Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer w ill reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing
the appropriate service on your vehicle. You
a lso have the possibility to reset the oi l
change schedule after having performed an
oil change according to Audi specifications.
Select
I CAR I function button > Systems* con­
trol button >
Service interval display > Reset
oil change interval
or ICARI function button>
Car systems* control button > Servicing &
checks > Service intervals > Reset oil change
interval.
(D Note
- Only reset the o il change d isp lay when
you have completed an oil change.
- If you d isconnect the battery terminals,
no calculations can be made for the serv­
i ce interval display during this time and
no service reminder will appear. Remem­
ber that observing the proper service in­
terva ls is vitally important to extending
the life of your vehicle, particularly the
engine, and maintaining its value. Do not
exceed the time interval for the next
serv ice, even if the vehicle mileage is
low .
(D Tips
The informat ion in the Serv ice Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle bat­
tery is disconnected .
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on
current and average fuel mileage, average
speed, fuel range and driving time.

The following dr iving informa tion is con tinu­
ous ly evaluated by the trip computer and can
be displayed sequentially in the instrument
cluster disp lay.
Fuel range
T he es timated cruis ing range in miles ( km)
appea rs in the display. This tells you how far
your vehicle will be ab le to travel on the c ur­
rent tank of fuel and with the same driving
style. The display changes in increments of
Smiles (10 km).
T he cruising range is calculated based on the
fuel consumption for the last 18 miles
(30 km). If you drive conservative ly, the cruis­
ing range will increase.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel economy in MPG (l/100 km)
since you last cleared the memory appears in
this disp lay. You can use this display to adjust
your driving technique to achieve a desired
mileage.
Current fuel mileage
The instantaneous fuel consumption in m iles
per gallon ( l/100 km) is shown in this display.
You can use this display to adjust your driving
technique to achieve a desired m ileage .

Fue l consumption is reca lculated at interva ls
of 33 yards (30 meters). When the vehicle is
stationary, the most recent fue l consumption
is displayed .
Average speed
The average speed in mph (km/h) since the
l ast time the disp lay was reset appears in the
display .
Elapsed time
The length of time that you have been driving
since you last reset the memory appears in
this display.
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the
l ast time the memory was cleared appears in
the disp lay.

- Fuel consumptions (ave rage and cur­
rent), range and speed are displayed in
metric units on Canadian models.
-All stored va lues w ill be lost if the veh i­
cle battery is disconnected .
Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully
automatic memories as well as an efficiency
program".

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The single-trip memory stores the trip infor­
mation from the time the ignition is turned on
until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was
turned off, the new data will be included in
the calculat ion of the current trip informa­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours
the memory is reset automatically.
Total-trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the single -trip memory, the total -trip
memory is not reset automat ical ly. This per­
mits you to evaluate your driv ing data for the
entire period between manua l resets.

The trip computer is controlled by two
switches on the windshield wiper lever .

The t rip computer w ill not operate unless the
ignition is on. When you turn on the ignition,
the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignit ion off will be d isp layed .
I n addi tion to informa tion abo ut the trip com­
puter (trip computer 1, 2 and the efficiency
prog ram*), information about other systems
can also be shown in the display. To switch the
d isp lay between the d ifferent information,
tap the I RESET! button @ briefly.
Resetting values to z ero
• Se lect a va lue in the desired trip computer
or in the efficiency program* .
• Press and ho ld the I RESE T
I button @for at
least one second. All va lues in the selected
trip computer or in the eff iciency program*
are reset to zero .
If the data in trip compute r 1 are deleted,
then the values in the efficiency program* will
a lso be reset.
W ith some vehicle equipment leve ls, the va l­
ues for the s ingle trip or total tr ip memory
can also be reset in the MMI

All stored values will be lost if the vehicle
battery is disconnected.
MMI settings
Basic settings for the trip computer con be

Other equipment that i s cu rrently affecting
f uel consumption is lis ted in the eff iciency
program . The display shows up to three other
items of equipment @. The equipment using
the most fuel is l isted first. If more than three
items using fue l are switched on, the equ ip­
ment that is currently using the mos t fu el is
d isp layed .
A scale @also shows the current total con­
sumpt io n of all other equ ipment .

Fuel economy messages are displayed when
fuel consumption is inc reased by certain con­
d itions . If you follow these fuel economy mes­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­
tion of fuel. The messages appear automati ­
cally and are o nly displayed in the eff ic iency

automatica lly after a certain period of time .

-Once you have turned a fuel economy

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (M IL) ¢..ij in
the instrument cluster¢
page 14, fig. 8 is
part of the On-Board Diagnos tic (OBD
II) sys­
tem .
The warning/ind icator light ill um inates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine star ts and the id le has stabilized.
This indicates that the M IL is working prope r­
ly .
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started , or illuminates while you are dr iv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys ­
tem . If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Con tinue driving
with reduced powe r (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel ­
erations) and have the cond ition co rrected .

If the light illum inates, the elec tronic speed
limiter may also be malfunctioning . For more

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your emission control system. Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be ident ified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem.
If the light illuminates after a refuelling ,
stop the veh icle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is proper ly closed (on ly vehicles with gaso­
line engine)

In o rder to make an accurate d iagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release

Your author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the
necessary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
ma lfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collis ion!
Electronic speed
limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped w ith
t ir es that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle . To reduce the
risk of sudden tire fa ilure a nd loss of contro l if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an elec tronic speed limit­
er . The e lectronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from going faster than the tire speed
rating . For more information

If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle roadspeed signals, the Malfunction Indica ­
tor Lamp (MIL)
¢4 will illuminate . If this oc­
curs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dealer for assistance.
A WARNING
-
Always observe the posted speed limits
and adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traffic and weather cond itions . Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed.

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previo usly stored maximum
speed . A warning tone wi ll so und as soon as
the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbol appears in the display.
The speed warning system has
two warning
thresholds
that function independently of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­
mum speed while you are driving. This setting "'

will remain in effect until you turn off the igni­
tion, assum ing that you have not changed or
reset the setting.
The speed warning symbol. (USA models)/
• (Canada models) in the warning 1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum
speed . It goes out when the speed falls below
the stored maximum speed.
The speed warning symbo l wi ll also go out if
the speed exceeds the stored maximum speed
by more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at
least 10 seconds. The stored maximum speed
is deleted .

Speed warn ing 2
Storing warn ing 2 is recommended if you al­
ways want to be reminded of a certa in speed ,
for example when you a re traveling in a coun­
try that has a general maximum speed limit,
or if you do not want to exceed a specified
speed for winter tires .
The speed warning 2 symbol, . (U SA mod ­
els)/ . (Canada models) appears in the dis­
p lay when you exceed the stored speed limit.
Unlike warning 1, it will not go out unti l the
ve hicle speed drops below the stored speed
limit.

a speed warning system, you should sti ll
watch the speedometer to make sure you
are not driving faster than the speed lim it.

Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function
of certain veh icle featu res and components . It
simply makes sure these features and compo­ nents are work ing proper ly . The Auto -Check
contro l wo rks as long as the ignition is on, as
well as whenever the vehicle is driven.
If a componen t is ma lf u nctioning or if the
n eed for an urgent repair has been detected,
this will appear in the instrument cluster dis­
p lay . You w ill a lso hear an audible warn ing
tone . The displays are co lor coded in e ither
red or yellow depending on their level of prior­
ity .
A red symbo l means
Dange r, a yellow symbo l
indic ates
Warning . In certain s ituations, in­
formation message for the dr iver appear in
addit ion to the red and yellow symbols.
Function te st : automat ic transmi ssion
The Auto -Check Control will automat ica lly
perform a test each time you switch on the ig­
n ition. With the selector lever in P or N, the
following message appears in the display :
When station ary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
When you select a different gear (for exam ­
p le : R, D, etc.), the message will d isappear
and the Auto-Check function is d isplayed .
I f the re is a m alfu nction, then the malfunc­
tion message w ill appear about 15 seconds af ­
ter the yo u start the vehicle. At t he same time
you will hear a warning tone .
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to the
red and yellow symbols .

For example, if the transmiss ion selec to r l ever
is not in the P position when the engine is
turned off, the following message appears :
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Door s do not l ock if you are not in P .
The ig nition key can only be removed with the
selector in this position . Th is and other mes­
sages are bro ugh t up if a func tion cannot be
carr ied out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appea rs in the display, a d river
message can be shown by pressing the
I CH ECK I button.
For example, the symbo l for a problem w ith
engine oil p ressure . appears in the d isp lay .
If you then p ress the
I CHECK I button , the fol­
lowing dr iver mess age appears in the display:
Switch off engine ! Oil pr essure too low
The driver message in the display goes out af­
ter about 5 seconds . The driver message can
be displayed again by briefly press ing the
I CH ECKi button.

If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a
driver message is also displayed automatical-

For example, the symbol II appears in the
display, indicating low windshield washer flu­
id level. The follow ing message also appears:
Please refill washer fluid
The driver message disappears after a few
seconds. The driver message can be d isp layed
again by briefly pressing the
!CHECK I button.

With a priority 1 malfunction, a large symbol
appears in the center area of the display
¢ fig . 25 . Wh en the symbo l appears, three
warning tones sound in succession. The sym­
bol continues to blink until the malfunct ion
has been repaired.
If there are
more than one priority 1 ma lfunc­
tions, the symbols appear one after the other for about 2 seconds.
An additional driver message can also be dis­
played by briefly pressing the
I CHECK ! button.

0 Alternator malfunction
If the . symbol in the instrument panel dis­
play flashes, then there is a malfunction in the
alternator o r the vehicle elect ronics. A warn­
ing to the driver will appear, too . The driver
warning goes out after about 5 seconds, but it
can be brought up at any time by pressing the
ICHECK I button aga in.
Usually, you can still drive to the next deale r­
ship . Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
trical consumers, since these drain the vehi­
cle's battery.
