Fuel selection 3-2 General information
3
N00301000879
Your vehicle is designed to use unleaded gas- oline only. It is equipped with a fuel fillertube especially designed to accept only a small diameter unlead
ed gasoline dispensing
nozzle. In the United States, fuel suppliers are required by law to add detergents to their gas-
oline to minimize fuel-injector fouling and minimize intake-valve deposits. Detergent gasoline helps keep your engine in tune and your emission-control system working prop-erly. Your vehicle is designed to operate on pre- mium grade unleaded gasoline having a mini-mum octane number of 93 [(MON+RON)/2] or higher for optimum performance. In case premium grade unleaded gasoline 93[(MON+RON)/2] is not available, unleaded gasoline rating of 91 [(MON+RON)/2] can be used. However, the performance level isreduced. In order to maintain exhaust system durabil- ity, premium unleaded gasoline having anoctane number of at least 91 [(MON+RON)/2] must be used If the premium grade unleaded gasoline rat-ing of 91 [(MON+RON)/2] or higher is not available on journey, etc., regular unleaded gasoline having an octane number of 87[(MON+RON)/2] can be used temporarily as an emergency measure. MON: Motor Octane Number RON: Research Octane Number
Gasoline sold at some service stations con- tains oxygenates such as ethanol, althoughthe oxygenates may not be identified by those names. Oxygenates are required in some areas of the country. Such fuel can be used inyour vehicle. A mixture of up to 10 % ethanol (grain alco- hol) and 90 % unleaded gasoline may be usedin your vehicle, provided the octane number is at least as high as that recommended for unleaded gasoline. Do not operate your vehicle on gasoline con- taining methanol (wood alcohol). Using thistype of alcohol could adversely affect the vehicle’s performance and damage critical parts of the vehicle’s fuel system.
Fuel selection
WA R N I N G Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriouslyinjured or killed when handling it. When- ever you refuel your vehicle, stop the engine and keep flames, sparks, andsmoking materials away from the vehicle. Always handle fuel in well-ventilated out- door areas.CAUTION Using leaded gasoline in your vehicle will damage the engine, catalytic converter, and the oxygen sensors. Also, using leaded gaso-line is illegal, and will void your warranty coverage of the engine, catalytic converter, and oxygen sensors.

NOTE
The driving range is determined based on the fuel consumption data. This may vary depending on the driving conditions and hab-its. Treat the distance displayed as just a rough guideline.
When you refuel, the driving range display is updated. However, if you only add a small amount of fuel, the correct value will not be displayed. Fill to a full tank whenever possible. When your vehicle is stopped on an extremely steep hill, the driving range valuemay, change. This is due to the movement of fuel in the tank and does not indicate any breakdown. The display setting can be changed to the preferred units (miles or km).Refer to “Changing the function settings (With ignition switch in the “ON” position)” on page 5-103.

Vehicle care and maintenance 9-3
9
To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage: Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”. Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter. Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests. Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning. To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni- tion switch. Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or the engine has a malfunction. If you are not able to stop driving immediately, slowdown and drive for only a short time. Have an inspection made by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible. In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice for service.
N00937500510
Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood.
CAUTION Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If the engine malfunctions or mis- fires, or if your vehicle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is overheated may result in damage to the converter and vehicle.WA R N I N G Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. Do not put undercoat paint on the cata- lytic converter.

2 to 6 PSI from the cold inflation pressure. Do not let air out of the tires to get back to the specified cold pressure, or your tire pressure will be too low.Check your tires each time you refuel. If one tire looks lower than the others, check the pressure for all of them. You should also take the following safety pre- cautions: Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load-ing information placard attached to thedriver’s door sill.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and air leaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on the valve stems.
N00939600397
N00939700037
The following maintenance steps are recom- mended: Check tire pressures regularly.
Have regular maintenance done on the wheel balance and front and rear suspen- sion alignment. Rotate your tires regularly as described in the “Tire rotation” section on page 9-18.
N00939800201
The standard-equipment tires use a high-gripcompound that gives superior grip. However, they wear more quickly than typi- cal passenger-car tires. Tread wear indicators are built into the origi- nal equipment tires on your vehicle to help you know when your tire
s should be replaced.
Many states have laws requiring that you replace your tires at this point.
Replacing tires and wheels
CAUTION Avoid using different size tires and wheels from the ones listed, and avoid the com- bined use of different types of tires and wheels. Using different size or type tires andwheels may affect driving safety. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5.
Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif- ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting in pos-sible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be
subjected to excessive
loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious prob- lems. Even if a wheel has the same rim size and offset as the specified type of wheel, its shape may prevent it from being fitted cor-rectly. Consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice before using wheels that you have. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, use only Mitsubishigenuine wheels. Other wheels do not permit correct installa- tion of tire inflation pressure sensors and cancause air leakage and sensor failure, which would not be covered by your vehicle’s war- ranty.
