sition.

tion, switch the ignition on and press the wind­
shield w iper lever.

• Lift the w indshield w iper arm up from the
windshield.
• Press the locking knob
(D Q fig. 56 on the wiper
blade . Hold the wiper blade firmly .
• Remove the wiper b lade in the direct ion of the
arrow.
Attaching th e wiper blade
• Install the new wiper blade in the reta iner on
the wiper arm @untilyou hear it click into
place on the wiper arm .
• Place the w iper arm back on the w indshie ld.
• Turn the service position off.

For your safety, you should replace the wiper
blades once or twice a year . See your author­
ized A udi dealer for replacement blades.
(D Note
- The windshield w iper blades must only be
replaced when in the service pos ition! Oth­
erwise, you r isk damaging the paint on the
hood or the w indshield wiper motor .
- You should not move your vehicle or press
the windsh ield wiper lever when the wiper
arms are folded away from the windshie ld.
T he windshield w ipers would move back in­
to their original pos ition and co uld damage
the hood and windshie ld.
- T o help prevent damage to the wiper sys­
tem, always loosen blades which a re froze n
to the windshield before operat ing wipers.
- T o help prevent damage to w iper blades, do
not use gasoline, ke rosene, paint th inner, or
other solvents on or near the wiper blades.
- T o help prevent damage to the wiper arms
or othe r componen ts, do no t at tempt to
move the wipers by hand.

- Commercia l hot waxes applied by automatic
car washes affect the how easily the glass
surface can be cleaned.
- You can also use the service pos it ion, for ex­
ample, if you want to protect the windshield
from icing by using a cover .

• Fold the windshield wiper arm away from the
windshield.
• Pull the wiper blade and holder out of the
mount.

Digital compass
Switching the compass on and off
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The compass direction is shown in the rearview
mirror.

The digital compass only works when the ignition is on. The directions are indicated with abbrevia­
tions :

Light and Vision
(D Tips
To prevent inaccurate compass readings, do
not bring any remote controls, electrical devi­
ces or metallic objects near the mirror.
Adjusting the magnetic zone
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The magnetic zone must be adjusted correctly
for the compass to read accurately.

Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the air in the veh icle inter ior. It
is the most effective when the windows and sun ­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture .
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water under the veh icle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
P ollutant filt er
The pol lutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the a ir.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the intervals specif ied in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir cond it ione r can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollut ion, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than specified i n your Aud i War­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your author ized Audi Service Advisor for advice.
Ke y cod ed setting s
The climate control settings are automatically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use .

Reduced visib ility is dangerous and can ca use
accidents.
- For safe dr iv ing it is very impo rtan t that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
t ion .

- Complete ly familiarize yourself with the
proper use and function of the heating and
ventilation system and espec ially how to de­
fog and defrost the wi ndows .
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshield first, using the heat­ ing and vent ilation system. The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windshield and re­
duce visibi lity.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has
been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a q ualified dealership.
- Repa irs to the Aud i air cond itioner requ ire
special techn ica l know ledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an a uthorized Audi dealer fo r
assistance.

By reduc ing the amo unt of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the a ir.
(D Tips
- Keep t he a ir intake slots (in front of the
windshield) free from ice, snow and debr is
in orde r to maintain the prope r funct ion of
the climate control system .
- The energy management sys tem may sw itch
the seat heating* o r rea r window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are available
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of clothing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

Braking
What affects braking efficiency?
New brake pads
During the firs t 25 0 miles (400 km), new b rake
pads do not possess their full braking effect , they
have to be "broken i n" first ¢& . You can com­
pensate for this slight ly reduced braking power
by push ing harder on the brake pedal. Avoid
heavy braking loads during the break-in period .
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automobiles a re still sub ­
ject to wear, depend ing largely on ope rating con ­
ditions and driving habits¢& . On vehicles that
are either dr iven most ly in stop-and-go city traf­
f ic or are driven hard, the brake pads should be
checked by you r authorized Aud i dea ler more of­
ten than spec ified in the
Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet .
Failu re to have your brake pads
i n spected c an resu lt in reduced bra ke pe rform­
ance.
O n steep slopes, you sho uld use the braking ef ­
fect of the eng ine . This way, you prevent unnec­
es sary wear on t he b rake system. If yo u m ust use
your b rake s, d o not hold the brakes down cont in­
uously. Pum p th e b rakes at intervals.
Operating noise
Noises may occur when brak ing depend ing on the
speed, b raking force and outs ide cond it ions such
as tempe ra tu re and humidi ty.
Effect of water and road salt
In certain s ituations, for example after driving
through water, in heavy ra in, afte r ove rnig ht con ­
densat ion or after washing your car, the b raking
effect can be reduced by mo isture or ice on the
b rake rotors and b rake pads . T he brakes must be
d ried first w ith a few careful b rake a pplica tions.
At highe r speeds and with t he windsh ield wipers
tur ned on, the br ake pads press aga inst the brake
rotors for a sho rt amoun t of time. This occur s at
regular intervals w it h out t he dr iver noticing and
p rov ides for better bra ke response time under
wet conditions.

The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a salt-covered road
and t he b rakes are not used . Likewise, yo u clean
off accum ulated salt coating from brake discs
and pads with a few caut ious app lications of the
brake ¢& .
Corrosi on
There may be a tendency fo r dirt to build up on
the b rake pads and corrosion to form on the discs
i f the car is not driven regu larly or only for short
trips with little use of the brakes .
If the bra kes are not used frequent ly, or if corro­
s ion has formed on the discs, it is advisable to
clean off the pads and discs by braking firmly a
few times from a moderately high speed ¢ &.
Faults in th e brake system
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in brake
pedal travel , then one of t he two brake circu its
may have failed¢& .
Low brake fluid level
Malfu nctions can occu r in the brake system if the
br ake fluid level is too low . The brake fluid leve l
is mo nitored electronica lly .
Brake booster
The bra ke booster i ncreases the press ure t hat
yo u ge nera te with the brake ped al.
It works only

Brake lining wear status
Brake lining wea r may be c hecked by visua l in­
spection o f the condition of the brake pads
t hr ough t he openings in t he wheel. If necessary,
t h e wheel m ay be removed fo r thi s inspe ction

_& WARNING
- New brake pads don't have the be st sto p­
ping power and m ust be " broken-in" du ring
the initial 250 miles (400 kilometers). You
can compensate for this by p ressing the
brake pedal more firmly. This also app lies
later w hen new pads are installed.

General information
Regular, proper care helps to maintain your vehi­
cle's value.
It can a lso be a requirement when
submitting warranty claims for corrosion damage
and paint defects on the body.
The necessary care products can be obtained
from your authorized Audi dealer. Read and fol­ l ow the instructions for use on the packaging.
A WARNING
- Using clean ing and care products incorrectly
can be dangerous to your health.
-Always store cleaning and care products out of reach of chi ldren to reduce the r isk of po i­
soning .

- Preferably use environmentally-friendly
products when buying cleaning agents.
- Do not dispose of leftover cleaning and care
products with household trash.
Car washes
The longer that deposits remain on the vehicle,
the mor e the surface may b e damaged . High
temperatures such as those caused by sunlight
increase the damag ing effect.
Before washing, rinse off heavy deposits with
p lenty of water .
S tu bborn depos its s uch as bird d roppings or tree
sap are best removed with plenty of water and a
microfiber cloth.
A lso , wash the underside of yo ur vehicle once
road sa lt stops being used for the season.
Pressure washers
When washing your ve hicles w ith a pressure
washer, always follow the operating instructions
p rovided w ith the pressure washer. This is espe­
cially importa nt in regard to the pressu re and
sp raying distance . Do no t aim the sp ray directly
at seals on side windows, doors, the hood, the
l uggage compartment lid or the sunroof * or at

ti res, rubber hoses, insulating mate rial, sensors *
or camera lenses* . Keep a distance of at least
40.64 cm (40 cm) .
Do not remove snow and ice with a pressure
washer.
Never use rota ry nozzles or high pressure noz­
zles.

Automat ic car wa she s
Spray off the vehicle before washing.
Make s ure that the windows and roo f* are closed
and the windshield wipers are off . Follow instruc ­
tions from the car wash operator, especially if
there are accessories attached to your vehicle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes .
Washing
by hand
Clean the ve hicl e starting from the top and wor k­
i ng down using a soft sponge o r cleaning br ush.
U se solvent -free cleaning produ cts.
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint
by
hand
T o avo id damag ing the pa int w hen washing, fi rst
remove dust and large par ticl es from you r vehi­
cle . Insects, grease spots and fingerprints are
best removed with a special cleaner for matte
finish paint.
Apply t he product using a microf iber cloth . To
avoid damaging the paint surface, do not use too
much pressure.
Rinse the ve hicl e thoroug hly w ith wate r. Then
cl ean usi ng a neutral shampoo and a soft micro­
fiber cloth .
Rinse the ve hicle thorough ly aga in and let it air
dry. Remove any wate r residue using a sham my.
- On ly wash the vehicle when the ign ition is
off and follow the instr uctions from the car

wash operator to reduce the risk of acci­
dents.
- To reduce the risk of cuts, protect yourself
from sharp metal components when was h­
ing the underbody or the inside of the wheel
housings.
- A fter washing the vehicle, the braking effect
may be delayed due to mo isture on the
brake rotors or ice i n the winter. The brakes
must be dried first w it h a few careful brake
applications.

- If you wash the ve hicle in an automatic car
wash, you must fold the exterior m irrors in
to reduce the risk of damage to the mirrors.
Power folding exte rior m irrors* must on ly
be fo lded in and out us ing the power folding
f u nct io n.
- T o p revent paint damage, do not wash the
vehicle in di rect sunlight. -
To red uce the risk of damage to the s urface,
do not use insect removing sponges, k itchen
sponges o r similar items .
- Matte finish painted vehicle components:
- To reduce the r isk of damage to the sur-
face, do not use polishing agents or hard
wax.
- Neve r use protective wax. It can destroy
the matte finish effect .
- Do not place any stickers or magnetic
signs on vehicle parts painted with matte
finish paint. The paint could be damaged
when the stickers or magnets are re­
moved.

Only wash t he veh icle in facili ties spec ially de­
s igned for that pu rpose. This will reduce the
r isk of dirty wate r cont am ina ted with o il from
en te ring the sewe r system.

ter-repelling windshield coating agents. Un­

Checking and Filling Hood
Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that
the windshield wipers are flat against the w ind­
shie ld. Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.

Working in the engine compartment
Be e specially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.

engine compartment, for example checking and
filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burn s and a ccidents. To prevent per sonal injury
