Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
you r seat prope rly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always follow the informa­
tion rega rd ing child safety provided in
q page 133, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
f eet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion . Th is app lies especially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect,
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
airbag infla tes and the seating position
is incorrect, this could result in personal
injury o r even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel o r inst rument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your sea t may move unexpected ly, caus­
ing sudden loss of vehicle control and
personal injury . If you adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat '
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend tha t you adjus t the dr iver's
seat in the fo llowing manner :
.,. Adjust t he seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can eas ily push the peda ls to the
floor w hile keeping your knees sl igh tly bent

.. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against t he seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as poss ible with the top of your
head . If that is not poss ible , try to adjust
t he head restraint so that it is as close to
t his pos it ion as possib le

A WARNING
Neve r place any objects in the dr iver's foot ­
well. An object could get into the pedal
a rea and interfere with pedal function . In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
would not be able to brake or accelerate .

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position.
To avo id contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the fo llow ing manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat in to the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment

I f you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. A lways ad just
the driver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition off or with the
ignit ion key removed, never leave chil­
dren unattended in the veh icle. Unsuper­
vised use of the electric seat adjust­ men ts may cause serious injury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden b raking o r accident, front pas­
senge rs must never r ide in a mov ing ve­
hicle with the ba ckrest reclined. Sa fety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection w hen the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of persona l injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts.

Adjusting the armrest
.,. To adjust the angle, lift the armrest detent
by detent until the desi red pos ition is
reached.
.,. To bring the armrest back into its original
position, lift it above the top position and
then fo ld it back down.
Please note that the driver's arm movements
may be restricted w ith the armrest fo lded
down. For this reason, the armrest should not
be folded down when driving in city traffic.

The head restraints on the front seats can be
ad justed to provide safe support to head and
neck at the optimum height. When optimally
adjusted, the top of the restraint should be
level with the top of the head . If that is not
possib le, try to adjust the head restraint so
that it is as close to this position as possible

• Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you feel the posts click
into place .
• Press the button @ and slide the head re­
stra int all the way down. You should not be
able to pull the head restraint out of the
back rest.
So that the driver can have a better view to
the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied.
_& WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a chi ld
seat . Install the head restraint again im ­
mediately once the child seat is removed.
Driving without head restraints or with

• To open the ashtray, lift the lid.
.,. To empty the ashtray, lift it out of the cup
holder . After emptying the ashtray , make
sure that you insert it again so it is seated
securely .

Never put waste paper in the ashtray. Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray
could set waste paper on fire .

Please remember -safety first!
This chapter contains important information,
tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others. We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as that of your passengers .
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle. Some of the
feat ures described in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
-Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
your vehicle so that this important info r­
mation will always be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passengers.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find it eas ily if you have
ques tions.
Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
. The following is a list of just a few of
the safety features in your Audi:

- be lt fo rce limi ters fo r the front seats,
- belt p retensioners for the seats,
- be lt he ight adjustment for the front seats,
- head restra ints for each seating posit ion,

- speci al LATCH anchorages for child re-
st raints,
- adjustab le steeri ng colum n.
These ind iv idual safety features, can work to­
gether as a system to help p rotect you and
you r passenge rs in a w ide range of accidents.
T hese features canno t work as a system if
they a re not always corre ct ly adjus ted and co r­
rect ly used.

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occu­
pant safety always depends on the informed
and careful driver.
For you r safety and the safety of your passen­
gers,
b efore driv ing alway s:
.. Make sure that all lights and signals are op­
erati ng correctly .

.. Make s ure that all windows are clean and af­

Important things to know
Importance of wearing safety belts and
sitting properly
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. For
airbags to do their job , occupants must al­
ways properly wear their safety belts and be
in a proper seating position.
F or your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers, before driving off, always:
• Adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel
properly

• Adjust the front passenger's seat properly

• Always properly use the proper child re-
straint to protect children

In a collision airbags must inflate within the
blink of an eye and with considerable force.
The supplemental airbags can cause injuries if
the driver or the front seat passenger is not
seated properly . Therefore in order to help the
a ir bag to do its job, it is important, both as a
d river and as a passenge r to sit properly at all
times.
By keeping room between your body and the
steering wheel and the front of the passenger
compa rtment, the airbag can inflate fully and
comp letely and provide supplemental protec­
tion in certain frontal collisions

properly restrained

There is a lot that the driver and the passen­
gers can and must do to help the individual
safety features installed in your Audi work to­
gether as a system.
Proper seating pos ition is important so that
the front airbag on the driver side can do its
job. If you have a physical impairment or con- dition that prevents you
from sitting properly
on the driver seat with the safety belt properly
fastened and reaching the pedals, spec ial
modifications to your vehicle may be necessa­
ry.

Audi Customer Re lations at 1-800-822-2834.
When the airbag system dep loys , a gas gener­
ator will fi ll the airbags, break open the pad­
ded covers, and inflate between the steering
whee l and the driver and between the instru­
ment panel and the front passenger. The air­
bags will deflate immediately after deploy­
ment so that the front occupants can see
th rough the windshield aga in without inter­
ruption .
All of th is takes place in the blink of an eye, so
fast that many people don't even realize that
the a irbags have deployed . The airbags also
inflate with a great deal of force and nothing
should be in their way when they deploy.
Front airbags in combination with properly
worn safety belts slow down and limit the oc­
cupant's forward movement. Together they
help to prevent the driver and front seat pas­
senger from hitting parts of the inside the ve­
hicle while reducing the forces acting on the
occupant dur ing the crash. In this way they
help to reduce the risk of injury to the head
and upper body i n the crash . A irbags do not
protect the arms or the lower parts of the
body.
Both front a irbags will not inflate in all fronta l
collisions . The trigge ring of the a irbag system
depends on the vehicle dece lerat ion rate
caused by the collision and registered by the
elect ron ic control unit. If th is rate is below
the reference value programmed into the con­
trol unit, the airbags will not be triggered ,
even though the car may be bad ly damaged as
a result of the collision . Veh icle damage, re­
pair costs or even the lack of veh icle damage
is no t necessarily an indication of whether an
airbag should inflate or not.
It is not possib le to define a range of vehicle
speeds that w ill cover every possible kind and .,.

-Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat in exceptional circumstances and
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not come on and stay on, immediately
install the rear-facing child safety seat in
a rear seating position and have the air­
bag system inspected immediately by
your Audi dealer.
_& WARNING
If, in exceptional circumstances, you must
install a forward-facing child restraint on
the front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing
seat has been designed and certified by
its manufacturer for use on a front seat
with a passenger front and side airbag.
- Always follow the manufacturer's in­
structions provided with the child safety
seat or carrier.
- Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible before installing
the child restraint. The backrest must be
adjusted to an upright position .
- Always make sure that the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays
on all the time whenever the ignition is
switched on.
(D Tips
Always replace child restraints that were
installed in a vehicle during a crash. Dam­
age to a child restraint that is not visible
could cause it to fail in another collision
situation.
Advanced front airbag system and children
Your vehicle is equipped with a front "Ad­
vanced Airbag System" in compliance with United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 208 as applicable at the
time your vehicle was manufactured.
The Advanced Airbag system in your vehicle
has been certified to meet the "low-risk" re­
quirements for 3- and 6-year old children on
the passenger side and small adults on th e
driver side. The low ris k deployment criteria
are intended to reduce the risk of injury
through interact ion with the airbag t hat can
occur, for example, by being too close to the
steering wheel and instrument panel when
the airbag inflates . In addition, the system
has been certified to comply with the "sup­
pression" requirements of the Safety Stand­
ard, to turn off the front airbag for infants up
to 12 months who are restrained on the front
passenger seat in child restraints that are list­
ed in the Standard.
Even though your vehicle is equipped with an
Advanced Airbag system , all children, espe­
cially those 12 years and younger, should al­
ways ride in the back seat properly restrained
for their age and size. The airbag on the pas­
senger side makes the front seat a potentially
dangerous place for a child to ride . The front
seat is not the safest place for a child in a for­
ward-facing child safety seat. It can be a very
dangerous place for an infant or a larger child
in a rearward-facing seat .
Advanced Airbags and the weight­
sensing mat in the front seat
The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle
detects the presence of an infant or child in a
child restraint on the front passenger seat us­
ing the weight-sensing mat in the seat cush ­
ion and the sensor below the safety belt latch
on the front passenger seat that measures the
tension on the safety belt.
The weight -sensing mat measures total
weight of the child and the child safety seat
and a child blanket on the front passenger
seat. The weight on the front passenger seat
is related to the design of the child restraint
and its "footprint", the size and shape of the
bottom of the child restraint as it sits on the .,..

Bulbs
Replacing bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for you.
It is becoming increas ingly more and more
difficult to replace vehicle lig ht bulbs s ince in
many cases, other parts of the car must first
be removed before you are able to get to the bulb.
This applies especially to the light bulbs
in the front of your car which you can only
reach through the engine compartment.
Sheet meta l and bulb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, parts must
be correct ly taken apart and then properly put
back together to he lp prevent breakage of
parts and long term damage from water that
can enter housings that have not been proper­
ly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authori zed Audi dea ler replace any bulbs
for you, since your dealer has the proper tools,
the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (Xenon lights ):
Due to the high e lectr ica l voltage, have the
bulbs replaced by a qualified technician.
Headlights with Xenon light are identified by
the high voltage st icker.
A WARNING "--
Changing Xenon lamps without the neces-
sary equipment can cause serious persona l
injury.
- Bulbs are pressurized and can explode
when being changed. Potential risk of in­
jury!
- On veh icles equipped with gas discharge
bulbs (Xenon light) life-threatening inju­
ries can result from improper handling of
the high-voltage portions of such lamps!
- Only your authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop should change the
bu lbs in gas discharge lamps. There are
pa rts with sharp edges on the openings
and on the bulb holders that can cause
serious cuts. If you are uncertain about
what to do, have the work performed by
an authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop. Serious personal injury may
result from improperly performed work.
