Engine Oil Pressure Gauge
Indicates engine oil pressure. The needleshould stay in the normal operating range(between L and H). If the needle fallsbelow the normal range, stop the vehicle,turn off the engine and check the engineoil level. Add oil if needed. If the oil level iscorrect, have your vehicle checked by yourauthorized dealer.
Engine Coolant TemperatureGauge
WARNING
Never remove the coolant reservoircap while the engine is running or hot.
Indicates engine coolant temperature. Atnormal operating temperature, the levelindicator will be in the normal range. If theengine coolant temperature exceeds thenormal range, stop the vehicle as soon assafely possible, switch off the engine andlet the engine cool.
Transmission Fluid TemperatureGauge
Indicates transmission fluid temperature.At normal operating temperature, the levelindicator will be in the normal range. If thetransmission fluid temperature exceedsthe normal range, stop the vehicle as soonas safely possible and verify the airflow isnot restricted such as snow or debrisblocking airflow through the grill. Also,higher than normal operating temperaturecan be caused by special operationconditions (i.e. snowplowing, towing oroff-road use). Refer to Special operatingconditions in the scheduled maintenanceinformation for instructions. Operating the
transmission for extended periods of timewith the gauge in the higher than normalarea may cause internal transmissiondamage. Altering the severity of the drivingconditions is recommended to lower thetransmission temperature into the normalrange. If the gauge continues to show hightemperatures, see your authorized dealer.
Fuel Gauge
Note:The fuel gauge may vary slightlywhen your vehicle is moving or on a gradient.
Switch the ignition on. The fuel gauge willindicate approximately how much fuel isleft in the fuel tank. The arrow adjacent tothe fuel pump symbol indicates on whichside of your vehicle the fuel filler door islocated.
The needle should move toward F whenyou refuel your vehicle. If the needle pointsto E after adding fuel, this indicates yourvehicle needs service soon.
After refueling some variability in needleposition is normal:
•It may take a short time for the needleto reach F after leaving the gas station.This is normal and depends upon theslope of pavement at the gas station.
•The fuel amount dispensed into thetank is a little less or more than thegauge indicated. This is normal anddepends upon the slope of pavementat the gas station.
•If the gas station nozzle shuts offbefore the tank is full, try a differentgas pump nozzle.
Low Fuel Reminder
A low fuel reminder triggers when the fuelgauge needle is at 1/16th.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNINGS
Do not overfill the fuel tank. Thepressure in an overfilled tank maycause leakage and lead to fuel sprayand fire.
The fuel system may be underpressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler door, do not refueluntil the sound stops. Otherwise, fuel mayspray out, which could cause seriouspersonal injury.
Automotive fuels can cause seriousinjury or death if you misuse ormishandle them.
Fuel ethanol and gasoline maycontain benzene, which is acancer-causing agent.
When refueling always shut theengine off and never allow sparks oropen flames near the filler neck.Never smoke or use a cell phone whilerefueling. Fuel vapor is extremelyhazardous under certain conditions. Avoidinhaling excess fumes.
The flow of fuel through a fuel pumpnozzle can produce static electricity,which can cause a fire if you pumpfuel into an ungrounded fuel container.
Observe the following guidelines whenhandling automotive fuel:
•Extinguish all smoking materials andany open flames before refueling yourvehicle.
•Automotive fuels can be harmful orfatal if swallowed. Fuel such asgasoline is highly toxic and ifswallowed can cause death orpermanent injury. If swallowed, call aphysician immediately, even if nosymptoms are immediately apparent.The toxic effects of fuel may not bevisible for hours.
•Avoid inhaling fuel vapors. Inhaling toomuch fuel vapor of any kind can leadto eye and respiratory tract irritation.In severe cases, excessive or prolongedbreathing of fuel vapor can causeserious illness and permanent injury.
•Avoid getting fuel liquid in your eyes. Ifyou splash fuel in your eyes, removecontact lenses (if worn), flush withwater for 15 minutes and seek medicalattention. Failure to seek propermedical attention could lead topermanent injury.
•Fuels can also be harmful if absorbedthrough the skin. If you splash fuel onyour skin, clothing or both, promptlyremove contaminated clothing andwash your skin thoroughly with soapand water. Repeated or prolonged skincontact with fuel liquid or vapor causesskin irritation.
•Be particularly careful if you are taking“Antabuse” or other forms of disulfiramfor the treatment of alcoholism.Breathing gasoline vapors, or skincontact could cause an adversereaction. In sensitive individuals, seriouspersonal injury or sickness may result.If you splash fuel on your skin, promptlywash your skin thoroughly with soapand water. Consult a physicianimmediately if you experience anadverse reaction.

We recommend regular unleaded gasolinewith a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.Some stations offer fuels posted as regularwith an octane rating below 87, particularlyin high altitude areas. We do notrecommend fuels with an octane ratingbelow 87.
Do not be concerned if your enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if itknocks heavily under most drivingconditions while you are using fuel with therecommended octane rating, see yourauthorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Avoid running out of fuel because thissituation may have an adverse effect onpowertrain components.
If you have run out of fuel:
•You may need to cycle the ignition fromoff to on several times after refuelingto allow the fuel system to pump thefuel from the tank to the engine. Onrestarting, cranking time will take a fewseconds longer than normal. Withkeyless ignition, just start the engine.Crank time will be longer than usual.
•Normally, adding 1 gallon (3.8 liters) offuel is enough to restart the engine. Ifthe vehicle is out of fuel and on a steepgrade, more than 1 gallon (3.8 liters)may be required.
•The service engine soon indicator maycome on. For more information on theservice engine soon indicator, SeeWarning Lamps and Indicators(page 77).
Refilling With a Portable FuelContainer
WARNINGS
The fuel system may be underpressure. If the fuel filler cap isventing vapor or if you hear a hissingsound, wait until it stops before completelyremoving the fuel filler cap. Otherwise, fuelmay spray out and cause personal injury.
Do not try to pry open or push openthe fuel system with foreign objects.This could damage the fuel systemand its seal and cause personal injury toyou or others.
Use the following directions when fillingfrom a portable fuel container:
1.Remove the fuel cap from the fuel fillerpipe by rotating it counter clockwise.
2.Slowly insert the portable fuelcontainer into the fuel filler opening.
3.Fill the vehicle with fuel from theportable fuel container.
4.4. When done, remove the portablefuel container nozzle and reinstall fuelcap. Insert fuel cap into fuel filleropening and turn clockwise until a clickis heard.
REFUELING
WARNINGS
Fuel vapor burns violently and a fuelfire can cause severe injuries.
Read and follow all the instructionson the pump island.
Turn off your engine when you arerefueling.
Do not smoke if you are near fuel orrefueling your vehicle.

WARNINGS
Keep sparks, flames and smokingmaterials away from fuel.
Stay outside your vehicle and do notleave the fuel pump unattendedwhen refueling your vehicle. This isagainst the law in some places.
Keep children away from the fuelpump; never let children pump fuel.
Do not use personal electronicdevices while refueling.
Use the following guidelines to avoidelectrostatic charge build-up when fillingan ungrounded fuel container:
•Place approved fuel container on theground.
•Do not fill a fuel container while it is inthe vehicle (including the cargo area).
•Keep the fuel pump nozzle in contactwith the fuel container while filling.
•Do not use a device that would holdthe fuel pump handle in the fill position.
Fuel Filler Cap
WARNINGS
The fuel system may be underpressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler door, do not refueluntil the sound stops. Otherwise, fuel mayspray out, which could cause seriouspersonal injury.
If you do not use the proper fuel fillercap, excessive pressure or vacuumin the fuel tank may damage the fuelsystem or cause the fuel cap to disengagein a collision, which may result in possiblepersonal injury.
Note:If you must replace the fuel filler cap,replace it with a fuel filler cap that isdesigned for your vehicle. The customerwarranty may be void for any damage to thefuel tank or fuel system if the correctgenuine Ford, Motorcraft® or other certifiedfuel filler cap is not used.
Your fuel tank filler cap has an indexeddesign with a 1/4th turn on and off feature.When fueling your vehicle:
1.Put the vehicle in P (Park).
2.Turn the engine off.
3.Carefully turn the filler capcounterclockwise until it spins off.
4.Pull to remove the cap from the fuelfiller pipe.
5.To install the cap, align the tabs on thecap with the notches on the filler pipe.
6.Turn the filler cap clockwise 1/4 of aturn clockwise until it clicks at leastonce.
If the Check Fuel Cap light or a Check FuelCap message appears in the instrumentcluster and stays on after you start theengine, the fuel filler cap may not beproperly installed.
If the fuel cap light remains on, at the nextopportunity, safely pull off of the road,remove the fuel filler cap, align the capproperly and reinstall it. The check fuel caplight or Check fuel cap message may notreset immediately; it may take severaldriving cycles for the indicators to turn off.A driving cycle consists of an enginestart-up (after four or more hours with theengine off) followed by normal city andhighway driving.

HAZARD WARNING FLASHERS
Note:The hazard warning flashers willoperate when the ignition is in any positionor if the key is not in the ignition. If usedwhen the engine is not running, the batterywill lose charge. As a result, there may beinsufficient power to restart your engine.
In some models, the hazardflasher control is located on theinstrument panel.
In other models, this feature is located onthe steering column, just behind thesteering wheel.
Use your hazard warning flashers whenyour vehicle is creating a safety hazard forother motorists.
•Press the flasher control and all frontand rear direction indicators flash.
•Press the flasher control again to turnthem off.
FUEL SHUTOFF
WARNING
Failure to inspect and, if necessary,repair fuel leaks after a collision mayincrease the risk of fire and seriousinjury. Ford Motor Company recommendsthat the fuel system be inspected by anauthorized dealer after any collision.
In the event of a moderate to severecollision, this vehicle is equipped with afuel pump shut-off feature that stops theflow of fuel to the engine. Not every impactwill cause a shut-off.
Should your vehicle shut off after acollision, you may restart your vehicle. Forvehicles equipped with a key system:
1.Switch off the ignition.
2.Switch on the ignition.
3.Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to re-enable thefuel pump.
For vehicles equipped with a push buttonstart system:
1.Press the START/STOP button toswitch off the ignition.
2.Press the brake pedal and press theSTART/STOP button to start thevehicle.
3.Remove your foot from the brake pedaland press the START/STOP buttonto switch off the ignition.
4.You can either attempt to start theengine by pressing the brake pedal andthe START/STOP button, or switchon the ignition only by pressing theSTART/STOP button withoutpressing the brake pedal. Both waysre-enable the fuel system.
Note:When you try to restart your vehicleafter a fuel shutoff, the vehicle makes surethat various systems are safe to restart.Once your vehicle determines that thesystems are safe, then the vehicle will allowyou to restart.
Note:In the event that your vehicle doesnot restart after your third attempt, contactan authorized dealer.
