■Regenerative braking
In the following situations, kinetic energy is converted to electric energy and decel-
eration force can be obtained in conjunction with the recharging of the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery).
●The accelerator pedal is released while driving with the shift position in D or S.
●The brake pedal is depressed while driving with the shift position in D or S.
■EV indicator
■Conditions in which the gasoline engine may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and stops auto matically. However, it may not stop auto-
matically in the following conditions:
●During gasoline engine warm-up
●During hybrid battery (t raction battery) charging
●When the temperature of the hybrid battery (traction battery) is high or low
●When the heater is switched on
■Charging the hybrid battery (traction battery)
●As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery (traction battery), the battery
does not need to be charged from an outside source. However, if the vehicle is left
parked for a long time the hybrid battery will slowly discharge. For this reason, be
sure to drive the vehicle at least once every few months for at least 30 minutes or
10 miles (16 km). If the hybrid battery becomes fully discharged and you are unable
to jump-start the vehicle with the 12-v olt battery, contact your Lexus dealer.
●If the shift lever is in N, the hybrid ba ttery (traction battery) will not be charged.
Always put the shift lever in P when the vehicle is stopped. When driving in heavy
traffic, operate the vehicle with the shift le ver in D or S to avoid discharging the bat-
tery.
●To help prevent the 12-volt battery from becoming discharged, drive the vehicle at
least once a month, and operate the acces sories only when the “READY” indicator
is on. When parking the vehicle, make sure the doors and trunk are closed and all
lights are turned off.

is driven using only the electric motor (trac-
tion motor) or the gasoline engine is stopped.

■Hybrid System Indicator
●Hybrid System Indicator is displayed when the driving mode is other than the sport
mode.
●By keeping the indicator needle within Ec o area, more Eco-friendly driving can be
achieved.
●Charge area indicates regeneration* status. Regenerated energy will be used to
charge the battery.
*: When used in this manual, “regeneration” refers to the conversion of energy cre-
ated by the movement of the vehicle into electrical energy.
■ECO lamp and SPORT lamp
●When all of the following conditions are satisfied and Eco-friendly driving is being
performed, ECO lamp (blue) will illuminate. (ECO lamp will become brighter the
more Eco-friendly your driving is. Also, while the vehicle is stopped or the acceler-
ation exceeds Zone of Eco driving, ECO lamp turns off. ( P. 103) However, when
Eco drive mode is selected, while the vehicle is stopped or the acceleration
exceeds Zone of Eco driving, ECO lamp does not turn off.):
• Driving with the shift lever in D.
• Normal mode, comfort mode or Eco dr ive mode is selected, and EV drive
mode and snow mode is not in use.
• The vehicle speed is approximately 80 mph (130 km/h) or below.
●When sport mode is selected, SPORT lamp (red) will illuminate. Charge area

Hybrid Eco area
Shows that gasoline engine power is not
being used very often.
The gasoline engine will automatically stop
and restart under various conditions.

■Battery-saving function
In the following circumstances, the entry function is disabled in order to prevent the
12-volt battery from discharging and the electronic key battery from depleting.
●When the entry function has not been used for 30 days or more
●When the electronic key has been left within approximately 6 ft. (2 m) of the vehi-
cle for 10 minutes or more
The system will resume operation when
●The vehicle is locked using the door handle lock switch when carrying the elec-
tronic key on your person.
●The vehicle is locked/unlocked using the wireless remote control function.

■Electronic key battery depletion
●The standard battery life is 1 to 2 years. (The card key battery life is about a year and
a half.)
●If the battery is low, an alarm will sound in the cabin when the hybrid system is
started or stopped. ( P. 1 3 0 )
●The battery becomes depleted even if the electronic key is not used because the
key always receives radio waves. If the smart access system with push-button start
or the wireless remote control does not operate, or the detection area becomes
smaller, the battery may be depleted. Replace the battery when necessary.

●To avoid serious deterioration, do not leave the electronic key within 3 ft. (1 m) of
the following electrical appliances that produce a magnetic field:
•TVs
•Personal computers
• Cellular phones, cordless phones and battery chargers
• Recharging cellular phones or cordless phones
•Table lamps
• Induction cookers

■Before recharging
When recharging, the 12-volt battery prod uces hydrogen gas which is flammable
and explosive. Therefore, observe the following precautions before recharging:
●If recharging with the 12-volt battery installed on the vehicle, be sure to disconnect
the ground cable.
●Make sure the power switch on the charger is off when connecting and discon-
necting the charger cables to the 12-volt battery.
■After recharging/reconnecting the 12-volt battery
The hybrid system may not start. Follow one or both of the following procedures:
●After opening and closing the driver’s door, wait 10 seconds and then attempt to
start the hybrid system. (If the system does not start the first time, repeat the proce-
dure.)
●With the shift lever in P and the power switch off, open and close any door and then
attempt to start the hybrid system.
If the system will not start even after mult iple attempts at both methods, contact your
Lexus dealer.

CAUTION
■When replacing the 12-volt battery
Use a 12-volt battery designed for this vehicle. Failure to do so may cause gas
(hydrogen) to enter the passenger compartment, causing a fire or explosion.
For replacement of the 12-volt battery, contact your Lexus dealer.
NOTICE
■When recharging the 12-volt battery
Never recharge the 12-volt battery while th e hybrid system is operating. Also, be
sure all accessories are turned off.

The following warning indicates the possibility of damage to the vehicle
that may lead to an acc ident. Immediately stop th e vehicle in a safe place
and contact your Lexus dealer.
Failure to investigate the cause of th e following warnings may lead to the
system operating abnormally and possib ly cause an accident. Have the
vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer immediately.
