Refuelling procedure
"'Insert the fuel nozz le from the gasoline
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
"' Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
noz zle switches off automatically when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
"'After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
"' Close the fuel filler flap .
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and comp letely. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may also cause the MIL lamp¢
page 29
to come on.
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns .
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries .
- Failure to shut the eng ine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel f iller neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and ove rflow ing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a cellular telephone while re­
fueling. The elect romagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ignite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
yo u must get back in your vehicle wh ile
refueling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near you r vehicle when refu­
eling or filling a portable fuel container .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel w ith a portable

fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the trunk) . Static electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire.
- Always place a portab le fue l conta iner
on the ground before fi lling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle complete­
l y inside the portable container before
and during filling.
- If filling a portab le container made of
metal, the fi ller nozzle must always be
i n contact with the conta iner. This will
help prevent static electric ity from dis­
charging and cause a fire .
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers .
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F8S2 -86) .
(D Note
If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint .
@) For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozzle
switches off automatically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out . In
addition , the expansion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
l ute the environment . •

@ Tips
-Running your engine while refuelling
may cause vapors to escape or even
cause fue l to spill out of the tank. This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fore the tank is full.
- Do not refuel your vehicle w ith the igni­
tion switched on. The fuel gauge may
otherwise not indicate the correct fuel
level after refuelling.
- Diesel vehicles* are equipped with a die­
sel m isfueling protector. It allows the
vehicle to be fueled only w ith a diesel
fuel pump nozzle. A worn or damaged
nozzle or a nozzle that is too small may
not be able to open the diesel misfueling
protector . If this is the case, try turning
the nozz le before inserting it in the fue l
filler neck, use a different fuel pump or see your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized repair facility for assistance.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not
locked when you lock the vehicle from
the inside.
Fuel filler flap emergency release
You can open the fuel filler flap by hand if the
power locking system should fail.

the retainer from the mounts ¢

left using a coin or a similar object and re­
move the locking mechanisms.
.. Tilt the retainer upward and pull the trim
out. Lay the trim down on its side, because
there is an electr ical wire on the back.

behind the right side trim panel in the lug­
gage compartment .

reduction

On vehicles with selective catalytic reduction,
an urea solution (AdBlue) is injected into the
exhaust system before a nitrogen oxide cata­

The AdBlue is stored in a separate tank in the
vehicle. The Ad Blue usage accounts for ap­ prox imately 0.5% to 1.2% of the diese l fuel
that is used.
You must refill the Ad Bl ue or have it refilled
by your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
workshop as soon as the AdBlue refill mes­
sage appears in the instrument cluster
¢page 220.
A WARNING
Failure to heed Ad Blue ref ill information in
the instrument cluste r can prevent the ve­
hicle from being started and drive n. If the
vehicle cannot be driven and an eme rgency
a rises, perso na l inju ry can occur.

The Ad Blue fi ller tube is located near the die­
sel filler tube. Always add 1.5 gallons (5 . 7 lit­
ers) of AdBlue (three bottles). This is the mini­
mum amount required to ensure the system
detects the refilling and to start the engine.
The Ad Blue tank capacity is approximately
4 .5 gal lons (17 liters).
Opening the filler tube and adding
AdBlue
Requirement: The request to add Ad Blue must
appear in the instrument cluster display.
• Switch the ignition off.
• Open the tank cover

• Turn the cap counterclockwise with the lug
wrench from the vehicle too l kit to remove it

• Remove the cap from the refill bottle.
• Position the refill bottle on the filler tube
and turn the bottle clockwise until it stops
turning

• Press lightly against the bottom of the bot­
tle @to empty it . Continue pressing the
bottom of the bottle until it is empty or un­
til fluid stops flowing into the tank.
• Turn the bottle to the left without pressing
on the bottom.
Closing the filler tube
• Turn the cap clockwise on the filler tube
w ith the lug wrench until you hear it tighten
completely .
• Close the tank cover .
After filling
The vehicle must be driven. The system may
take up to two minutes to detect that the
AdBlue has been filled.
• If there was no Ad Blue left in the tank and a
range of
O mi (0 km ) was displayed in the
ins trument cluster, switch the ign ition on
for about 15 seconds before start ing the en­
gine.
_& WARNING
-Ad Blue can irritate the skin, eyes and res­
piratory system. If there is contact with
the fluid, flush immediately with plenty of
water. Consult a phys ician if necessary.
(D Note
-Only use Ad Blu e that conforms to the
standard ISO 22241-1. Do not mix any
additives with the AdBlue and do not di­
lute it with water.
- Do not add Ad Blue to the diese l tank or
add diese l fuel to the Ad Blue tank. Mix­
ing can lead to damage to the engine
and the AdBlue tank system . The Limited
New Vehicle Warranty does not cover
such damage.

vehicle components, plastic and carpet .
Remove the fluid as quick ly as possib le
with a damp cloth and plenty of cold wa­
ter. If the Ad Blue has already crystal­
lized, use warm water and a sponge.
AdB lue residue that is not removed w ill
crystall ize and can damage the affected
su rface.
- Do not store the refill bott le in the vehi­
cle. If it leaks, the escap ing Ad B lue could
damage the vehicle inter ior.
- Do not allow AdBlue to come into con­
tact with clo thing. If there is contact
wi th the f lui d, flush immedi ately with
plenty of w ater .

-You can obtain refill bott les from any au­
thorized Audi de aler or o ther qua lified
workshop .
- Follow the AdBl ue manufacturer's in­

Hot engine coolant can burn you.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood .
' Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking
and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent per­
sonal injury always observe the following

vehicle is a hazardous area

A WARNING
To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Switch off the ignition .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever to P (Park).
- Always let the engine cool down. Hot
components will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire .
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm . The cool­
ant system is pressurized and hot cool­
ant could spray out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any circumstances. This increases the
risk of burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electri-
cal system is necessary: ..,_

Using the proper engine oil is important for
the functionality and service life of the en­
gine. Your engine was factory -filled with a
high-quality oil which can usually be used
t h roughout the entire year.
Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not cover damage or malfunctions due to
failure to follow recommended mainte­
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet .
- Use only a high quality engine oil that ex­
pressly complies with the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's en­
gine . Using any other oil can cause seri­
ous engine damage.
- Do not mix any lubricants or other addi­
tives into the engine oil. Doing so can
cause engine damage.
If you need to add oil and there is none
available that meets the Audi oil quality
standard your engine requires, you may
add a total of no more than 0.5 quart/liter
of a high-quality "synthetic"oil that meets
the following specifications.
- Vehicles with gasoline engine: ACEA A3
or API SM with a viscosity grade of
SAE 0W-30, SAE SW-30 or SA E SW-40.
- Vehicles with diesel engine: ACEA C3 or
API CF with a viscosity grade of
SAE 0W-30 or SAE SW-30.

Engine oil consumption
T he engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts .
In order to provide effec tive lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in ­
ternal combustion engines consume a certain
amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the engine. Typically, engines
with a specified break-in period (see
c::> page 200) consume more oil during the
break-in period than they consume after oil
consumption has stabili zed.
Under normal conditions , the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condi tions. Further fac­
tors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida­
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump­
tion may increase over time until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
With all these variables coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be es ­
tablished or specified . There is no alternative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev­
el , see

If the yellow engine oil level warning symbol
in the instrument cluster

-The oil pres sure warning display. is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref­
erably each t ime you refuel, and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impression your engine
consumes excessive amounts of oil, we
r ecommend that you consult your Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that
the accurate measurement of oil con­
sumption requires great care and may
take some time. Your Audi dealer has in ­
str uctions about how to measure oil con­
sumption accurately.

Depending on the way the veh icle is driven
and the operating conditions, oil consumption
can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 m iles (0.5 liter
per 1,000 km) . Consumption may be higher
within the f irst 3,000 miles (5,000 km).
