Introduction
General notes
Display messages appear in the multifunction display.
Display messages with graphic displays may be shown in simplified form in the Operator's
Manual and may therefore differ from the multifunction display.
Please respond in accordance with the display messages and follow the additional notes in this Operator's Manual.
Certain display messages are accompanied by an audible warning tone or a continuous tone.
When the ignition is switched off, all display messages are deleted, apart from some high-
priority display messages. Once the causes of the high-priority display messages have been
rectified, the corresponding display messages are also deleted.
When you stop and park the vehicle, please observe the notes on:
R HOLD function ( Ypage 170)
R Parking ( Ypage 152)
Hiding display messages
X
Press the aor% button on the steering wheel to hide the display message.
The display message is cleared.
The multifunction display shows high-priority display messages in red. Some high-priority dis- play messages cannot be hidden.
The multifunction display shows these messages continuously until the causes for the mes-
sages have been remedied.
Message memory
The on-board computer saves certain display messages in the message memory. You can call
up the display messages:
X Press the =or; button on the steering wheel to select the
Serv.menu.
If there are display messages, the multifunction display shows
2 Messages, for example.
X Press the 9or: button to select the entry, e.g.
2 Messages.
X Press ato confirm.
X Press the 9or: button to scroll through the display messages.

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), BAS (Brake Assist), ESP ®
(Elec-
tronic Stability Program), the HOLD function and hill start assist
are temporarily unavailable.
COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS may also have failed.
In addition, the !,÷ andå warning lamps may light up
in the instrument cluster.
ATTENTION ASSIST is deactivated.
Possible causes are: R self-diagnosis is not yet complete.
R the on-board voltage may be insufficient.
GWARNING
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. The wheels could therefore lock if you
brake hard, for example.
The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely affec-ted. The braking distance in an emergency braking situation can increase.
If ESP ®
is not operational, ESP ®
is unable to stabilize the vehicle.
There is an increased risk of skidding and an accident.
X Carefully drive a short distance on a suitable stretch of road,
making slight steering movements at a speed above 12 mph
(20 km/h).
If the display message disappears, the functions mentioned
above are available again.
If the display message continues to be displayed: X Drive on carefully.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop.

X Drive on carefully.

flashes and the yellow !warning lamp lights up.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.
To release:
X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Release the electric parking brake manually.
To apply: X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Apply the electric parking brake manually.
If the red F(USA only)/ !(Canada only) indicator lamp
continues to flash:
X Do not drive on.
X Secure the vehicle against rolling away ( Ypage 323).
X Shift the selector lever to position P.
X Turn the front wheels towards the curb.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
The yellow !warning lamp lights up. The red F(USA
only)/ !(Canada only) indicator lamp flashes for about ten
seconds after the electric parking brake has been applied or
released. It then goes out or remains lit.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning. X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Apply the electric parking brake.
If it is not possible to engage the electric parking brake:
X Shift the selector lever to position P.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop.
If it is not possible to release the electric parking brake manually:
X Release the electric parking brake automatically ( Ypage 153).
If the electric parking brake still cannot be released: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

The driver's door is open and the driver's seat belt has not been
fastened. X
Repeat the parking process with the seat belt fastened and the
driver's door closed.
You have inadvertently touched the multifunction steering wheel
while steering intervention was active.
X While steering intervention is active, make sure that the multi-
function steering wheel is not touched unintentionally.
The vehicle has started to skid and ESP ®
has intervened.
X Use Active Parking Assist again later ( Ypage 175).

You have just carried out a large number of turning or parking
maneuvers.
Active Parking Assist will become available again after approx-
imately ten minutes ( Ypage 175).
X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying
attention to road and traffic conditions.
X Switch off and restart the engine.
If the display message continues to be displayed: X Visit a qualified specialist workshop.
PARKTRONIC is defective.
X Visit a qualified specialist workshop.

The display message disappears automatically.

The tire pressure loss warning system has detected a significant
loss in pressure.
A warning tone also sounds.
Possible causes:
R you have changed the positions of the wheels and tires or instal-
led new wheels and tires.
R the tire pressure in one or more tires is not correct.
GWARNING
Tire pressures that are too low pose the following hazards:
R they may burst, especially as the load and vehicle speed
increase.
R they may wear excessively and/or unevenly, which may greatly
impair tire traction.
R the driving characteristics, as well as steering and braking, may
be greatly impaired.
There is a risk of an accident.
X Stop the vehicle without making any sudden steering or braking
maneuvers. Pay attention to the traffic conditions as you do so.
X Secure the vehicle against rolling away ( Ypage 152).
X Check the tires and, if necessary, follow the instructions for a
flat tire ( Ypage 284).
X Check the tire pressures and, if necessary, correct the tire pres-
sure.
X Restart the tire pressure loss warning system when the tire
pressure is correct ( Ypage 309).

Unavailable
4MATIC has overheated. The vehicle is only driven by the front
wheels. X Drive on.
The airflow cools 4MATIC more quickly.
When the display message goes out, 4MATIC is available again
and the vehicle is driven by all four wheels.
4matic Inoperative4MATIC is malfunctioning. The vehicle is only driven by the front

AThe tailgate is open.
GWARNING
When the engine is running, exhaust gases can enter the vehicle
interior if the tailgate is open.
There is a risk of poisoning.
X Close the tailgate.

A warning tone also sounds.

The open hood may block your view when the vehicle is in motion.
There is a risk of an accident.
X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying
