When trouble arises
If the electronic key does not operate properly (vehicles with a smart entr y & start system)
Unlocking and locking the doors
Use the mechanical key (P. 31)
in order to perform the following
operations:
Unlocks all the doors
Locks all the doors
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted (P. 41) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened and the engine can be started by following the procedure
below.

Starting the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive
Ensure that the shift lever is in P and firmly depress the brake
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start sys-
tem is deactivated in customiza-
tion setting, the “ENGINE START
STOP” switch will turn to ACCES-
SORY mode. Modes can be
changed by pressing the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch
with the brake pedal released.
(The mode changes each time
the switch is pressed.)
Firmly depress the brake pedal and check that the smart entry
& start system indicator light (green) turns on.
Press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.
In the event that the “ENGINE START STOP” switch still cannot be
operated, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.

Vehicles with a manual transmission
Ensure that the shift lever is in N and depress the clutch
pedal.
Touch the Toyota emblem side of
the electronic key to the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch.
The “ENGINE START STOP”
switch will turn to IGNITION ON
mode.
When the smart entry & start sys-
tem is deactivated in customiza-
tion setting, the “ENGINE START

Stopping the engine
Vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to P and press the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the engine.
Except vehicles with a Multidrive: Shift the shift lever to N and press the
“ENGINE START STOP” switch as you normally do when stopping the
engine.
Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommended that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.

Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the alarm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm system is set,
the alarm may be triggered. (P. 117)
If the doors cannot be locked or unlocked by the smart entry & start
system
Lock and unlock the doors by the mechanical key or wireless remote control.
When the electronic key does not work properly
Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

Changing “ENGINE START STOP” switch modes (if the smart entry &
start system has been deactivated in a customized setting)
Release the brake pedal (except for manual transmission) or clutch pedal
(for manual transmission) and press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch in
above.
The engine does not start and modes will be changed each time the switch
is pressed. (P. 176)

When trouble arises
If the batter y is discharged
The following procedures may be used to start the engine if the vehi-
cle's battery is discharged.
You can also call any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
If you have a set of jumper (or booster) cables and a second vehi-
cle with a 12-volt battery, you can jump start your vehicle by follow-
ing the steps below.
Open the hood. (P. 367)
Pull the rubber strip on the edge to unhook it from the
cover, and then push the tabs in and lift the cover off.
Left-hand drive vehicles
Right-hand drive vehicles

Vehicles with diesel engine: Remove the engine cover.
Raise the front of the engine
cover to detach it from the
clips and then pull the cover to
detach it from the brackets on
the rear bar as shown in the
illustration.
Gasoline engine
Connect the jumper cables according to the following procedure:
Positive (+) battery terminal on your vehicle
Positive (+) battery terminal on the second vehicle
Negative (-) battery terminal on the second vehicle
Connect the jumper cable to ground on your vehicle as shown in

Diesel engine
Connect the jumper cables according to the following procedure:
Positive (+) battery terminal on your vehicle
Positive (+) battery terminal on the second vehicle
Negative (-) battery terminal on the second vehicle
Connect the jumper cable to ground on your vehicle as shown in
the illustration.
Start the engine of the second vehicle. Increase the engine
speed slightly and maintain at that level for approximately 5
minutes to recharge the battery of your vehicle.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Open and close
any of the doors with the “ENGINE START STOP” switch
off.

Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Maintain the
engine speed of the second vehicle and turn the engine
switch to the “ON” position, then start the vehicle's engine.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Maintain the
engine speed of the second vehicle and turn the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch to IGNITION ON mode, then start the
vehicle's engine.
Once the vehicle’s engine has started, remove the jumper
cables in the exact reverse order in which they were con-
nected.
Reinstall the cover, and then hook the rubber strip's groove
onto the cover.
