The climate controls automatically maintain the selected temperature in the vehicle interior through
out each season .

Using the previously recommended setting is the
qu ickest way to ach ieve a comfortable climate in
the vehicle . This setting should therefore on ly be
changed when personal comfort levels or certain
circumstances req uire it .
The climate controls are a combination of a uto
mat ic heating and vent ilation systems and a cool
ing system which dehum idifies and cools the air
ins ide the veh icle .
The climate controls automatically maintain a
temperature once it has been set. The tempera ture of the air from the ve nts, fan speed (air vol
ume) and air d istr ibut ion are also a utomat ically
adj usted. The system also takes into account
strong sunshine so that manua l adjustment is
n o t necessary. So in almost all ca ses,
automatic
mode
offers the best conditions for the comfo rt of the occupants at a
ll times of the year

Please note :
In cooling mode , relative humidity in the interior
is reduced. This prevents the windows from fog
ging up .
When relative hum idity a nd temperatures o ut
s ide are high,
condensation can drip from the air
condit ioning evaporator and form a pool of water
under the vehicle . This is normal and not an indi
cation of a leak!
When outs ide temperatures are low, the fan does
not switch to a higher speed unti l the coolant has
reached an adequate temperat ure, with the ex
cept ion of the defrost setting .
When accelerating a t wide-open throttle, the ai r
condit ioning compressor is temporari ly switched
off to ma intain full eng ine power .
In order to ensure engine coo ling under ext reme
engine loads, the compressor is switched off if
coolant temperatures climb too high .

Rear window defogger
The r ear window d efogger clears th e re ar win
dow of cond ensation .

the rear window defogger on and off.
The rear w indow defogger works only when the
engine is running. The indicator light in the but
ton illuminates when the rear window defogger
is turned on .
The window between the cockpit and engine
compartment is also cleared with the rear w in
dow.
The rear window defogger is switched off auto
mat ica lly after approx. 10 minutes.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rea r window is clear, yo u
should switch the rear window defogger off .
The reduced power consumpt ion has a benef i
cial effect on f uel consumption.
Heated seats

The seat cushion and the seatback of the front
seats can be heated electrically.

Automat ic operation ensures constant tempera
tures in the interior and dehumidifies the air in
s ide the veh icle. Air temperature, vo lume, and
distribution are controlled automatically to reach
or maintain the desired interio r temperature as
quic kly as possible. Fluc tuat io ns in exterio r tem
perature and the effects of temperature from the
pos it ion of t he sun are compe nsated for auto
matically.
Manual air recirculation mode~
The recirculation mode prevents polluted outside
air from entering the vehicle in te rior.

A/C operation ~

The cooling system is switched on during A/Cop
eration - the heating and venti lation system is
contro lled automatically.
(D Tips
If the LED in the switch stays on after A/Cop
eration has been switched off(= switching the
A/C off), there is a fault in an air conditioning
component. Please consult an author ized
Aud i dea ler when there is an operating prob
lem.
Using the climate controls economically
Economical use of the climate controls helps to
save fuel.
When climate control is working in coo ling mode,
engine performance is red uced and fuel con
sumpt ion is affected. To keep the time the air
conditioning is on as short as possible, you
should do the following:
~ If you would like to save f uel, switch the air
condit ion ing
off.
~ If you open the w indows wh ile driving, switch
the a ir cond it ion ing
off .
~ If the vehicle is ext remely hot due to the heat
of the sun, briefly open doors and w indows.

When you save fuel, you reduce em iss ions
from the vehicle .

Anti-loc k br aking sy stem (ABS )
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when
brak ing . T he vehicle can st ill be stee red even dur
ing hard braking. App ly steady pressure to the
brake peda l. Do not pump the peda l. A pulsing in
the brake pedal indicates that the system is help
ing you to brake the vehicle.
Brake assist sy ste m
The brake assist system can decrease braking dis
tance. It increases braking power when the dr iver
presses the brake pedal quick ly in emergency sit
uations. You must press and ho ld the brake pedal
until the situation is over.
Anti -slip regulation (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the drive whee ls
begin to spin and adapts the force to the road
conditions. This makes it easier to start, acceler
ate and dr ive up h ills.
Electronic diff erential lock (EDL )
The EDL brakes wheels that are spinning and
transfers the drive power to the other drive wheel or wheels if the vehicle is equipped w ith all-whee l
drive*. This function is available up to about 60
mph (100 km/h) .
I n extreme cases , EDL automatically switches off
to help keep the brake on the braked wheel from
overheating . EDL wi ll switch on again automati
cally when conditions have returned to normal.
A WARNING
- ESC, ABS, ASR and EDL cannot overcome the
laws of phys ics. Th is is especially important
on slippery or wet roads. If the syst ems be
gin act ing to stab ilize your vehicle, you
sho uld immediately cha nge your speed to
match the roa d and traffic con ditions. Do
not let the increased safety provided by
these systems tempt you to take risks . Do
ing so wi ll increase the risk of a loss of vehi
cle contro l, collis ion and serio us personal in
juries .
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffic and
weather cond it ions. The risk of losing con
tro l of the veh icle increases when driving

too fast, especially through curves and on
slippery or wet roads, and when dr iving too
close to vehicles up ahead. ESC, ABS, the
brake assist system, EDL and ASR cannot
prevent coll is ions .
- Always accelerate with special care on even,
smooth surfaces such as those that are wet
or covered with ice and snow. The drive
wheels can spin even with these assistance sys tems that cannot always help to reduce
the risk of loss of veh icle control.
(D Tips
- ABS and ASR only wo rk correctly when all
four wheels are eq uipped with ident ical
tire s. Different tire s izes can lead to a reduc
t ion i n engine power.
- Yo u may hear noises when the systems de
sc ribed a re wo rking.
- If the ind icator light GJ or II (USA mod
els) ;tiJ (Canada models) appea rs, there
may be a malfunction~

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining start
ing capability .
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the cold time of
year . Abundant electrical energy is required, but
only a little is generated . It is also critical if the
engine is not running and electrical components
are turned on. In this instance energy is being
consumed but none is being generated.
It is in precisely these situations that you w ill no
tice energy management actively regulating the
d istribution of ene rgy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
several days or weeks , electr ical components are
gradually cut back or switched off . This reduces
energy consumption and maintains starting ca
pability over a longer pe riod .
Take into consideration that when you unlock
your veh icle, some convenience functions, such
as the remote key or power seat adjustment, may
not be available. The convenience functions will
be available again when you turn on the ignition
and start the engine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the
engine turned off, the battery is being dis
charged .
If starting capability is jeopardized due to energy
consumption, a message appears in the driver in
formation display .
You have to start the engine to charge the bat
tery .
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the
vehicle is being driven, the battery can become
discharged. This happens mostly when little en
ergy is be ing generated and a great deal con
sumed and the battery's state of charge is not
optimal.
Intelligent technology
To bring the energy balance back into equilibri
um, consumers which require especially large
amounts of energy are temporar ily cut back or
switched off. Heating systems in part icu lar re
quire a great deal of energy. If you notice, for ex
ample, that the heated seats* or the heated rear
window are not heating, they have been tempo
rarily cut back or switched off . These systems w ill
be available again as soon as the energy balance
has been restored.
You w ill also not ice that engine idle speed has
been increased slightly . This is normal and not a
cause for concern. By incr easing eng ine idle
speed the additional energy required is generated
and the battery is charged.
Driver notification in the instrument
cluster display
If battery power drops in to the range where it
can limit the ability of the engine to start, this is
shown in the instrument cluster display w ith the
following driver message :
[•] low battery charge: battery will be charged
while driving
This notification reminds you that the starting
capability of the engine may be limited. As soon
as you start driving again, the battery will be re
charged and the notificat ion will go out .
Driver notification appears and goes out
again
If this driver notification appears after the igni
tion is turned on or while driv ing and it goes out
again after a while, the battery has been ade
quately recharged .
Driver notification appears and does not go
out again
If this driver notif ication appears after the ign i
t ion is turned on or while dr iv ing and does not go
out again, the battery's state of charge is not in
t h e optimal range. Starting ability is restricted .
Have the battery checked as soon as possible by
an authorized Audi dea le r or qualified workshop.

The exclusive use of unleaded fuel is critically im
portant for the life of the catalytic converter and
proper functioning of the engine.
A WARNING
- Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas where the hot exhaust system may come in contact with dry grass, brush, fuel spill or
other material which can cause a fire .
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust mani
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or
heat shields. During driving, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
([) Note
-Be aware that just one tank filling with lead
ed
fuel will already seriously degrade the
performance of the catalytic converter.
- Do not exceed the correct engine oil level
~page 160.
- Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
completely empty. The engine could misfire.
Unburned fuel could also get into the ex
haust system and this could cause the cata
lytic converter to overheat.
- Do not turn off the ignition while the vehicle
is moving.
- Do not continue to operate your vehicle un
der these conditions, as otherwise fuel can
reach the catalytic converter. This could re
sult in overheating of the converter, requir
ing its replacement.
- To assure efficient operation of the Emission
Control System:
- Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with the service recommen
dations in your Warranty
& Maintenance
booklet.
- Lack of proper maintenance as well as im
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the emission control system
and could lead to damage.
Driving and environment

Even when the Emission Control System is op
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op
erating states. This depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Using a differ
ent brand of fuel may help, or filling the tank
with lead-free super grade gasoline .
Shutting down vehicle
If you would like your vehicle to remain inopera
tive for a longer period of time , contact an Audi
or other specialized dealer. They can advise you
on necessary precautions e.g. corrosion preven
tion, maintenance and storage. Pay attention to
additional information concerning the battery.

Operation and
maintenance
Fuel economy, environmental impact, and wear
on your engine, brakes and tires largely depend
on three factors:
-your personal driving style
- operating conditions
- technical limitations
By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an
authorized Audi dealer helps to ensure that it runs properly and economically. The condition of
your vehicle not only affects its safety and ability
to hold its value, it also affects
fuel consump
tion.
The amount of oil used is related to engine load
and speed.
It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile
age has been driven.
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometers) before you can properly as
sess oil consumption .
This also applies to fuel consumption and engine output . .,,.

-Never use gasoline, stain remover, ben
zene, paint thinner or other solvents to re
move.
-Windows
- Remove snow and ice on windows and ex-
terior mirrors with a plastic scraper. To avoid scratches, move the scraper only in
one direction and not back and forth.
- Never remove snow or ice from windows
and mirrors using warm or hot water be
cause this could cause cracks to form.
- To avoid damage to the rear window de
fogger, do not apply any stickers on the
heating wires on the inside of the window.
-Decorative parts/trim
- Never use chrome care or cleaning prod-
ucts.
-Paint
-To reduce the risk of scratches, the vehicle
must be free of dirt and dust before pol
ishing or waxing.
- To prevent paint damage, do not polish or
wax the vehicle in direct sunlight.
- To reduce the risk of paint damage, do not
polish away rust film.
- Remove cosmetics and sunblock immedi
atedly. Otherwise, the paint could be dam
aged.
-Trim
- To reduce the risk of damage, do not treat
the trim around the panorama sunroof
with paint polish.
- Decorative decals
-To reduce the risk of damage, do not use
any rough powder or abrasive cleaning
products.
- To reduce the risk of damage, do not pol
ish decorative parts that have a matte fin
ish.
- Displays
-To avoid scratches, do not use dry cleaning
methods on displays.
- Controls
- Make sure that no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could cause damage.
- Safety belts
Vehicle care and cleaning
- Do not remove the safety belts to clean
them.
- Never clean safety belts or their compo
nents chemically or with corrosive fluids
or solvents and never allow sharp objects
to come into contact with the safety belts .
This could cause damage to the belt web bing .
- If there is damage to the webbing, the
connections, the retractors or the buckles,
have them replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or a qualified workshop.
- Textiles/Vinyl/ Alcantara
- Never treat Vinyl/Alcantara with leather
care products, solvents, floor polish, shoe
polish, stain remover or similar products.
- To avoid damage , have stubborn stains re
moved by an authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop.
- Never use steam cleaners, brushes, hard
sponges, etc. when cleaning.
- Do not turn on the seat heating* to dry
the seat.
- Objects with sharp edges such as zippers,
rivets on clothing or belts can cause dam
age to the surface.
- Open hook and loop fasteners, for exam
ple on clothing, can damage seat covers.
Make sure hook and loop fasteners are
closed.
- Natural leather
- Never treat leather with solvents, floor
polish, shoe polish, stain remover or simi
lar products .
- Objects with sharp edges such as zippers,
rivets on clothing or belts can cause dam
age to the surface .
- Never use steam cleaners, brushes, hard
sponges, etc. when cleaning .
- Do not turn on the seat heating* to dry
the seat.
- To help prevent the leather from fading,
do not leave the vehicle in direct sunlight
for long periods of time. If leaving the ve
hicle parked for long periods of time, you
should cover the leather to protect it from

Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coolant performs two functions: it
keeps the engine from overheating and it pro
tects the engine from freezing in the winter.
T he coo ling system is sealed and genera lly re
quires little attention.
The cooling system has been filled at the factory
with a permanent coolant which does not need to
be changed. The coolant consists of a mixtu re of
specially conditioned wate r and the manufactur
er's glycol-basedcoolant additive Gl3 antifreeze
with anticorrosion additives (50% for USA mod els; 60% for Canadian models). This mixture both
assures the necessary frost protection and pro
tects metal components in the engine's cooling
system from corrosio n and scaling. It also ra ises
the boiling point of the coolant .
