N00576100025
The power liftgate ca
n be opened automati-
cally when all of the
following conditions are
met.
WA R N I N GTo avoid accidental
or unintended opera-
tion of the power li
ftgate, turn off the
power liftgate main switch when not oper- ating the power liftgate. Do not turn off the power liftgate main switch while the power liftgate is opening or closing.CAUTION Do not apply excessive force to the power liftgate when opening
or closing it. Doing so
could damage to the power liftgate.
NOTE
Do not start the engine while the power lift- gate is operating. The sudden operation pre-vention mechanism c
ould operate, making
the power liftgate stop intermittently while it moves. The power liftgate
cannot be opened when
the battery is discha
rged or disconnected.
The liftgate must be then opened using theinside liftgate release. Refer to “Inside lift
gate release” on page
5-43. If the keyless entry system or close switch is operated when the power liftgate mainswitch is off, the warning buzzer sounds 4 times to notify the driver that the power lift- gate cannot
be operated.
 The power liftgate doe
s not operate normally
under the following conditions: • When parked on an incline • In strong winds • When the power liftga
te is covered with
snow
 Repeated continuous
opening and closing
operation of the power lif
tgate will activate a
built-in protection ci
rcuit and switch the
power liftgate to
 manual operation.
If one of the power liftgate switches is oper- ated while the power lift
gate is operating, the
power liftgate will reverse and return to the full open or
close position.
If the selector lever is moved from “P” (PARK) position to another position whilethe power liftgate is operating or completelyopen, a warning buzzer will sound for approximately 10 sec
onds to notify the
driver that the power liftgate is open. If the battery or fuse is replaced while the power liftgate is open,
 it cannot be closed
automatically. In this case close the power liftgate manu- ally.

If the auto reverse sensors (A) on either sideof the power liftgate de
tect that something is
being trapped by the cl
osing power liftgate,
the warning buzzer will sound once and the liftgate will automatically reverse directionand return to the full open position.
After the power liftgate has opened automati- cally, if it is detected that the power liftgate is dropping due to factors such as accumulated snow, the power liftgate will close automati-cally.
A warning buzzer w
ill sound continuously
while the drop prevention mechanism is oper-ating. If the engine is started while the power lift- gate is operating, the power liftgate mayintermittently move
or stop moving to pre-
vent the power liftgate from moving abruptly. Approximately 10 seconds after the powerliftgate has fully closed or opened, power lift- gate operation will again resume.
NOTE
If the close switch is again pressed once while the power liftgate
 is operating in the
opening direction, th
e warning buzzer will
sound once and the power liftgate will close.
Auto reverse

WA R N I N G The auto reverse mechanism will not oper- ate just before the power liftgate becomesfully closed. Therefore, be careful not totrap a hand, part of your body or an object at this time. When the power liftgate is closed manu- ally, the auto reverse mechanism will not operate. If the auto reverse mechanism has been repeatedly activated
, the power liftgate
may stop and then, de
pending on its posi-
tion, may abruptly open
 or close. Once the
power liftgate is completely closed oropen, automatic operation will be resumed.CAUTION Do not damage the auto reverse sensor, when loading or unloading lugga
ge. If the sensor is
damaged, the power liftgate will not close automatically.

NOTE
 If snow has accumulate
d on the power lift-
gate, remove it befo
re operating the power
liftgate. Do not install any acce
ssory other than Mit-
subishi Motors Genui
ne parts on the power
liftgate. The drop prevention mechanism may be activated due to
 the weight of the
accessory. The drop prevention mechanism could be activated if you attempt to close the liftgate manually immediately af
ter the power lift-
gate has been comple
tely opened automati-
cally.

in the multi-information display while you are driving, there could be a malfunction inthe automatic transaxle.
N00514201395
This position locks the transaxle to prevent the vehicle from moving.
 The engine can be
started from the “P” (PARK) position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. At this position, the
transaxle is disengaged.
It is the same as th
e neutral position on a
manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the automatic transaxle while driving, the warning dis- play or the warni
ng display will appear
on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display. In this case, immediat
ely park your vehicle
in a safe place and fo
llow these procedures:
When warning display is showing The automatic transaxle fluid is overheating. Stop your vehicle in a
safe place, put the
selector lever in the
“P” position, and open
the engine hood with the engine running to allow the engine to c
ool down. After a while,
confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If thewarning display rema
ins or flashes fre-
quently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility
of your choice.

This position is used for most city and high- way driving. The transaxle will automatically change its gear depe
nding on road and driv-
ing conditions.
This position is for dr
iving up very steep hills
and for engine braking at low speeds when driving down steep hills.
N00514401430
While the vehicle is stopped or being drivenwith the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “L” (LOW) position manual shifting can be selected by pulling one of the shift paddlestowards you.
WA R N I N G Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving sinceyou could accidentally
slip it into the “P”
(PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position, damaging the transaxle. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope,
the engine should be
started in the “P” (P
ARK) position, not in
“N” (NEUTRAL) position. To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) positi
on, or when shift-
ing into or out of
“N” (NEUTRAL) posi-
tion.
“D” DRIVE

CAUTION To prevent transaxle damage, never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion.
“L” LOW

WA R N I N G this position can be used for maximum engine braking. Be very careful not to shift into “L” (LOW) suddenly.Sudden engine braking may cause the tires to skid. Select this position according to the roadconditions and vehicle speed.
Sports mode

NOTE
 For vehicles equipped
with the sportronic
steering wheel paddle sh
ifter, sports mode
can be selected by shifting gears even whenthe selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) or “L” (LOW) position. Also, you can return to the “D” operation inany of following ways. When returning to “D” operation, the selec- tor lever position displa
y will change to “D”
(DRIVE) position. • Pull the +(SHIFT UP)
side sportronic steer-
ing wheel paddle shif
ter forward (toward
the driver) for over 2 seconds. • Stop the vehicle When the paddle shifter is operated with the selector lever in the “L” (LOW) position, gear is not shifted
because the selectable
shift range is limited. When the selector lever is in the “L” (LOW) position and sports mode is selected, thevehicle will stay in
 sports mode and not
return to “L” (LOW) driving even if the vehicle is stopped.

To park the vehicle, fi
rst bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the sele
ctor lever to the “P”
(PARK) position. If the transaxle does not change gears while driving, or your vehicle does not pick upenough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may be that there is something unusual happening in the
transaxle, causing a
safety device to activa
te. Have your vehicle
checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair fac
ility of your choice as
soon as possible.
N00560200034
The CVT will automati
cally and continuously
change its gear ratio depending on road anddriving conditions. This helps achieve smooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. Also you can manually shift up and shiftdown the transmission. Refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-72. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving.
According to the conditions, the transmission will automatically shift to a lower gear ratio to achieve stronger engine braking. This mayhelp reduce your need
to use the service
brake.
N00560301061
As an additional safe
ty precaution, models
equipped with a continuously variable trans-mission have a shift-lock device that holds the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position. To move the selector lever from the “P”(PARK) position to another position, follow the steps below. 1. Press and hold the brake pedal down. 2. Move the selector lever to the desiredposition.
Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler-ation may occur if the se
lector lever is in a
position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).
