0050Solutions The low-voltage protection system integrated in the control unit
switches off the auxiliary heating because the on-board voltage is
less than 10 V.
X Have the alternator and battery checked.
or The fuse is blown.
X Replace the fuse; see the "Fuse allocation" supplement.
X Have the cause of the blown fuse determined at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop.
or A malfunction has occurred.
X Switch the ignition on and off twice.
If the auxiliary heating still cannot be switched on, the heating
device is faulty.
X Have the auxiliary heating checked at a qualified specialist
workshop. The auxiliary heating is
overheated. The coolant level is too low.
X Check the coolant level and add more coolant if necessary
(Y page 253). Operating the cargo compartment air
vents If your vehicle is equipped with a roof venti-
lator, you can ventilate and extract air from
the cargo compartment. X
Turn the key to position 2in the ignition
lock.
X To activate and extract air: press the
upper section of the 00A8switch.
The roof ventilator removes used air from
the cargo compartment.
X To activate and ventilate: press the lower
section of the 00A7switch.
The roof ventilator feeds fresh air into the
cargo compartment.
X To switch off: set the switch to the middle

Apply the parking brake.
X Turn the key to position 0in the ignition
lock and remove it.
The immobilizer is activated.
X Secure the vehicle to prevent it from rolling
away (Y page 149). Wheel chock
Use the wheel chock or a similar object to
prevent the vehicle from rolling away, e.g.
when parking or changing a wheel. Wheel chock in the load/passenger compartment
X To remove the wheel chock on Cargo
Vans/Passenger Vans: pull restraining
cable 0043down a little and remove it from
retainer 0044.
X Remove the chock.
i When stowing the wheel chock, make
sure that restraining cable 0043is holding it
securely in retainer 0044. Wheel chock to the rear of the chassis on the left
side of the vehicle (example) X
To remove the wheel chock on Cab
Chassis: pull the locking springs down and
remove the wheel chock.
i When stowing the wheel chock, make
sure that it is secured in the retainer with
the locking springs. Parking the vehicle for a long period
If you park your vehicle for longer than
three weeks: R connect the batteries to a trickle charger or
R disconnect the vehicle's starter battery or
R switch off the electrical system using the
battery main switch (Y page 137) and
R disconnect the vehicle's auxiliary battery
Otherwise, you need to check the battery's
condition of charge every three weeks, since standby power consumption can drain the
battery. If the battery voltage is lower than
12.2 V,the battery must be charged. Other-
wise, the battery may be damaged by exhaus-
tive discharging.
Be sure to observe the notes on disconnect-
ing and charging the batteries under "Bat-
tery“ (Y page 258). You can obtain informa-
tion about trickle chargers from a qualified
specialist workshop.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than
6 weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as a result of lack of use. In this event, consult a

Be sure to observe the notes on charging
the batteries (Y
page 263). Installation locations
Your vehicle may be equipped with three bat-
teries, depending on the equipment version:
R a starter battery in the battery case in the
driver's footwell
R additional battery in the engine compart-
ment
R auxiliary battery under the driver's seat
Have the auxiliary battery removed at a quali-
fied specialist workshop. Installing/removing the floor cover-
ing (starter battery) G
WARNING
Objects in the driver's footwell can restrict the pedal travel or obstruct a depressed pedal.
The operating and road safety of the vehicle is
jeopardized. There is a risk of an accident.
Make sure that all objects in the vehicle are
stowed correctly, and that they cannot enter
the driver's footwell. Install the floormats
securely and as specified in order to ensure
sufficient clearance for the pedals. Do not use loose floormats and do not place floormats on
top of one another. X
Switch off all electrical consumers.
X To remove: remove screws 0087and take off
trim 0044. X
Remove floor covering 0043.
X To install: place floor covering 0043in the
driver's footwell.
X Slide floor covering 0043underneath the car-
rier of the accelerator pedal and align it at
the base of the driver's seat and at the door sill.
Make sure that the floor covering does notobstruct the accelerator pedal.
X Put trim 0044in place and screw screws 0087
back in. Disconnecting/connecting the
starter battery

WARNING
During the charging process, a battery produ- ces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs or
sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can
ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
R Make sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into con-
tact with vehicle parts.
R Never place metal objects or tools on a bat-
tery.
R It is important that you observe the descri-
bed order of the battery terminals when
connecting and disconnecting a battery.
R When jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
R It is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and dis-
connecting the jumper cables.
R Never connect or disconnect the battery
terminals while the engine is running.
Disconnecting the starter battery !
Switch off the engine and remove the key
from the ignition lock before you loosen or
disconnect the terminal clamps. You may 260
