this pos ition. On ly
select reverse when the vehicle is stat iona ry and
the eng ine is r unning at idle speed

gage the R selector leve r position, press the but ­
ton on the selector lever, press the brake pedal
and move the selector lever into the R position.
The back-up lights turn on when yo u select the R
se lector lever posit ion while the engine is run­
ning.
Autom atic tran sm iss ion
N -Neutral
The tra nsmission is in idle in th is position. To en­
gage the N selector leve r position, press the but ­
ton on the selecto r lever and shift into the N po­
sition .
If you swi tch the eng ine off when N is engaged ,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged.
You cannot se lect t he N pos it ion when the igni ­
t ion is swit ched off. When dr iv ing th rough an au ­
tomatic car was h, fi rst select the N position and
then switch the engine off

The veh icle cannot be lo cked when the se lector
lever is in the N position .
DIS -Position for driving forw ard
In the D/S position, the transmission can be op ­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S. Yo u can only se lect the S se lector
lever posit ion when D is engaged . Move t he selec­
tor leve r bac k to engage the S selector lever posi­
tion . To select the D selector lever position again
when S is engaged, move the se lector lever back
c:::> .&. . To shift from N to D when traveling at
speeds below 1 mph (2km/h), press the brake pedal and select the D selector lever pos it ion
c:::> .&. .
In the norm al mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty driving . Th e
vehicle makes full use of the eng ine 's power.
Sh ift ing may become noticeable when accelerat­
i ng .
The S se lector lev er position engages automati­
ca lly when you select the dynamic mode in Audi
drive select.
A WARNING ,.___
- Never engage R or P while driving . It could
cause a crash .

Automatic transmissio n
-Power is sti ll transmitted to the w heels
w hen the eng ine is r unning at idle. To pre­
vent the veh icle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions except P and N when the en­
gine is runn ing . Do not inadvertently press
t h e accelerator pedal when the vehicle is
s tationa ry. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately. This cou ld happen
even if the parking brake is activated.
- Before opening the hood, se lect the P sele c­
tor leve r pos ition and se t the park ing bra ke .
This reduces the risk of a crash . Always read
and follow the applicab le warnings
<=> page 220.
- Never get out of the driver's seat when the
engine is running.
- If you must get out of the vehicle, move the
selector lever securely into the P position
and apply the parking brake.
(D Tips
- If you un intent ionally shift in to the N selec­
tor lever position whi le driving, ta ke your
foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the engine to slow down unt il it is idling be­
fore yo u shift into D or S.

helpful to switch to manua l mode temporar ily to

then move the selector lever to the P position .
This prevents too muc h stress from be ing placed
on the locking mechanism .
