To cancel ESC operation,
press the ESC OFF button(ESC OFF indicator light illumi-nates).
If the ignition switch is placed to the LOCK/OFF position
when ESC is off, ESC remains
off. Upon restarting the engine,
the ESC will automatically turnon again.
Indicator lights
When the ignition switch is placed to the ON position, the ESC indicator light illu-
minates, then goes off if the ESC system
is operating normally.
The ESC indicator light blinks whenever
the ESC is operating.
If ESC indicator light stays on, your vehi-
cle may have a malfunction with the ESC
system. When this warning light illumi-
nates we recommend that the vehicle be
checked by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer as soon as possible. The ESC OFF indicator light comes on
when the ESC is turned off with the but-ton.

ESC OFF usage
When driving The ESC OFF mode should only be used
briefly to help free the vehicle if stuck in
snow or mud by temporarily stopping
operation of the ESC to maintain wheel
torque.
To turn ESC off while driving, press the
ESC OFF button while driving on a flat
road surface.✽✽
NOTICE
Turning the ESC OFF does not affect
ABS or standard brake system opera-
tion.
CAUTION
Driving with varying tire or wheel sizes may cause the ESC system to
malfunction. When replacing tires,make sure they are the same size asyour original tires for this vehicle.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to the transaxle:
Do not allow wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively while the
ESC, ABS, and brake warninglights are displayed. The repairswould not be covered by the vehi- cle warranty. Reduce engine
power and do not spin thewheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, ensure the ESC isturned off (ESC OFF light illumi- nated).
WARNING
When the ESC is blinking, this indi- cates the ESC is active:
Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to
accelerate. NEVER press the ESC
OFF button while the ESC indicator
light is blinking or you may lose
control of the vehicle resulting inan accident.

Avoid braking or gear changing in cor-
ners, especially when roads are wet.
Ideally, corners should always be taken
under gentle acceleration.Driving at night
Night driving presents more hazards
than driving in the daylight. Here are
some important tips to remember:
Slow down and keep more distance
between you and other vehicles, as it
may be more difficult to see at night,
especially in areas where there may
not be any street lights.
Adjust your mirrors to reduce the glare from other driver's headlights.
Keep your headlights clean and prop- erly aimed. Dirty or improperly aimed
headlights will make it much more diffi-cult to see at night.
Avoid staring directly at the headlights of oncoming vehicles. You could be
temporarily blinded, and it will take
several seconds for your eyes to read-
just to the darkness. Driving in the rain
Rain and wet roads can make driving
dangerous. Here are a few things to con-
sider when driving in the rain or on slick
pavement:
Slow down and allow extra following
distance. A heavy rainfall makes it harder to see and increases the dis-
tance needed to stop your vehicle.
Replace your windshield wiper blades when they show signs of streaking ormissing areas on the windshield.

Be sure your tires have enough tread.
If your tires do not have enough tread,
making a quick stop on wet pavement
can cause a skid and possibly lead to
an accident. See “Tire Tread” in chap-ter 7.
Turn on your headlights to make it eas- ier for others to see you.
Driving too fast through large puddles can affect your brakes. If you must go
through puddles, try to drive through
them slowly.
If you believe your brakes may be wet, apply them lightly while driving until
normal braking operation returns.Hydroplaning
If the road is wet enough and you are
going fast enough, your vehicle may have
little or no contact with the road surface
and actually ride on the water. The best
advice is SLOW DOWN when the road is
wet. The risk of hydroplaning increases
as the depth of tire tread decreases, refer
to “Tire Tread” in chapter 7. Driving in flooded areas
Avoid driving through flooded areas
unless you are sure the water is no high-
er than the bottom of the wheel hub.
Drive through any water slowly. Allowadequate stopping distance because
brake performance may be reduced.
After driving through water, dry the
brakes by gently applying them several
times while the vehicle is moving slowly.

ROAD WARNING
Hazard warning flasher
The hazard warning flasher serves as a
warning to other drivers to exercise
extreme caution when approaching,
overtaking, or passing your vehicle. It should be used whenever emergency
repairs are being made or when the vehi-cle is stopped near the edge of a road-
way.
To turn the hazard warning flasher on or
off, press the hazard warning flasher but-
ton with the ignition switch in any posi-
tion. The button is located in the center
console switch panel. All turn signal
lights will flash simultaneously.
• The hazard warning flasher operates
whether your vehicle is running or not.
The turn signals do not work when the hazard flasher is on. If the engine stalls at a crossroad
or crossing
If the engine stalls at a crossroad or
crossing, set the shift lever in the N
(Neutral) position and then push the
vehicle to a safe place.
If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with a ignition lock
switch, the vehicle can move forward
by shifting to the 2(second) or 3(third)
gear and then turning the starter with-out depressing the clutch pedal.
If you have a flat tire while driving
If a tire goes flat while you are driving:
1. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal and let the vehicle slow down while
driving straight ahead. Do not apply the
brakes immediately or attempt to pull
off the road as this may cause a loss of
control. When the vehicle has slowed
to such a speed that it is safe to do so,
brake carefully and pull off the road.
Drive off the road as far as possible
and park on a firm level ground. If you
are on a divided highway, do not park
in the median area between the two

Jump starting procedure
1. Position the vehicles close enough that the jumper cables will reach, but do not
allow the vehicles to touch.
2. Avoid fans or any moving parts in the engine compartment at all times, even
when the vehicles are turned off.
3. Turn off all electrical devices such as radios, lights, air conditioning, etc. Put
the vehicles in P (Park, for automatic
transaxle vehicle) or neutral (for manu-
al transaxle vehicle), and set the park-
ing brakes. Turn both vehicles OFF.
4. Connect the jumper cables in the exactsequence shown in the illustration.
First connect one jumper cable to the
red, positive (+) jumper terminal of
your vehicle (1).
5. Connect the other end of the jumper cable to the red, positive (+)
battery/jumper terminal of the assisting
vehicle (2).
6. Connect the second jumper cable to the black, negative (-) battery/chassis
ground of the assisting vehicle (3).CAUTION
To prevent damage to your vehicle:
Only use a 12-volt power supply (battery or jumper system) to
jump start your vehicle.
Do not attempt to jump start your vehicle by push-starting.

Maintenance
At least monthly:
Check the coolant level in the enginecoolant reservoir.
Check the operation of all exterior lights, including the stoplights, turn sig-
nals and hazard warning flashers.
Check the inflation pressures of all tires including the spare.
At least twice a year
(i.e., every Spring and Fall):
Check the radiator, heater and air con- ditioning hoses for leaks or damage.
Check the windshield washer spray and wiper operation. Clean the wiper
blades with clean cloth dampened with
washer fluid.
Check the headlight alignment.
Check the muffler, exhaust pipes, shields and clamps.
Check the lap/shoulder belts for wear and function.
Check for worn tires and loose wheel lug nuts.
At least once a year:
Clean the body and door drain holes.
Lubricate the door hinges and checks,and hood hinges.
Lubricate the door and hood locks and latches.
Lubricate the door rubber weather- strips.
Check the air conditioning system.
Inspect and lubricate the automatic transaxle linkage and controls.
Clean the battery and terminals.
Check the brake (and clutch) fluid level.

Your vehicle has a maintenance-free,
calcium-based battery.
If the battery becomes discharged in a
short time (because, for example, the
headlights or interior lights were left on
while the vehicle was not in use),
recharge it by slow charging (trickle)
for 10 hours.
If the battery gradually discharges because of high electric load while the
vehicle is being used, recharge it at 20-
30A for two hours.
