Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position.
To avo id contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the fo llow ing manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat in to the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment
range

• Bring the back re st up to an (a lmost) upright
pos ition .
Do not ride with the seat reclined.

senger's seat whi le the vehicle is mov ing .
I f you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. A lways ad just
the driver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition off or with the
ignit ion key removed, never leave chil­
dren unattended in the veh icle. Unsuper­
vised use of the electric seat adjust­ men ts may cause serious injury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden b raking o r accident, front pas­
senge rs must never r ide in a mov ing ve­
hicle with the ba ckrest reclined. Sa fety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection w hen the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of persona l injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts.

Removing the head restraints
• Fold the backrest forward

straint out of the backrest at the same time

Install ing the head restraints
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you feel the posts click
into place .
• Press the button @ and slide the head re­
stra int all the way down. You should not be
able to pull the head restraint out of the
back rest.
So that the driver can have a better view to
the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied.
_& WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a chi ld
seat . Install the head restraint again im ­
mediately once the child seat is removed.
Driving without head restraints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad­
justed increases the risk of serious or fa­
tal neck injury dramatically .

The ashtray can be inserted in one of the two
front cup holders .
• To open the ashtray, lift the lid.
.,. To empty the ashtray, lift it out of the cup
holder . After emptying the ashtray , make
sure that you insert it again so it is seated
securely .
_& WARNING
Never put waste paper in the ashtray. Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray
could set waste paper on fire .

The 12 -volt sockets can be used fo r electr ical
accessories. The power input must not exceed
120 watts.

The power out lets and therefore the elec ­
trical accessories connected to them oper- ate only with the ignit
ion on. Improper use
of the outlets or of electrical accessories
can lead to ser ious injuries or cause a fire.
For this reason, children should never be
l eft unattended in the vehicle -they could
be injured!

Storage
General overview

- When you are dr iving make s ure that

of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have
hung up must not i nterfere with the dr iv­
er's view. The coat hooks are des igned
only for lightweight cloth ing . Never hang
any cloth ing with hard, pointed o r heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hoo ks .

Additional storage
There are a variety of storage compartments
and fasteners in various places in the vehicle .
- In the front center console.
- At the front end of the front seats*. You can
store objects weighing up to 1.5 kg in the
drawer and objec ts weighing up to 1 kg in
the hinged compartment .
- In the door trim.
- Coat hooks next to and above the rear doors.
- Nets* on the backrests of the front seats.
- Coat hooks/retaining hooks in the luggage
compartment.
A WARNING
- When driving, do not leave any hard ob­
jects on the rear window shelf or allow
your pet to sit on the shelf. They could become a hazard for vehicle occupants in
the event of sudden braking or a crash .
- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle while driv ­
ing or when accelerating or when apply­ ing the brakes or when driving around a
corner .
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.
- Any articles of clothing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang

latched so that the safety belt of the cen­

- T he backrest must be secure ly latched in
posi tion so that no items contained in
the luggage compar tment can slide for­
ward upon sudden braking.
- Alw ays che ck whe ther the l atch is f ully
engaged by p ulling the seatback for ­
ward .
- Never allow safe ty belts to be come dam­
aged by being caught in doo r or seat
hardware.
- T orn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash. Inspect the be lts periodically.
Belts showing damage to webbing, bind­
ings, buckles, or retractors must be re­
placed .
(D Note
-If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
cou ld damage the head restraints on the
rear seat.
- Slide the be lt guide on the outside safety
belt all the way up before folding the
backrest back forward. Make sure the
seat belt is not pinched or damaged
when the rear seat backrest if folded
back. Other objects should be removed
from the rear seat bench to protect the sea tback from damage.
Tie-downs and cargo net
Applies to vehicles: with cargo ne t
The cargo net prevents small objects from
sliding.

In a co llision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi ­
cle w ill turn into heavy miss iles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehi cle pick up k i­
neti c energy wh ich var ie s with the veh icle and
t h e weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the
most sig nificant factor.
For example, in a fronta l collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces a cti ng on a
10-lb (5 kg) object are abo ut
20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means t hat

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is eq uipped w ith an automat­
ic belt retractor on the shoulder be lt . T his fea­
ture locks the be lt when the belt is pulled out
fast, dur ing hard bra king and in an acci dent.
The belt may also lock when yo u drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driving the belt lets you move
freely .
Safety belt pret ensioners
The sa fe ty belts are equippe d wi th a be lt pre­
tensioner that helps to tigh ten the safety bel t
and remove s lack when the pretensioner is ac ­
tivated. The function of the pretensioner is
monitored by a warning light

- Neve r attach the safety be lt to t he buck­
le for ano ther sea t. At taching the belt to
the wrong buckle will redu ce s afe ty be lt

sonal injury.
- A passenger who is not properly restrain­
ed can be seriously injured by the safety
be lt itself w hen it moves from the stro n­
ger parts of the body into cr itical areas
like the abdomen .
- Always loc k the convertible locking re­
tractor when you are secu ring a child
safety seat in the vehicle

Damage to the front passenger seat can
prevent the front airbag from working
properly.
- Improper repair or disassembly of the front passenger and driver seat wi ll pre­
vent the Advanced Airbag System from
functioning properly.
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by q ualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never
remove the front passenger or
dr iver seat from the veh icle.
- Never
remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat .
- Never disassemble or
remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it .
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat .
If the weight­
sensing mat in the passenger seat is punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sens ing mat and send the
wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas­ senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Ai r­
bag System under the passenge r seat
cou ld be damaged, prevent ing them and
t h e a irbag sys tem from wo rking proper­
ly .

- Never p lace seat covers or rep lacement
upho lstery that have not been specifica l­
ly approved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat
covers can prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from recognizing chi ld re­
straints or occupants on the front pas­
senger seat and prevent the side airbag
in the seat backrest from deploying prop­
erly.
- Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or similar items on the front passenger
seat. T he additional padding w ill prevent
the we igh t-sensing mat in the sea t from
accurately regis tering the child rest rain t
or pe rson on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function­ ing p roperly.
- If you m ust use a child restraint on the
front passenge r seat and the child re­
straint manufacture r's instructions re­
quire the use of a towel, foam cushion or
someth ing e lse to properly pos ition the
child restraint, make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on whenever the ch ild re­
s traint is i nstalled on the front passen­
ge r seat.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and st ay on, immed i­
ately install child rest raint in a rear seat­
ing position and have the ai rbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
s ide a irbags supp lement the protect ion of­
fered by the front three-point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters a nd the
adjus table head rest rain ts to help reduce the
r isk of in jury in a wide range of accident and
c rash situations . Be s ure to read the impor ­
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in this chapter .

under the upholstery of the seat have been
removed from the front passenger seat,
- a safety be lt extender has not been left in
the safety belt latch for the front passenger seat.
In addition to the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light in the center of the instrument panel,
the message
PASS ENGER AIR B AG O FF or
PAS SENGER AIR B AG ON will briefly appear
in the instrument cluster display . Th is is to in­
form the driver of the current front passenger
a ir bag status .
Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
An airbag system that is not functioning properly cannot provide supplemental pro­
tection in a frontal crash .
- If the airbag indicator l ight

comes when the vehicle is be ing used,
have the system inspected immediately
by you r autho rized Aud i dea ler. It is pos­
sible that the a irbag will inflate when it
is not supposed to, or w ill not inflate
when it sho uld .
A WARNING
If the front airbag inflates , a ch ild without
a child restraint, in a rearward-facing child
safety seat or in a forward-facing chi ld re­
straint that has not been properly insta lled
w ill be seriously injured and can be k illed.
- Even though your veh icle is equipped
with an Advanced Airbag System, make certain that a ll children, especially 12
years and younge r, always ride o n the
back seat properly restrained fo r their
age and si ze.
- Always install forward or rea r-facing
child safety seats on the rear seat - even
with an Advance d Airbag System. A

- If you must install a rearward-facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circumstan­
ces and the
PA SS ENG ER AIR BAG OFF
light does not appear and stay on, imme­
diate ly install the rear-facing child safety
seat in a rea r seat ing pos ition and have
the airbag system inspe cted by your au­
thorized A udi dealer.
- A t ight tether or other strap on a rea r­
ward-facing child restraint attached to
the front passenger seat can p ut too
m uch pressure on the weight-sensing
mat in the seat and registe r more weight
than is actually on the seat. The heavier
weight registered can make the system
work as though an adult were on the seat
and deploy the Advanced Airbag when it
must be suppressed causing ser ious or
even fata l injury to the ch ild.
- If, in exceptiona l circumstances, you
must install a forward-fac ing ch ild re­
straint on the front passenger seat, al­
ways move the seat into its rearmost po­
sition in the seat's fore and aft adjust­
ment range, as far away from the airbag
as possible . The backrest must be adjust­
ed to an upright pos ition. Make sure that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on all the time when­
ever the ignit ion is switched on.
A WARNING

- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not go out when an adult is sitting
on the front passenger sea t after taking
the steps described above, make su re the
adu lt is properly seated and restra ined at
one o f the rear seat ing pos itions.
- Have the airbag system inspected by
your author ized Audi dealer befo re trans­
porting anyone on the front passenger
seat.

If the weight-sensing mat in the front pas­
senger seat detects an empty sea t, the
front airbag on the passenger side wi ll be ..,.
