If the switch is in the center position, the inte­
rior l ighting is controlled automatically.

To turn a reading light on/off, press the but­

The appearance and location of the rear read­
ing lights may differ depending on the model.
Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted .

.,. Press the knob to release it .
.,. Turn the knob toward"-" or"+" to reduce or
increase the brightness .
.,. Press the knob again to return it to its origi­
nal posit ion.
(!') Tips
The instrument i llumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off . As the daylight fades, the illu­
mination of the dia ls likewise dims auto­
matically and wi ll go out completely when
the ou tside light is very low. This feature is
meant to rem ind you to sw itch on the
headlights when outside light conditions
become poor .

The memory buttons are located in the driv­
er's door.
Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the !OFF ! button to switch the memory
function on/off. The word
OFF lights up
when the memory function is switched off.
Seat profiles are neither stored nor recalled.
Storing a seat profile
• Press the !SET ! button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
t in gs.
• Press a memory button
([II or rn) briefly. A
tone confirms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ignition
is switched off, press the memory button.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
switched on, press and hold the memory
button until the seat adjustment is com ­
plete .
A WARNING
-For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary - otherwise you risk having an ac­
c ident.
- In an emergency the recall procedure can
be cancelled by press ing the
!OF F! switch
or by tapping the memory buttons.

Opening/closing
• To open the ashtray, slide the cover up

• To close the ashtray, press down on the cov­
er .
Emptying the ashtray
• To remove the insert, slide the latch to the
right~fig. 68-arrow-.
• To instal l the insert, press it down into the
mount.
A WARNING
Never put waste paper in the ashtray. Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray
could set waste paper on fire.
Cigarette lighter

• Press the cigarette lighter in.
• Remove the cigarette lighter when it pops
out .
T he cigarette lighter should only be used as a
power source for the compressor from the in­
flatable spare kit* when absol ute ly necessary.
A WARNING
The cigarette lighter on ly works when the
ignition is switched on. Incorrect usage
can lead to serious injuries or burns. For
this reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle because this in­
creases the risk of injury.

12-volt socket.

the socket.
The 12-volt socket can be used for electrical
accessories. The power input must not exceed
120 watts.
There is an additional 12-vo lt socket in the
center console .
Before you purchase any accessories, always
read and fo llow the information in
~ page 285, Additional accessories and parts
replacement .

The socket and the electrica l accessories
connected to it operate only when the igni­
tion is switched on. Incorrect usage can

electrical current, such as a solar pane l
or battery charger, to the 12-vo lt socket.

plugs that fit properly.

When the engine is off and accessories are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be drained.
Storage
General overview

- Always remove objects from the instru-
ment panel. Any items not put away
could slide around ins ide the veh icle
while driving or when accele rat ing or
when applying the brakes or when dr iv­
ing arou nd a corne r.
- When you are dr iving make su re that
anyth ing you may have placed in the cen­
ter conso le or other sto rage locations
can not fall out i nto the footwe lls. In c ase
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, dep ress the clutch o r acce ler ­
ate.
- Any pieces o f clothing that you have
hung up m ust not interfere with the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are des igned
only for lightweight cloth ing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks .
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especia lly if the a irbag is d eployed -
these objec ts co uld inju re any passen­
gers inside the ve hicl e.

Opening rear cupholders
~ To open the cupholder, press on the symbol

~ To ad just the arm @, swing it in the direc­
tion of the arrow.
~ Place the beverage in the holder and release
the arm. The arm swings back by itself and
automatically secures the beverage .
Closing cupholders
~ To close the cupholder, press on the center
section between the two arms and push the
cupholder in the slot as far as it will go.
A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal injury.
- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is moving . In case
of an accident, sudden braking or other
vehicle movement, hot liquid could spill,
caus ing scald ing burns . Spilled hot liquid
can also ca use an accident and personal
injury.

-Use on ly soft cups in the cupholder. Hard
cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident.
- Never use the cupho lder or adapter as an
ashtray -risk of fire.
(D Note
Only drink containers with lids should be
carried in the cupholder. Liquid could spill
out and damage your vehicle's electronic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

~ To open the glove compartment, pull the

and swing the cover down to open.
~ To close the glove compartment, push the
glove compartment lid upward until the lock
engages .
T he glove compartment can be locked using
the mechanical key~

On the right side in the glove compartment is
a holder with the key body into which the
eme rgency key must be clipped to be able to
start the veh icle.
&_ WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while driving.

by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in which it wo uld not deploy
if the changes had not been made. Other
kinds of changes may reduce the force levels
measured by the sensors and p revent the air ­
bag from deploying when it should.
& WARNING
Changing the vehicle's suspension includ­
ing use of unapproved tire-rim combina­
tions can change Advanced Airbag pe r­
formance and increase the risk of ser ious
personal injury in a crash.
- Never ins tall suspe nsio n components
that do not have the same per formance
characteristics as the components origi­
nally insta lled on your vehicle .
- Never use ti re -rim combinations that
have not bee n approved by A udi.

Items stored between the safety belt
buckle and the center console can cause
the sensors in the buckle to send the
wrong informat io n to the electronic con­
trol modu le and prevent the Advanced A ir­
bag System from work ing proper ly.
- Always make sure that noth ing can inter-
fere w ith the safe ty belt buckles and that
they are not obst ructed.
Side airbags
Description of side airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained occupants .

The side airbags are located in the sides o f the
front seat backrests

backrest facing the doors . They are ident if ied
by the word "AIRBAG".
The side airbag system b asically con sis t s o f:
- the electron ic cont rol module and external
side impa ct sensors
- t he two a irbags located in the s ides of the
front backrests and the two a irbags* loca ted
in the rear backrest
- the airbag warning light in the instrumen t
cluste r.
The airbag system is mon itored electronically
to make ce rtain that it is f unctioning p roperly
at all times. Each time you turn on the ign i­
ti on, the airbag system ind icator light will
come on for a few seconds (se lf diagnostics).
T he side airbag system supplements the safe­
ty belts a nd can help to reduce the risk of i n­
jury to the driver's and front passenger's up­
per torso on the s ide of the vehicle th at is
struck in a s ide collision . The airbag deploys
only in side impacts and only when the vehicle
acce lerat ion reg istered by the control unit is
high enough. If this rate is be low the refer­
ence value programmed into the control unit,
the side airbags will not be triggered,
even
though the car may be badly damaged as a re­
sult of the co llision .
It is not possib le to de­
fine an airbag trigge ring range that will cover
every possib le ang le of impact, s ince the c ir ­
c u mstances will vary cons iderably be tween
one collis ion and another . Important factors
include, for example, the nature (hard or soft)
of the impacting object, the angle of impact,
vehicle speed, etc.

Aside from their normal safety function, safe­
ty belts work to help keep the driver or front
passenger in position in the event of a side
collision so that the side airbags can provide
protection .
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your
safety belt . Rather, it is part of the overall oc­
cupant restraint system in your vehicle. Al-
