The airbag system is monitored elect ron ica lly
to make certain that it is functioning prope rly
at all times . Each time you turn on the igni­
tion, the airbag system indicator light will
come on for a few seconds (self diagnostics) .
The s ide a irb ag system supplements the safe­
ty belts and can help to reduce the risk of in ­
jury to the drive r's and front passenger's up­
per torso on the side of the vehicle that is
struck in a side co llision. The airbag deploys
only in s ide impacts and only when the vehicle
accelera tion regis tered by the con trol unit is
h igh enough . If this rate is below the refer ­
ence va lue programmed into the control un it,
the side airbags will not be triggered , even
though the ca r may be badly damaged as a re­
sult of the collision.
It is not possible to de­
fine an a irbag trigger ing range that will cover
every possible angle of impact, since the cir­
cumstances wi ll vary considerably between
one co llision and another. Important factors
include, for examp le, the nature (hard or soft)
of the impacting object, the angle of impact,
veh icle speed, etc .

Aside from their normal safety function, sa fe­
ty belts work to he lp keep the driver or front
passenger in posit ion in the event of a side
coll is ion so that the side a irbags can provide
p rotection.
T he airbag system is
not a substitute for your
safety belt . Rather, it is pa rt of the overall oc ­
cupa nt restraint system in your veh icle. Al­
ways remember that the side airbag system
can only help to p rotect you if yo u are wear ing
your safety bel t and wear ing it prope rly. This
is another reason why you sho uld a lways wear
your safety belts, not just beca use the law re­
qu ires you to do so

It is important to remember that while the
supp lemental side airbag system is designed

to reduce the likelihood of ser ious injuries,
other injuries, for example, swelling, bruising ,
and minor abrasions can also be associated
with deployed side airbags. Remember too,
s ide airbags will dep loy only once and only in
certain kinds of accidents -your safety belts
are always there to offer p rotection .
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack
of veh icle damage are not necessarily an indi­
cation of over -sensitive or failed airbag activa ­
t ion. In some col lisions, both fro nt and side
airbags may i nflate. Remember too, that ai r­
bags will deploy only once a nd only in ce rtain
ki nds of col lis ions -yo ur safe ty belts a re al­
ways there to offe r protec tion in those acc i­
dents i n which airbags are no t supposed to
deploy or when they have a lready deployed.
The side airbag system will not deploy:
- when t he ignit io n is tu rned off
- in side co llisions when the accele ration
meas ured by t he sensor is too low
- in front-end collisions
- in rear- end collisions
-in rollovers.
In some types of accidents t he front airbags
and side airbags may be tr iggere d together.

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of
skidd ing and loss of veh icle control. It works
only when the eng ine is running. ESC detects
certain difficult driv ing situations, including
when the vehicle is beginning to spin (yaw) out of cont ro l and he lps you to get the vehicle
back under control by select ively b rak ing the
wheels, and/or red ucing engine power and
p roviding steering assistance to help hold the
ve hicle on the driver's intended course . The in­
dicator light
DJ in the instrument cluster
blinks when ESC is taking action to help you
control the vehicle.
ESC has limitations.
It is important to remem­
ber that ESC cannot overcome the laws of
phys ics. It will not a lways be able to help out
under all conditions you may come up against.
For example, ESC may not always be able to
help you master situat ions where there is a
sudden change in the coefficient of fr iction of
the road surface. When there is a sect io n of
d ry road that is s udden ly cove red with water,
slush o r snow, ESC canno t perform the same
way it would on the dry su rface.
If the vehicle
hydroplanes (rides on a c ush ion of water in­
stead of the road surface), ESC wi ll not be
ab le to he lp you steer the veh icle because con-

tact with the pavement has been interrupted
and the vehicle cannot be braked or steered .
D uring fast corner ing, particular ly on wind ing
roads, ESC cannot always deal as effectively
with difficult dr iv ing s ituations than at lower
speeds. When towing a trailer, ESC is not able
to help you regain control as it would if you
were not tow ing a trailer.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic and weather conditions . ESC can­
not override the vehicle's physical lim its, in­
crease the availab le tract ion, or keep a veh icle
o n the road if road departu re is a result of
driver ina ttent io n. Instead , ESC imp roves the
poss ibility of keep ing the vehicle under con­
trol and on the road during extreme maneu­
vers by using the driver's steering i nputs to
help keep the vehicle go ing in the intended di­
rect ion. If you are traveling at a speed that
causes you to run off the road before ESC can
provide any assistance, you may not experi­
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC is switched on all the time. In certain sit­
uat ions when you need less traction, you can
switch off ASR by pressing the butto n
[ill

The following systems are integrated in the
ESC:
Anti-lock bra king sy stem (ABS )
ABS prevents the whee ls from locking up
when brak ing. T he vehicle can st ill be steered
even dur ing hard braking. App ly steady pres­
su re to the brake peda l. Do not pump the ped­
al. A pulsing in the brake pedal ind icates that
the system is helping you to brake the veh icle .
Brake assi st system
The brake ass ist system can decrease braking
distance. It increases brak ing power when the
drive r presses the brake peda l quickly in emer­
gency s ituations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal unti l the s ituation is over. In
vehicles with adaptive c ruise control*, the
brake assis t system is more sensitive if the

Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used must conform to exact
specifications .
The service interval disp lay in the instrument
cluster of your vehicle will inform y ou when it
is time for an oil change. We recommend that
you have your oil changed by an authorized
Audi Se rv ice Advisor .
If you have to top off the o il between o il
changes, use the Audi o il quality standard
specified in the tab le.

Using the proper engine oil is important for
the functionality and service life of the en­
gine. Your engine was factory-filled with a
high-quality oil which can usually be used
throughout the entire year.

Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does
not cover damage or malfunctions due to
failure to follow recommended mainte­
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty
&
Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality engine oil that ex­
pressly complies with the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's en­
gine . Using any other oil can cause seri­
ous engine damage.
- Do not mix any lubricants or other addi­
tives into the engine oil. Doing so can
cause engine damage.
If you need to add oil and there is none
available that meets the Audi oil quality
standard your engine requires, you may
add a total of no more than 0.5 quart/liter
of a high-quality "synthetic"oil that meets
the following specifications.
- Vehicles with gasoline engine: ACEA A3
or API SM with a viscosity grade of
SAE 0W-30, SAE SW-30 or SAE SW-40.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade ­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in­
ternal combustion engines consume a certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the engine. Typically, engines
with a specified break-in period (see
¢ page 179) consume more oil during the
break -in period than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized.
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road conditions . Further fac­
tors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida­
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump­
tion may increase over time until replacement of worn components may become necessary.
With all these variables coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be es­
tablished or specified. There is no alternative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev­ el, see
Note.

Depending on the way the vehicle is driven
and the operating conditions, oil consumption
can be up to 1 quart per 600 mi les (0.8 liter
per 1,000 km). Consumption may be higher
within the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km) .

According ly, when the low tire pressure te ll­
tale illuminates, you shou ld stop and check
your tires as soon as possible, and inf late
them to the proper pressure. Driving on a s ig­
n ificantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to
overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-in­
flation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire
tread life, and may affect the vehicle's han­
dli ng and stopp ing ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not a subst itute
for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driv­
e r's responsib ility to ma inta in correct tire
p ressu re, even if under- inflation has not
reached the leve l to trigger ill umination of the
TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your veh icle has also been equ ipped with a
TPMS malfunction indicato r to indica te when
the system is not opera ting properly. The
TPMS mal function indicator is combined wi th
the low tire press ure telltale . When the sys­
tem detects a malfunction, the te lltale will
f lash fo r approximately one minute and then
remain cont inuous ly illuminated. This se­
quence will continue upon subsequen t vehicle
start -ups as long as the ma lfunction ex ists .
When the malfunct ion indicator is ill uminat­
ed, the system may not be able to detect or
signal low t ire pressure as intended . TPMS
malfunctions may occur for a variety of rea ­
sons , includ ing the installat ion of replace­
ment or a lternate tires or whee ls on the veh i­
cle that prevent the TPMS from funct ioning
p roperly. Always check the TPM S malf unct ion
tellta le after replacing one o r more t ires or
wheels on your veh icle to ensure that the re­
p lacement or a lternate tires and wheels allow
the TPMS to continue to function p roperly. Tire pressure indicator appears

low or if there is a system malfunction .

- The driver is responsible for maintaining
the correct tire pressures . You must

- Under certain cond itions (such as a spor ­
ty driving style, w inter condit ions or un­
paved roads), the pressure monitor ind i­
cator may be de layed.
