Depending on the vehicle equ ipment level,
you may choose between the quartz clock or
the GPS controlled clock*

Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilo­
meters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models -Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can
be changed in the radio or MMI*. You can
learn more about this in the MMI manual or in
the radio user's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of
kilometers or miles that have been driven on
the vehicle . T
he trip odometer @shows the distance driv­
en since it was last reset. It can be used to
measure short distances. The last d igit shows
distances of 100 meters or 1/10 of a mile.
T he trip odometer can be reset to zero by
pressing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the trip
odometer and w ill stay on. Contact your au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the problem cor ­
rected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automat ica lly.
If an unauthor ized key was used, SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be opera ted
r::!;>p age32 .
(D Tips
- When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odome­
ter and temperature are displayed for an
additional
30 seconds .
- Yo u can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button r::!;> page 11 while the igni­
tion is switched off .
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.

misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex ­
haust system . The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged .
Warning/indicator
lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
m alfunctions
c::> .&. .
Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af­
ter a short t ime. To display a message again,
press the
I S ET I bu tton c::> page 11 . If several
malfunction s occur, each of the indicator/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators ligh ts in the display can turn
on in several colors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle info rmation may result
in serious personal injury o r vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever sta lled or s topped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe dis tance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

- T he engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a poten tially hazardous a rea.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme ca u­
t ion when working under the hood

the function of that system when you switch
the ignition on . T hese systems are marked
with a./ in t he followi ng tab les. If one of
these ind icator lights does no t turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­
gine compartment -you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area . Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the re is an elect ronic steer ing
col umn lock ma lfunction. You ca nnot switch
the ign ition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it ca nnot be
steered. Seek professional ass istance.
Ill! Ste ering lock: Contact d ealer!
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction.
Drive to yo ur authorized Audi dea le r immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunct ion in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering .
If it is
tow ed w ith th e stee ring lock ed, there is
the risk of a n accident .
©-Ignition lock
• Ignition lock d efe ctive. Contact d eal er! If
the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be ab le to sw itch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the ma lfunction corrected.
On vehicles with conve nience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched off using the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button because the en­
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched off.

FJ,/ ~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the Jj] ind icator light blinks while driv ing ,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active­
ly regu lating.
If the D] ind icator light turns on , the system
has switched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator lig ht tu rns off
whe n the system is functioning f ully.

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light

turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lock is malfunctioning .
Th is also causes the ESC to malfunction . The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but A BS is not active.

A WARNING ,~ ~
If the ~ (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
t he vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
cou ld cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding . Drive caref ully to
the nearest a uthorized Audi dea ler and
have the malfunction corrected.

ABS/(@!) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light rII:1 (USA mod ­
els)/ [I] (Ca nada models) w ill come o n for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an a utomatic chec k
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
- The warning/ indicator lig ht does not illumi ­
na te when you swi tc h t he ignition on.
- T he warning/i ndicator lig ht does not go out
after a few seconds .
- T he warn ing/ind icator lig ht illuminates
wh ile driving.
T he ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization contro l (ESC) : Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the inst ru­
men t clus ter display and a war ning tone
sounds.
Th e brake sy ste m will still respond even
without th e assi stan ce of the ABS sy ste m .

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake war ning l igh t c::> page 15 and the
ABS wa rning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunct ion in the ABS , and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
c::> A . The AB S will not wo rk and you w ill no ­
tice a change in b raking response and per ­
formance .

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system

See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING
- I f the trm (USA mode ls)/ [I] (Canad a
models) warning light does not go ou t,

or if it comes on while dr iving, the ABS
system is not wor king p roperly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w it h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS prov ides.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer as
soon as possible .

gethe r, the rear wheels could lock up
f ir st under hard bra king. R ear wh eel lock­
up can ca use loss of vehicle control and

ly and avo id sudden, hard brake applica­
tions.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
con tro l and an accident. Have your

properly. Have the system checked and re­
pa ired at your author iz ed Audi dealer.
~O Adaptive Light
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive light
111 Aud i adaptive l ight: defective
If t he indicator lig ht t urns on a nd th is mes­
sage appears, t he re is a ma lfunction in the
adapt ive light system. The headlig hts still
function.
Go to an a uth o rized dea le rship to have the
headlights or the contro l unit for the adapt ive
light repa ired.

Applies to vehicles: with light/rain sensor

If the indicator light t urns on and th is mes­
sage appears, the lig ht/ra in sensor is n ot

For safety reasons the low beams are turned
on permanent ly w ith the switch in AUTO .
H owever, you can c ontinue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switc h. You can still
con trol a ll funct ions tha t are in depe nden t of
the rai n sensor through the wi ndshi eld wipe r
l eve r.
Contact your author ized Audi dealer as soon
as possible to have the prob lem cor rected .
Q Adaptive dampers
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select and adaptive
dampers

there is a malfunction in the adaptive damp ­
e rs . Please go to an authorized Audi dea ler or
qua lified workshop to have the malfu nction
repaired.

There is a malfunction with t he sport d iffe ren­
tia l.

Sport differential : Overheating
T he trans missio n tempera ture has inc reased
s ignifica ntly due to t he spor ty d riving manner .
