Warning/indicator
lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
m alfunctions

Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af
ter a short t ime. To display a message again,
press the
I S ET I bu tton c::> page 11 . If several
malfunction s occur, each of the indicator/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators ligh ts in the display can turn
on in several colors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle info rmation may result
in serious personal injury o r vehicle dam
age.
- Whenever sta lled or s topped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe dis tance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

- T he engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a poten tially hazardous a rea.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme ca u

BRAKE/( ([)) Brake system
The light illuminates when the ignition is
switched on.
It goes out after the eng ine has
been started. This ind icates that the brake
warn ing light is func tioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking, there may be a
malfunction in the electrical system. In this
case, contact your authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system warning/ind icator light
turns on, there is a brake system malfunction.

Stop vehicle and check brake fluid level
If the indicator light turns on and the mes
sage appears, proceed as follows:
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~ Turnoff the engine.

when stationary or after switching the
ignition on,
check if you can re lease the
parking brake. After releasing the parking
brake, carefully drive to your authorized
Audi dea ler immediately to have the ma l
function corrected. If you cannot release the
parking brake, seek professional assistance.
- If the indicator light and the message ap
pear
while driving , the emergency brak ing
function may not be available. It may not be possible to set the parking brake or release
it once it has been set . Seek profess ional as
sistance .

turns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regulating
function may have failed. Functions that
stabilize the vehicle a re no longer avai la-
ble. This could cause the vehicle to .,.

swerve and increase the risk of sliding .
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop and have the malfunction corrected.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
park ing brake is released, or lights up
wh ile you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid reservoir is too low.
If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
au thorized Audi dealer or qualified work
shop and have the brake system inspect
ed.
-Always keep in m ind that afte r several
brake applications, yo u will need greater
pressure on the brake peda l to stop your
vehicle. Do not re ly on stra ined brakes to
respond w ith maximum stopp ing power
in critical situations. You must a llow for
increased brak ing dista nces. The extra
distance used up by fad ing brakes could
lead to an acc ident.

The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake .

(Canada models) turns on, the park ing brake
was set .
The warning/indicator light will go out when
the park ing brake is released.

If the in dica tor light blinks and the message
appears, there is not eno ugh braking power to
keep the vehicle from ro lling . The brakes have
overheated . The vehicle could ro ll away even
on a small incline.

To release the parking bra ke, press t he b ra ke
pedal and press the button<®> or start driving
with s tart ing ass ist at the same time
¢ page 88.
Plea se relea se parking brake
T o re lease the par king brake manually, p ress
t h e b rake pedal and press the button<®> at
the same time. The parking brake on ly re leas
es automatically if the driver's safety be lt is
fastened.

ally, an acoustic warning (gong) will also
sound .

when you switch on the ignition and must go

• Alternator fault : Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator l ight turns on and the mes
sage appears, there is a mal funct ion in the
generator or veh icle electrical system .

fied wor kshop immed iate ly. Because the ve hi
cle b attery is discharg ing, turn
off all unnec
essa ry e lec trical equipmen t such as the rad io.
Seek professiona l assistance if the battery
charge level is too low.

steam or coolant escaping from the en
gine compartment -you risk being scald
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or

- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area . Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

col umn lock ma lfunction. You ca nnot switch
the ign ition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it ca nnot be
steered. Seek professional ass istance.

If the indicator light t urns on and the mes
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction.
Drive to yo ur authorized Audi dea le r immedi
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunct ion in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering .
If it is
tow ed w ith th e stee ring lock ed, there is
the risk of a n accident .

• Ignition lock d efe ctive. Contact d eal er! If
the indicator light turns on and the mes
sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be ab le to sw itch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi
ately to have the ma lfunction corrected.
On vehicles with conve nience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched off using the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button because the en
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched off.

If the Jj] ind icator light blinks while driv ing ,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active
ly regu lating.
If the D] ind icator light turns on , the system
has switched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator lig ht tu rns off
whe n the system is functioning f ully.

Stabilizat ion control (ESC /ABS ): Fault! See

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light
fJD (USA models) ; tiJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lock is malfunctioning .
Th is also causes the ESC to malfunction . The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but A BS is not active.
D rive to your author ized Audi dealer immedi
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
