When Driving
Start/Stop Engine
NOTE
  If any one of the following operations is performed after the engine has been
automatically stopped (shift lever is in neutral position for vehicles with manual
transaxle), the engine will restart automatically even though the clutch pedal is not
depressed (manual transaxle) or the brake pedal is not released (automatic transaxle).
However, for safety reasons, if the shift lever is in a position other than neutral for
vehicles with manual transaxle, the engine will not restart automatically.
 


 The i-stop OFF switch is pressed for several seconds.



(Dual-zone automatic air-conditioning)
 The temperature setting dial of the air conditioning is set to maximum heating/
maximum cooling (A/C ON).
 


 The windscreen defroster switch is on.



(Except European model)
 The driver intends to get out of the vehicle (driver's seat belt is unfastened and any
door or the liftgate/boot lid is opened).
 


 The brakes are released slightly on a slope and the vehicle begins to move.

(Automatic transaxle)




 The accelerator pedal is depressed while the selector lever is in the D/M position
(not second gear fi xed mode).




 The selector lever is shifted to the R position.



 The selector lever is shifted from the N or P position to the D/M position (not second
gear fi xed mode).




 The steering wheel is operated with the selector lever in the D/M position (not
second gear fi xed mode).




 The selector lever is in the M position, second gear fi xed mode. 

 If any one of the following vehicle conditions occur after the engine has been
automatically stopped (shift lever is in neutral position for vehicles with manual
transaxle), the engine will restart automatically even though the clutch pedal is not
depressed (manual transaxle) or the brake pedal is not released (automatic transaxle).
However, for safety reasons, if the shift lever is in a position other than neutral for
vehicles with manual transaxle, the engine will not restart automatically.
 


(Dual-zone automatic air-conditioning)
 There is a large difference between the cabin temperature and the temperature set for
the air-conditioning system.
 


 Two minutes have elapsed since the i-stop function started operating.



 The battery power is depleted.

Start/Stop Engine
i-stop Warning Light (Amber)/i-stop Indicator Light (Green)
To ensure safe and comfortable use of the vehicle, the i-stop function constantly monitors
the driver's operations, the vehicle's interior and exterior environment, and the operational
status of the vehicle, and uses the i-stop warning light (amber) and i-stop indicator light
(green) to inform the driver of the operation status of the i-stop system or related warnings.
i-stop warning light (amber)
When illuminated
 




 This warning light stays on for a few seconds when the ignition is switched ON.



 The warning light illuminates when the i-stop OFF switch is pressed to turn the system
off.
 


 If any one of the following operations is performed after the engine has been
automatically stopped, the warning light illuminates. If this occurs, the engine does not
restart automatically for safety reasons, even if the clutch pedal is depressed (manual
transaxle) or the brake pedal is released (automatic transaxle). Use the standard engine
starting procedure to start the engine.
 

 
 The bonnet is opened.


 
(SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
 The driver intends to get out of the vehicle (driver's seat belt is unfastened and driver's
door is opened).
 


 If the i-stop warning light (amber) remains illuminated even after continuously pressing
the i-stop OFF switch under conditions other than when the bonnet is opened or the driver
has exited the vehicle (driver's seat belt is unfastened and driver's door is opened), consult
an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.
When fl ashing
The light fl ashes if there is any malfunction in the i-stop system. Consult an expert repairer,
we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.

When Driving
Transaxle
CAUTION

 Keep your foot off the clutch pedal
except when shifting gears. Also, do
not use the clutch to hold the vehicle
on an upgrade. Riding the clutch
will cause needless clutch wear and
damage.
  Do not apply any excessive lateral
force to the shift lever when
changing from 5th to 4th gear. This
could lead to the accidental selection
of 2nd gear, which can result in
damage to the transaxle.
  Make sure the vehicle comes to a
complete stop before shifting to R.
Shifting to R while the vehicle is still
moving may damage the transaxle.
NOTE
  For vehicles with type C instrument
cluster*1
 If the engine speed is about to exceed
the permissible engine speed, the
buzzer sounds.
 Refer to Over Rev. Buzzer on page
7-53 .
 To determine which instrument
cluster is equipped on your Mazda,
Refer to Meters and Gauges on page
4-24 .
  If shifting to R is diffi cult, shift back
into neutral, release the clutch pedal,
and try again.
NOTE
  (With i-stop function)  If the engine has stopped due to
stalling, it can be restarted by
depressing the clutch pedal within 3
seconds of the engine stopping.
 The engine cannot be restarted even
if the clutch pedal is depressed under
the following conditions:
 


 The driver's door is open. 


 The driver's seat belt is unfastened. 


 The clutch pedal is not released
completely after the engine stalled.
 

 The clutch pedal is depressed with
the engine not stopped completely.
Gear Shift Indication *
The gear shift indicator supports you to
obtain optimum fuel economy and smooth
driving. It displays the selected gear
position in the instrument cluster as well
as notifi es the driver to change to the most
suitable gear position corresponding to the
actual driving condition.

Once the fl exible maintenance is selected, the vehicle calculates the remaining oil life based on engine operating
conditions and lets you know when an oil change is due by illuminating the wrench mark in the instrument
cluster.
Replace the engine oil and fi lter when message/wrench mark is ON. And they must be changed at least once a
year or within 20,000 km (12,500 miles) since last engine oil and fi lter change.
The system must be reset whenever replacing the engine oil regardless of the message/wrench mark display.
