WARNING
•Children must never be allowed in the front passenger's seat.
• Occupants in the front passenger'sseat must never sit on the edge of theseat, sit leaning toward the instrumentpanel or otherwise sit out of position.
• The occupant's back must be asupright as comfort allows and beagainst the seat back with the seatbelt properly fastened.
• Feet must be on the floor, e.g., not onthe dash, seat or out of the window.
WARNING
•No objects or accessory equipment, e.g. dashboard covers, may be placedon, attached to, or installed near theair bag hatch (the area above the glovecompartment) or the area affected byairbag deployment (see the illustrationon page 22).
• There should be no loose articles,such as coffee cups on the floor, seat,or dashboard area.
• Never try to open the airbag cover onthe steering wheel or the passenger'sside dashboard. This should only bedone by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
• Failure to follow these instructions canresult in injury to the vehicle occu-pants.

Unlocking the tailgate from the driver'sseat
–Press the button on the lighting panel (1) to unlock (but not open 2
) the tailgate.
NOTE
The taillights will illuminate automatically for a short period when the tailgate hasbeen opened.
Locking the tailgate with the remote key
Press the lock button () on the remote.
See also page 61 The alarm indicator on the dashboard will begin flashing to show that the vehicle islocked and that the alarm has been armed.
Opening the tailgate manually
The tailgate is held closed by an electronic locking mechanism. To open:
1. Press lightly on the rubberized plate
under the handle to release the lock.
2. Lift the handle to open the tailgate.
CAUTION
• When pressing the rubberized plate, only light pressure is necessary torelease the tailgate's electronic lockingmechanism.
• When opening the tailgate, pull it upusing the handle. Too much pressureon the rubberized plate can damageits electrical connections.

This button also opens, but does not close, the tailgate on models equipped with the optional power tailgate (see page 291).

The alarm system
The alarm is automatically armed whenever the vehicle is locked with the remote key oroptional Personal Car Communicator. When armed, the alarm continuously moni- tors a number of points on the vehicle. Thefollowing conditions will trigger the alarm:• The hood is forced open.
• The tailgate is forced open.
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition slot is tampered with.
• An attempt is made to start the vehicle with a non-approved key (a key notcoded to the car's ignition).
• The battery is disconnected (while thealarm is armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarmis disarmed.
A message will appear in the information dis- play if a fault should occur in the alarm sys-tem. Contact a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.
NOTE
Do not attempt to repair any of the compo- nents in the alarm system yourself. Thiscould affect the insurance policy on thevehicle.
The alarm indicator light
The status of the alarm system is indicated by the red indicator light on the dashboard (seeillustration):
• Indicator light off: the alarm is not armed
• The indicator light flashes at one-second intervals: the alarm is armed
• The indicator light flashes rapidly beforethe remote key is inserted in the ignitionslot and the ignition is put in mode
I: the
alarm has been triggered.
Arming the alarm
–Press the Lock button on the remote key. One long flash of the turn signals will con-firm that the alarm is armed.

Introduction
Air conditioningThe vehicle is equipped with Electronic Cli- mate Control (ECC). The climate control sys-tem cools, heats or dehumidifies the air in thepassenger compartment.
NOTE
• The air conditioning can be switched off, but to ensure the best possible cli-mate comfort in the passenger com-partment and to prevent the windowsfrom misting, it should always be on.
• In warm weather, a small amount ofwater may accumulate under the carwhen it has been parked. This water iscondensation from the A/C systemand is normal.
Sensor location
•
The sunlight sensor is located on the top side of the dashboard.
NOTE
The sunlight sensor monitors which side of the car that is most exposed to sunlight.This can mean that the temperature maydiffer between the right and left-side airvents, even if the temperatures set for bothsides of the passenger compartment arethe same.
•The temperature sensor for the passen- ger compartment is located below the cli-mate control panel.
• The outside (ambient) temperature sensoris located on the door mirror.
• The humidity sensor* is located in theinterior rearview mirror.
NOTE
Do not cover or block the sensors with clothing or other objects.
Side windows and laminated panoramic roof
To ensure that the air conditioning works optimally, the side windows, and the lamina-ted panoramic roof should be closed.
Fog on the inside of the windowsThe defroster function should be used toremove fog or mist from the inside of the win-dows. Keeping the windows clean with a commercially available window washingspray will also help prevent fogging or mist-ing.
Temporary shut-off of the air
conditioning
The air conditioning is momentarily disen-gaged during full acceleration or when drivinguphill with a trailer. This may result in a tem-porary increase in cabin temperature.
Ice and snowAlways keep the air intake grille at the base ofthe windshield free of snow.
Climate system maintenanceSpecial tools and equipment are required tomaintain and carry out repairs on the climatesystem. Work of this type should only bedone by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician.
RefrigerantVolvo cares about the environment. The airconditioning system in your car contains aCFC-free refrigerant – R134a. This substancewill not deplete the ozone layer. See page386 for the amount of refrigerant in the A/Csystem. The system uses PAG oil.

The figure consists of three buttons. When a button is pressed, the corresponding figurewill appear in the display with an arrow indi-cating which manual air flow has beenselected (see the following illustration). Seealso the air distribution chart on page 223.

AutoThe function automatically regulates cooling, heating,blower speed, recirculation,and air distribution to main-tain the chosen temperature.If you select one or moremanual functions, the other
functions continue to be controlled automati-cally. The air quality sensor is engaged and allmanual settings are switched off when AUTO
is pressed. The display shows

NOTE
Selecting the lowest blower speed may increases the risk of fog forming on thewindows.

Heating or cooling cannot be speeded up by selecting a higher/lower temperaturethan the actual temperature required.
