XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far as
it will go to position 1.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Make sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked.
X Insert the mechanical key into the Smart-
Key ( Y page 80).
iIf you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.

rear when opened. Therefore, make sure that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the load-
ing guidelines ( Y page 274).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo com- partment. You could otherwise lock yourself
out.
Vehicles without the EASY-PACK tailgate:
the tailgate can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R unlocked from inside with the mechanical
key
For vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate you can:
R open and close the tailgate manually from
outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
R limit the opening angle of the tailgate
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
mechanical key
Tailgate reversing feature
The tailgate is equipped with an automatic
reversing feature. It reacts if a solid object
obstructs or restricts the tailgate during the
closing procedure. The tailgate opens again
automatically. The automatic reversing fea-
ture is however only an aid and is not a sub-
stitute for your attentiveness when closing
the cargo compartment.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
R to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fin-
gers
R over the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement

This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these sit-
uations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:R press the F button on the SmartKey, or
R pull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door or
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate or
R pull the handle on the tailgate

Vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate: if
you pull handle : and keep it in this position,
you can open the tailgate manually. If you
release the handle, the tailgate opens auto-

X Pull the tailgate down using recess :.
X Push the tailgate closed from outside the
vehicle.
X If necessary, lock the vehicle with the &
button on the SmartKey ( Y page 78) or with
KEYLESS-GO ( Y page 79).
iIf a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock.

matic door function if you have stopped the
tailgate in an intermediate position.
X Press and hold the F button on the

and let it go again immediately.
iYou can also close the tailgate manually if
it is fully opened.
! If you have opened the tailgate automat-
ically, you should wait a moment before

Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate
Important safety notes
You can limit the opening angle of the tail-
gate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 8 in
(20 cm) before the stop.
This could be useful, for example, if there is
insufficient space above the tailgate.
! Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angleoutside.
Arming
X To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedure at the
desired position: press the closing button

on the outside of the tailgate again.
X To store the position: press and hold the
closing button in the tailgate until you hear a short tone.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored positionwhen opening.
iTo open the tailgate fully, pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again after it
has stopped automatically. This does not
delete the stored position.
Deactivating
X Press and hold the closing button
(Y page 88) in the tailgate until you hear
two short tones.
Tailgate emergency release

! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and behind the tailgate.
If the tailgate can no longer be opened from
outside the vehicle, use the emergency
release on the inside of the tailgate.

Side windows

While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side win- dow and the door frame as the side window
moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side win-
dow during the opening procedure. If some-
body becomes trapped, release the switch or pull the switch to close the side window again.

While opening the side windows, body parts in
the closing area could become trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or press the switch down to open the
side window again.
GWARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear side
windows. When leaving the vehicle, always
take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehi-
cle. Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle.

Replacing the wiper blades
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If the windshield wipers begin to move while
you are changing the wiper blades, you could be trapped by the wiper arm. There is a risk of
injury.
Always switch off the windshield wipers and
ignition before changing the wiper blades.
! Never open the hood/tailgate if a wiper
arm has been folded away from the wind-
shield/rear window.
Never fold a windshield wiper arm without a
wiper blade back onto the windshield/rear window. Hold the windshield wiper arm firmly when
you change the wiper blade. If you release
the wiper arm without a wiper blade and it
falls onto the windshield/rear window, the
windshield/rear window may be damaged
by the force of the impact.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the wiper blades changed at a qualified
specialist workshop.
! To avoid damaging the wiper blades,
make sure that you touch only the wiper
arm of the wiper.

X Remove the SmartKey from the ignition
lock or turn it to position 0 (KEYLESS-GO)
( Y page 149).
X Fold the wiper arm away from the wind-
shield until it engages.
XFirmly press release knob : and pull the
wiper blade upwards from the wiper arm in the direction of the arrow.
Installing the wiper blades
X Position the new wiper blade in the retainer
on the wiper arm and slide it into place in
the opposite direction to the arrow.
The wiper blade audibly engages.
X Make sure that the wiper blade is seated
correctly.
X Fold the wiper arm back onto the wind-
shield.

When the DEF supply drops to a minimum, the
Remaining Starts: 16 message is shown
in the multifunction display.
If the
Remaining Starts: 16 message
appears in the multifunction display, you can start the engine another 16 times. If DEF is
not refilled, you will subsequently be unable
to start the engine . Refill the DEF tank with
around 1 gal (3.8 l) of DEF or have the DEF
tank refilled at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
Use the special DEF refill bottle when adding DEF between maintenance intervals. Contact
a qualified specialist workshop with any ques-
tions or, if necessary, contact Roadside Assis- tance ( Y page 24).
If the outside temperature is below 12 ‡
( Ò 11 †) it may be difficult to top up. If DEF is
frozen and there is an active warning indica-
tor, it may not be possible to add DEF. Park
the vehicle in a warmer place, e.g. in a garage,
until DEF has become fluid again. It will then
be possible to add DEF again. Alternatively,
have the DEF tank refilled at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop.

gas aftertreatment and DEF is available at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
Important safety notes
DEF is a water-soluble fluid for the exhaust
gas aftertreatment of diesel engines. It is:
R not poisonous
R colorless and odorless
R not flammable
When you open the DEF container, small
amounts of ammonia vapor may be released. Ammonia vapors have a pungent odor and are
particularly irritating to the skin, to mucous
membranes and to the eyes. You may expe-
rience a burning sensation in your eyes, nose and throat. Coughing and watering of the
eyes are possible. Do not inhale ammonia vapors. Fill the DEF
tank only in well-ventilated areas.
DEF must not come into contact with your
skin, eyes or clothing and must not be swal-
lowed. Keep DEF away from children.
If you or other persons come into contact with
DEF, observe the following:
R Rinse DEF from your skin immediately with
soap and water.
R If DEF comes into contact with your eyes,
immediately rinse them thoroughly with
clean water. Seek medical assistance with-
out delay.
R If DEF has been swallowed, rinse your
mouth out immediately. Drink plenty of
water. Seek medical assistance without
delay.
R Change out of clothing contaminated with
DEF immediately.
! Only use DEF in accordance with
ISO 22241. Do not mix any additives with
DEF, and do not dilute DEF with water. This
may destroy the BlueTEC exhaust gas after- treatment system.
! Rinse surfaces that have come into con-
tact with DEF immediately with water or
remove DEF using a damp cloth and cold
water. If the DEF has already crystallized,
use a sponge and cold water to clean it. DEF
residues crystallize after time and contam-
inate the affected surfaces.
! DEF is not a fuel additive and must not be
added to the fuel tank. If DEF is added to
the fuel tank, this can lead to engine dam-
age.
! Only screw on the DEF refill bottle hand-
tight. It could otherwise be damaged.
The DEF filler neck is under the cargo com-
partment floor.
X Switch the ignition off.
X Open the tailgate.
X Lift up the cargo compartment floor
(Y page 314).

XTurn DEF cap : counter-clockwise and
remove it.
X Turn DEF filler cap ; counter-clockwise
and open it.
Filler cap ; is secured with a plastic strip.

Unscrew the protective cap from DEF refill
bottle =.
X Place DEF refill bottle = on the filler neck
as shown and screw it on clockwise until
hand-tight.
X Press DEF refill bottle = downward.
The DEF tank is filled. This may take up to
one minute.
iTo top up between service intervals, fill
the DEF tank with approximately 1 gal
(3.8 l) of DEF. 1 gal (3.8 l) DEF is equivalent
to approximately 2 DEF refill bottles. Then
have the DEF supply checked at a qualified specialist workshop and completely refilled
if necessary.
X Release DEF refill bottle =.
When DEF refill bottle = is no longer
pressed down, filling stops. DEF refill bottle = can be removed when it has been only
partially emptied.
X Turn DEF refill bottle = counter-clockwise
and remove it.
X Place DEF filler cap ; on the filler neck and
turn it clockwise.
X Replace DEF cover : as shown and turn it
clockwise as far as it will go.
X Fold the cargo compartment floor down.
X Close the tailgate.
X Drive faster than 10 mph (16 km/h).
