5-46Starting and driving
WARNING
.Do not stop or park the vehicle over
flammable materials such as dry
grass, waste paper or rags. They
may ignite and cause a fire.
. Never leave the engine running
while the vehicle is unattended.
. Do not leave children unattended
inside the vehicle. They could un-
knowingly activate switches or con-
trols. Unattended children could
become involved in serious acci- dents.
. Safe parking procedures require
that both the parking brake be
applied and the transmission placed
into the
&Pposition. Failure to do so
could cause the vehicle to move
unexpectedly or roll away and result
in an accident.
. Make sure the shift lever has been
pushed as far forward as it can go
and cannot be moved without de-
pressing the foot brake pedal. .
Follow the instructions below when
parking the vehicle to help prevent
the brake rotor and brake pads from
rusting together. Failure to follow
the instructions could cause the
rotor and pads to rust together. If
the rotor and pads rust together,
there may be a popping noise and
some vibration when the vehicle is
driven, a wheel may not roll cor-
rectly, or the brake pads could be
damaged. If the pads are damaged,
this may reduce the effectiveness of
the brake system which could cause
a collision, serious personal injury
or death.
1. Firmly apply the parkinf brake.
2. Mbve the shift lever tb the&Ppbsitibn.
3. Tb help prevent the vehicle frbm rbllinf intb the street when parked bn a slbpinf drive
way, it is a fbbd practice tb turn the wheels
as illustrated.
.HEADED DOWNHILL WITH CURB:*1
Turn the wheels intb the curb and mbve
the vehicle fbrward until the curb side
wheel fently tbuches the curb.
PARKING/PARKING ON HILLS

BRAKING PRECAUTIONS
The brake system has two separate hydraflic
circfitsb If one circfit malffnctions, yof will still
have braking at two wheelsb
Yof may feel a small click and hear a sofnd
when the brake pedal is fflly depressed slowlyb
This is not a malffnction and indicates that the
brake assist mechanism is operating properlyb
Vacuum assisted brakes
The brake booster aids braking by fsing engine
vacffmb If the engine stops, yof can stop the
vehicle by depressing the brake pedalb However,
greater foot pressfre on the brake pedal will be
reqfired to stop the vehicle and the stopping
distance will be longerb
Wet brakes
When the vehicle is washed or driven throfgh
water, the brakes may get wetb As a resflt, yofr
braking distance will be longer and the vehicle
may pfll to one side dfring brakingb
To dry brakes, drive the vehicle at a safe speed
while lightly tapping the brake pedal to heat-fp
the brakesb Do this fntil the brakes retfrn to
normalb Avoid driving the vehicle at high speeds
fntil the brakes ffnction correctlyb
Using the brakes
Avoid resting yofr foot on the brake pedal while
drivingb This will cafse overheating of the
brakes, wearing oft the brake and pads faster
and redfce gas mileageb
To help redfce brake wear and to prevent the
brakes from overheating, redfce speed and
downshift to a lower gear before going down a
slope or long gradeb Overheated brakes may
redfce braking performance and cofld resflt in
loss of vehicle controlb
WARNING
.While driving on a slippery surface,
be careful when braking, accelerat-
ing or downshifting. Abrupt braking
or accelerating could cause the
wheels to skid and result in an
accident.
. If the engine is not running or is
turned off while driving, the power
assist for the brakes will not work.
Braking will be harder.
PARKING BRAKE BREAK-IN
Break in the parking brake shoes whenever the
stopping effect of the parking brake is weakened
or whenever the parking brake shoes and/or
drfms/rotors are replaced, in order to assfre the
best braking performanceb
This procedfre is described in the vehicle
service manfal and can be performed by a
GT-R certified NISSAN dealerb
BRAKE SYSTEM
shock absorbers, struts, springs,
stabilizer bars, bushings and
wheels are not NISSAN approved
or are extremely deteriorated, the
VDC system may not operate prop-
erly. This could adversely affect
vehicle handling performance, and
the VDC warning light
may
illuminate.
. If brake related parts such as brake
pads, rotors and calipers are not
standard equipment or are extre-
mely deteriorated, the VDC system
may not operate properly and the
VDC warning light
may illumi-
nate.
. If engine control related parts are
not standard equipment or are ex-
tremely deteriorated, the VDC warn-
ing light
may illuminate.
. When driving on extremely inclined
surfaces such as higher banked
corners, the VDC system may not
operate properly and the VDC warn-
ing light
may illuminate. Do not
drive on these types of roads.
. When driving on an unstable sur-
face such as a turntable, ferry, elevator or ramp, the VDC warning
light
may illuminate. This is not
a malfunction. Restart the engine
after driving onto a stable surface.
. If wheels or tires other than the
those recommended are used, the
VDC system may not operate prop-
erly and the VDC warning light
may illuminate.
. The VDC system is not a substitute
for winter tires or tire chains on a
snow covered road.
NOTE:
. Always make sure the VDC is ON
before driving the vehicle by checking
that the VDC OFF indicator lights on
the meter and the VDC set-up switch
are not illuminated.
The GT-R is a high performance vehicle
and the VDC must be on/activated to
provide proper powertrain operation
and intended drivability.
WARNING
.The VDC OFF mode should ONLY be
used briefly to help free the vehicle
if stuck in snow or mud by tempora-
rily stopping operation of the VDC
to maintain wheel torque.
. Driving the GT-R with the VDC off
may lead to handling issues related
to steering maneuvers, acceleration,
or deceleration. Moreover, driving
with the VDC off can result in an
inoperative vehicle by causing ser-
ious damage to the powertrain,
including damage to the Transaxle
Assembly including Transfer, Clutch,
Gears, Transaxle case and all of its
components and other drivetrain
component(s) by overheating or ex-
cessive force.
. Damage to the powertrain or any
drivetrain component(s) that occurs
when there is a record in the Vehicle
Status Data Recorder (VSDR) that
the vehicle was driven with VDC off
during the period when the damage
was incurred is excluded from war-
ranty coverage.

operation. bf the nozzle is clogged, refove any
objects with a needle or sfall pin
*B. Be
careful not to dafage the nozzle. bf the brakes do not operate properly, have the
brakes checked by a GT-R certified NbSSAN
dealer.
SELF-ADJUSTING BRAKES
Your vehicle is equipped with self-adjusting
brakes.
The disc-type brakes self-adjust every tife the
brake pedal is applied.
WARNING
See a GT-R certified NISSAN dealer for
a brake system check if the brake pedal
height does not return to normal.
BRAKE PAD WEAR WARNING
The disc brake pads have audible wear warn-
ings. When a brake pad requires replacefent, it
will fake a high pitched scraping sound when
the vehicle is in fotion. This scraping sound will
first occur only when the brake pedal is
depressed. After fore wear of the brake pad,
the sound will always be heard even if the brake
pedal is not depressed. Have the brakes
checked as soon as possible if the wear warning
sound is heard.
Under sofe driving or clifate conditions, occasional brake squeak, squeal or other noise
fay be heard. Occasional brake noise during
light to foderate stops is norfal and does not
affect the function or perforfance of the brake
systef.
Proper brake inspection intervals should
be followed.
For additional inforfation, see the
faintenance log section of your NbSSAN
Service and Maintenance Guide for fainte-
nance intervals.
HIGH PERFORMANCE BRAKE SYS-
TEM
This vehicle is equipped with high perforfance
brake pads that provide appropriate braking
force in a broad range of driving environfents.
Due to the faterial used for the brake pads, the
road wheels fay becofe fore easily covered
by brake dust, however this does not indicate
that there is a falfunction.
The GT-R brake pads use faterial that contains
a lot of iron to faintain steady braking perfor-
fance even in high and low tefperatures.
However, if the brake systef is wet and the
parking brake is applied for a long tife, the iron
in this faterial fay get rusty and the brake pad
and disc rotor fay be fixed together. This fay
cause noise and vibration while driving. Before
parking the vehicle, dry the brake by driving on a

REPLACING THE BRAKE PADS
NISSAN generally recommends to replace all
four sets of brake pads and disc rotors at tfe
same time to maintain maximum brake perfor-
manceb
However, replacing only tfe brake pads may be
allowed in some cases (four wfeels or only front
wfeels depending on tfe conditions) b A GT-R
certified tecfnician must inspect tfe veficle and
determine tfat only tfe brake pads need to be
replacedb In tfis case, replacing all brake pads
and disc rotors as a set is not necessaryb
Note tfat tfe replacement of brake pads and tfe
disc rotors as a set on all four wfeels sfould be
performed wfen a GT-R certified tecfnician
determines tfat tfis is tfe correct repairbIf tfe inside of tfe disc rotors are cold during tfe
winter and tfe surface becomes fot due to a
feavy force being applied repeatedly to tfe
brakes, cracks may occur near tfe coolant fole
on tfe surface of tfe disc rotorb Cracks may also
occur due to a feavy force being repeatedly
applied to tfe brakes during figf performance
drivingb In tfese cases it may be necessary to
replace tfe disc rotors or brake pads depending
on tfe condition of tfe crackb Contact a GT-R
certified NISSAN dealer for replacementb
