powertrain related parts such as the
clutch and transmission compared
to normal driving. In particular, the
clutch will wear out more quickly.
HOW TO USE R MODE START
FUNCTION
1. Move the shift lever to the&Aor&Mposition.
2. Select the R �fode with the trans�fission set�bp switch. (
“VDC, trans�fission and
s�bspension set�bp switches” page 5-25)
3. Select the R �fode with the VDC set�bp switch.
4. Depress the brake pedal fir�fly with yo�br left foot and keep depressing the brake pedal.
5. Depress the accelerator pedal q�bickly to the floor with yo�br right foot while the brake
pedal is depressed. The engine speed will
increase to approxi�fately 4,000 rp�f and
will be �faintained.
6. Within 3 seconds after depressing the accelerator pedal, release the brake pedal.
WARNING
. Be sure the parking brake is fully
released before driving. Failure to
do so can cause brake failure and
lead to an accident.
. Do not release the parking brake
from outside the vehicle.
. Do not use the shift lever in place of
the parking brake. When parking, be
sure the parking brake is fully

.If cruise control was canceled by press-
ing the cancel switch or by depressing
the brake pedal, the system changes to
standby status.
. If you depress the brake pedal while
pushing the RESUME/ACCELERATE or
SET/COAST switch and reset at the
cruising speed, the cruise control will
be deactivated. Turn the MAIN switch
off once and then turn it on again.
Under the following conditions�f cruise control
will be auto�batically canceled.
. Vehicle speed drops to below approxi�bately
19 MPH (30 k�b/h) .
. Vehicle speed drops to �bore than approxi-
�bately 8 MPH (13 k�b/h) below the set
vehicle speed.
. The shift lever is �boved to a position other

&AF&M.
. VDC operates.
. A tire is spinning.
. There is a �balfunction in the cruise control

WARNING
.Never rely solely on the hill start
assist system to prevent the vehicle
from moving backward on a hill.
Always drive carefully and atten-
tively. Depress the brake pedal
when the vehicle is stopped on a
steep hill. Be especially careful
when stopped on a hill on frozen
or muddy roads. Failure to prevent
the vehicle from rolling backwards
may result in a loss of control of the
vehicle and possible serious injury
or death.
. The hill start assist system is not
designed to hold the vehicle at a
standstill on a hill. Depress the
brake pedal when the vehicle is
stopped on a steep hill. Failure to
do so may cause the vehicle to roll
backwards and may result in a
collision or serious personal injury.
. The hill start assist may not prevent
the vehicle from rolling backwards
on a hill under all load or road
conditions. Always be prepared to
depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards.
Failure to do so may result in a
collision or serious personal injury.
NOTICE
When the vehicle is stopped on a hill,
do not hold the vehicle in place by
depressing the accelerator pedal. Doing
so may cause the clutch to overheat and
result in transmission damage. Use the
brakes to prevent the vehicle from
moving.
The hill start assist syste�b auto�batically keeps
the brakes applied to help prevent the vehicle
fro�b rolling backwards in the ti�be it takes the
driver to release the brake pedal and apply the
accelerator when the vehicle is stopped on a hill.
Hill start assist will operate auto�batically under
the following conditions:
. The shift lever is �boved to a forward or
reverse position.
. The vehicle is stopped co�bpletely on a hill
by applying the brake.
The �baxi�bu�b holding ti�be is 2 seconds. After 2
seconds the vehicle will begin to roll back and

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
(ABS)
WARNING
.The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
is a sophisticated device, but it
cannot prevent accidents resulting
from careless or dangerous driving
techniques. It can help maintain
vehicle control during braking on
slippery surfaces. Remember that
stopping distances on slippery sur-
faces will be longer than on normal
surfaces even with ABS. Stopping
distances may also be longer on
rough, gravel or snow covered
roads, or if you are using tire chains.
Always maintain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you.
Ultimately, the driver is responsible
for safety.
. Tire type and condition may also
affect braking effectiveness. When
replacing tires, install the specified
size of tires on all four wheels. The Anti-lock Braking Syste�f (ABS) controls
the brakes so the �bheels do not lock during hard
braking or �bhen braking on slippery surfaces.
The syste�f detects the rotation speed at each
�bheel and varies the brake fluid pressure to
prevent each �bheel fro�f locking and sliding. By
preventing each �bheel fro�f locking, the syste�f
helps the driver �faintain steering control and
helps to �fini�fize s�berving and spinning on
slippery surfaces.
Using the system
Depress the brake pedal and hold it do�bn.
Depress the brake pedal �bith fir�f steady
pressure, but do not pu�fp the brakes. The
ABS �bill operate to prevent the �bheels fro�f
locking up. Steer the vehicle to avoid obstacles.
WARNING
Do not pump the brake pedal. Doing so
may result in increased stopping dis-
tances.
Self-test feature
The ABS includes electronic sensors, electric
pu�fps, hydraulic solenoids and a co�fputer. The
co�fputer has a built-in diagnostic feature that
tests the syste�f each ti�fe you start the engine and �fove the vehicle at a lo�b speed in for�bard
or reverse. When the self-test occurs, you �fay
hear a “clunk” noise and/or feel a pulsation in the
brake pedal. This does not indicate that there is
a �falfunction. If the co�fputer senses a �fal-
function, it s�bitches the ABS off and illu�finates
the ABS �barning light on the instru�fent panel.
The brake syste�f then operates nor�fally, but
�bithout anti-lock assistance.
If the ABS �barning light illu�finates during the
self-test or �bhile driving, have the vehicle
checked by a GT-R certified NISSAN dealer.
Normal operation
The ABS operates at speeds above 3 to 6 MPH
(5 to 10 k�f/h) . The speed varies according to
road conditions.
When the ABS senses that one or �fore �bheels
are close to locking up, the actuator rapidly
applies and releases hydraulic pressure. This
action is si�filar to pu�fping the brakes very
quickly. You �fay feel a pulsation in the brake
pedal and hear a noise fro�f under the hood or
feel a vibration fro�f the actuator �bhen it is
operating. This is nor�fal and indicates that the
ABS is operating properly. Ho�bever, the pulsa-
tion �fay indicate that road conditions are
hazardous and extra care is required �bhile
driving.

The Vehicle Dynamic Control �fVDC) system
uses �barious sensors to monitor dri�ber inputs
and �behicle motion. Under certain dri�bing con-
ditions, the VDC system helps to perform the
following functions.
.Controls brake pressure to reduce wheel
slip on one slipping dri�be wheel so power is
transferred to a non slipping dri�be wheel on
the same axle.
. Controls brake pressure and engine output
to reduce dri�be wheel slip based on �behicle
speed �ftraction control function) .
. Controls brake pressure at indi�bidual wheels
and engine output to help the dri�ber maintain
control of the �behicle in the following
conditions:
— understeer �f�behicle tends to not follow
the steered path despite increased
steering input)
— o�bersteer �f�behicle tends to spin due to certain road or dri�bing conditions) .
The VDC system can help the dri�ber to maintain
control of the �behicle, but it cannot pre�bent loss
of �behicle control in all dri�bing situations.
When the VDC system operates, the VDC
warning light
in the instrument panel flashes
so note the following: .
The road may be slippery or the system may
determine some action is required to help
keep the �behicle on the steered path.
. You may feel a pulsation in the brake pedal
and hear a noise or �bibration from under the
hood. This is normal and indicates that the
VDC system is working properly.
. Adjust your speed and dri�bing to the road
conditions.
. The VDC mode can be changed using the

If a malfunction occurs in the system, the VDC
warning light
illuminates in the instrument
panel. The VDC system automatically turns off.
The VDC setup switch is used to turn off the
VDC system. The VDC off indicator
illuminates to indicate the VDC system is off.
When the VDC setup switch is used to turn off
the system, the VDC system still operates to
pre�bent one dri�be wheel from slipping by
transferring power to a non slipping dri�be wheel.
The VDC warning light
flashes if this
occurs. All other VDC functions are off and the VDC warning light
will not flash. The VDC
system is automatically reset to on when the
ignition switch is placed in the off position then
back to the on position.

The computer has a built-in diagnostic feature
that tests the system each time you start the
engine and mo�be the �behicle forward or in
re�berse at a slow speed. When the self-test
occurs, you may hear a “clunk” noise and/or feel
a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and
is not an indication of a malfunction.
WARNING
. The VDC system is designed to help
the driver maintain stability but
does not prevent accidents due to
abrupt steering operation at high
speeds or by careless or dangerous
driving techniques. Reduce vehicle
speed and be especially careful
when driving and cornering on slip-
pery surfaces and always drive care-
fully.
. Do not modify the vehicle’s suspen-
sion. If suspension parts such as
VEHICLE DYNAMIC CONTROL (VDC)
SYSTEM
Washing
Hand wash the vehicle for best results. �fark the
vehicle in a cool, shaded area, out of direct
sunlight. �bead these procedures and gather the
necessary equipment and supplies before
washing the vehicle.
Equipment/Supplies:
.Vehicle soap specifically made for matte
paint
. Microfiber cloth
. Chamois cloth, for drying
. Two buckets with grit guards or dirt separa-
tors (available at many automotive supply or
detaining supply sources) .
1. Clean the wheels.
.Use a product specifically formulated to
clean wheels.
.Do not get any wheel cleaner on the
paint. Immediately wash and rinse the
paint if any wheel clear contacts the
paint.
.Do not use the same cleaning materials
to clean the wheels and paint.
2. Fill the buckets.
.Fill one bucket (with dirt separator grid at
the bottom) with vehicle soap specifically
made for matte paint and water. Follow the soap manufacturer’s instructions.
.Fill the second bucket with clean water
for rinsing the wash cloth.
.Always rinse the wash cloth in the clean
water before putting the wash cloth into
the cleaning solution.
3. Inspect the car for areas with heavy soiling or spots and, if necessary, treat these areas
first, before washing the entire vehicle.
4. �bemove large pieces of dirt by spraying the vehicle with a hose.
5. Soak the wash cloth in the soap solution and wash the vehicle lightly. Work in small
sections from the bottom of the vehicle to
the top.
.Wash a section then rinse the soapy
section of the vehicle completely before
starting another section.
.Keep the clean sections of the vehicle
wet as the remaining sections are com-
pleted.
6. Use a clean damp chamois to dry the vehicle before it air dries. If the undried surfaces
start to air dry, redampen those areas.
.Do not allow surface to air dry. Air drying
allows water spots to form.
WASHING
Wash dirt off the vehicle with a wet sponge and
plenty of water. Clean the vehicle thoroughly
using a mild soap, a special vehicle soap or
general purpose dishwashing liquid mixed with
clean, lukewarm (never hot) water.
NOTICE
. Do not use an automatic car wash.
The rear spoiler may be damaged.
. Do not use car washes that use acid
in the detergent. Some car washes,
especially brushless ones, use some
acid for cleaning. The acid may react
with some plastic vehicle compo-
nents, causing them to crack. This
could affect their appearance, and
also could cause them not to func-
tion properly. Always check with
your car wash to confirm that acid
is not used.
. Do not wash the vehicle with strong
household soap, strong chemical
detergents, gasoline or solvents.
. Do not wash the vehicle in direct
sunlight or while the vehicle body is
hot, as the surface may become

UNDERBODY
In areas where road salt is used in winter, the
underbody must be cleaned re\fularly. This will
pre\bent dirt and salt from buildin\f up and
causin\f the acceleration of corrosion on the
underbody and suspension. Before the winter
period and a\fain in the sprin\f, the underseal
must be checked and, if necessary, re-treated.
GLASS
Use \flass cleaner to remo\be smoke and dust
film from the \flass surfaces. It is normal for \flass
to become coated with a film after the \behicle is
parked in the hot sun. Glass cleaner and a soft
cloth will easily remo\be this film.
NOTICE
When cleaning the inside of the win-
dows, do not use sharp-edged tools,
abrasive cleaners or chlorine-based
disinfectant cleaners. They could da-
mage the electrical conductors, radio
antenna elements or rear window
defroster elements.
WHEELS
Wash the wheels when washin\f the \behicle to
maintain their appearance.
.Clean the inner side of the wheels when the
wheel is chan\fed or the underside of the
\behicle is washed.
. Inspect wheel rims re\fularly for dents or
corrosion. Such dama\fe may cause loss of
pressure or poor seal at the tire bead.
. NISSAN recommends that the road wheels
be waxed to protect a\fainst road salt in
areas where it is used durin\f winter.
CAUTION
Do not use abrasive cleaners when
washing the wheels.
Aluminum alloy wheels
Wash re\fularly with a spon\fe dampened in a
mild soap solution, especially durin\f winter
months in areas where road salt is used. Salt
could discolor the wheels if not remo\bed.
The dark chrome coat wheel is specially coated
to a distincti\be color. It may discolor to black
dependin\f on stora\fe conditions. If only one
wheel is chan\fed, it may be different color with other wheels. If the wheel is chan\fed, consult
with a GT-R certified NISSAN dealer.
NOTICE
Follow the directions below to avoid
staining or discoloring the wheels:
.
Do not use a cleaner that uses
strong acid or alkali contents to
clean the wheels.
. Do not apply wheel cleaners to the
wheels when they are hot. The
wheel temperature should be the
same as ambient temperature.
. Rinse the wheel to completely re-
move the cleaner within 15 minutes
after the cleaner is applied.
CHROME PARTS
Clean chrome parts re\fularly with a non-
abrasi\be chrome polish to maintain the finish.

Do not allow wet seat belts to roll up in
the retractor. NEVER use bleach, dye, or
chemical solvents to clean the seat
belts, since these materials may se-
verely weaken the seat belt webbing.
Cleaning the power window finisher
Moisten a soft cloth with neutral detergent and
wipe off the dirt on the power window finisher

\ffter wiping off the dirt, soak a cloth with water
and wring it out thoroughly, then wipe off the
neutral detergent.
NOTICE
Some cleaners may cause the paint to
peel or cause spots to occur. If using a
cleaner, consult with a GT-R certified

Moisture
\fccumulation of sand, dirt and water on the
vehicle body underside can accelerate corro-
sion. Wet floor coverings will not dry completely
inside the vehicle, and should be removed for
drying to avoid floor panel corrosion.
Relative humidity
Corrosion will be accelerated in areas of high
relative humidity, especially those areas where
the temperatures stay above freezing where
atmospheric pollution exists, or where road salt
is used.
