Parking
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If you leave children unsupervised in the vehi-
cle, they could set it in motion by, for example:
R release the parking brake.
R shift the automatic transmission out of the
parking position P.
R start the engine.
In addition, they may operate vehicle equip-
ment and become trapped. There is a risk of
an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
GWARNING
Flammable material such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite if they come into contact withhot parts of the exhaust system or exhaust
gas flow. There is a risk of fire.
Park the vehicle so that no flammable mate-
rials come into contact with parts of the vehi- cle which are hot. Take particular care not to
park on dry grassland or harvested grainfields.

Make sure that the following values are not exceeded:
R the permissible trailer drawbar noseweight
R the permissible trailer load
R the permissible rear axle load of the towing
vehicle
R the maximum permissible gross vehicle
weight of both the towing vehicle and thetrailer
When towing a trailer, your vehicle's handling
characteristics will be different in comparison with when driving without a trailer.
The vehicle/trailer combination:
R is heavier
R is restricted in its acceleration and gradi-
ent-climbing capability
R has an increased braking distance
R is affected more by strong crosswinds
R demands more sensitive steering
R has a larger turning radius
This could impair the handling characteris-
tics. Adapt your driving style accordingly.
Maintain a safe distance. Drive carefully.
When towing a trailer, always adjust your
speed to the current road and weather con-
ditions. Do not exceed the maximum permis- sible speed for your vehicle/trailer combina-tion.
You will find the values approved by the man-
ufacturer on the vehicle identification plates
and those for the towing vehicle in the "Tech- nical data" section ( Ypage 268).
Driving tips
X
On long and steep downhill gradients,
select shift range 1,2 or 3(Y page 107) in
good time.
iThis also applies if you have activated
cruise control or SPEEDTRONIC.
X If necessary, shift the transfer case to LOW
RANGE (Y page 132).
This will use the braking effect of the
engine, so that less braking will be required to maintain the speed. This relieves the
load on the brake system and prevents the
brakes from overheating and wearing too
quickly. If you need additional braking,
depress the brake pedal repeatedly rather
than continuously.
The maximum permissible speed for vehicle/
trailer combinations depends on the type of
trailer. Before beginning the journey, check
the trailer's documents to see what the max- imum permissible speed is. Observe the
legally prescribed maximum speed in the rel-evant country.
For certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the max-
imum permissible rear axle load is increased
when towing a trailer. Refer to the "Technical
data" section to find out whether this applies to your vehicle. If you utilize any of the added
maximum rear axle load when towing a trailer, the vehicle/trailer combination may not
exceed a maximum speed of 60 mph
(100 km/h) for reasons concerning the oper-ating permit. This also applies in countries in
which the permissible maximum speed for
vehicle/trailer combinations is above 60 mph (100 km/h).
When towing a trailer, your vehicle's handling
characteristics will be different in comparison
to when driving without a trailer and it will
consume more fuel.

Loading guidelines
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury, particu-
larly in the event of sudden braking or a sud-
den change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
GWARNING
If you distribute the load unevenly in the vehi- cle, the handling as well as the steering and
braking characteristics are severely affected.
There is a risk of an accident.
Distribute the load evenly in the vehicle.
Secure the load to prevent it from slipping.
GWARNING
The exhaust tail pipe and tail pipe trim can
become very hot. If you come into contact
with these parts of the vehicle, you could burn
yourself. There is a risk of injury.
Always be particularly careful around the
exhaust tail pipe and the tail pipe trim. Allow
these components to cool down before touch-
ing them.
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tail-
gate/rear door is open when the engine is
running, particularly if the vehicle is moving,
exhaust fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the tail-
gate/rear door. Never drive off with the tail-
gate/rear door open.
Driving, braking and steering characteristics
change depending on:
R type of load
R weight
R the center of gravity of the load
You should therefore load your vehicle as
shown in the illustrations.
The gross vehicle weight (GVW) is the vehicle
weight including fuel, vehicle tool kit, spare
wheel, accessories installed, vehicle occu-
pants and luggage/load.
Do not exceed the load limit or permitted
gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) for your
vehicle. The gross load limit and the GVWR
are specified on the vehicle identification
plate on the B-pillar of the driver's door( Y page 258).
The load must also be distributed so that the weight on each axle never exceeds the grossaxle weight rating (GAWR) for the front and
rear axles. The specifications for GVWR and
GAWR are on the vehicle identification plate
on the B-pillar of the driver's door( Y page 258).

Roadside Assistance button
XOpen the stowage compartment under the
armrest ( Ypage 193).
X Press Roadside Assistance button :for
more than two seconds.
A call to a Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assis-
tance Representative is initiated. Indicator
lamp ;in Roadside Assistance button :
flashes while the call is active. The
ConZ
necting Callmessage appears in the
multifunction display and COMAND is
muted.
If a connection can be made, the
Call ConZ
nectedmessage appears in the multifunction
display.
If a mobile phone network is available and
there is sufficient GPS reception, the mbrace
system transmits data to the Response Cen-
ter, for example:
R current location of the vehicle
R vehicle identification number
R vehicle model
R vehicle color
iThe COMAND display shows that an
mbrace call is active. You can change to the navigation menu by pressing the NAVI but-
ton on COMAND during the call. Voice out- put is not available.
A voice connection is established between
the Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance
Representative and the vehicle occupants. The Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance
Representative either sends a qualified
Mercedes-Benz technician or makes arrange-
ments for your vehicle to be transported to
the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter. You may be charged for services such as
repair work and/or towing. Further details
are available in your mbrace manual.
X Describe the type of assistance needed.
iIf the indicator lamp in Roadside Assis-
tance button :is flashing continuously
and no voice connection with the Response center has been established, then the
mbrace system has not been able to initiate
a Roadside Assistance call (e.g. the rele-
vant mobile phone network is not availa-
ble). The
CallFailedmessage appears in
the multifunction display.
X To end a call: press the~button on the
multifunction steering wheel.

X Press the corresponding COMAND button
to end a phone call.
iSign and drive services 2
: you are not
charged for services such as jump-starting,
providing a few gallons of fuel for a fuel tank that has been run dry or changing a faulty

Engine compartment
Hood
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If the hood is unlatched, it may open up when the vehicle is in motion and block your view.
There is a risk of an accident.
Never unlatch the hood while driving. Before
every trip, ensure that the hood is locked.
GWARNING
Certain components in the engine compart-
ment may be very hot, e.g. the drive system
and radiator. Working in the engine compart-
ment poses a risk of injury.
If possible, let the drive system cool down andonly touch the components described in the following.
GWARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is over-
heated or when there is a fire in the engine
compartment could expose you to hot gases
or other service products. There is a risk of
injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there is a fire in the
engine compartment, keep the hood closed
and contact the fire department.
GWARNING
The ignition system and the fuel injection sys-tem work under high voltage. If you touch
components which are under voltage, you
could get an electric shock. There is a risk of
injury.
Never touch components of the ignition sys-
tem or fuel injection system when the ignition is switched on.
GWARNING
The engine compartment contains moving
components. Certain components, such as
the radiator fan, may continue to run or start
again suddenly when the ignition is off. There is a risk of injury.
If you need to do any work inside the engine
compartment:
R switch off the ignition
R never reach into the area where there is a
risk of danger from moving components,
such as the fan rotation area
R remove jewelry and watches
R keep items of clothing and hair, for exam-
ple, away from moving parts
GWARNING
When the hood is open and the windshield
wipers are set in motion, you can be injured by
the wiper linkage. There is a risk of injury.
Always switch off the windshield wipers and
the ignition before opening the hood.
!Make sure that the windshield wipers are
not folded away from the windshield. You
could otherwise damage the windshield
wipers or the hood.
Do not touch the following when the ignition
is switched on: R ignition coils
R spark plug connectors
R test socket

Maintaining the time-dependent service schedule:X Before disconnecting the battery, note
down the service due date displayed.
or X After reconnecting the battery, subtract
the battery disconnection periods from the
service date shown on the display.
iThe service interval display should not be
confused with the 4engine oil level dis-

The symbol and the letter indicate which type

The ASSYST service interval display does not
take into account any periods of time during
which the battery is disconnected.
Hiding a service message
X To hide the service message, press the % back button on the multifunction
steering wheel ( Ypage 35).
Displaying service messages
Use the buttons on the multifunction steering
wheel.
X Switch on the ignition.
X Press =or; to select the standard
display menu on the steering wheel
( Y page 147).
X Press 9or: to select the service
interval display. The ¯ or± service symbol and the
service due date are displayed.
Points to remember
The specified maintenance interval takes only the normal operation of the vehicle into
account. Under arduous operating conditions
or increased load on the vehicle, mainte-
nance work must be carried out more fre-
quently, for example: R regular city driving with frequent intermedi-
ate stops
R if the vehicle is primarily used to travel
short distances
R use in mountainous terrain or on poor road
surfaces
R if the engine is often left idling for long peri-
ods
Under these or similar conditions, have, for
example, the air filter, engine oil and oil filter
replaced or changed more frequently. Under
arduous operating conditions, the tires must
be checked more often. Further information
can be obtained at a qualified specialist work- shop, e.g. an authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter.
Fuel/water separator
HEnvironmental note
Dispose of service products in an environ-
mentally responsible manner.
!If you continue driving without having the
fuel/water separator serviced, this could
cause damage to the engine. Any resulting
damage is not covered by the warranty.
If the fuel/water separator needs servicing,
the following message appears in the multi-
function display:
You will also hear a brief warning tone.
