- If you d isconnect the battery term inals,
no calculatio ns can be made for the serv­
ice interval display during this time and
no service rem inder will appear . Remem­
ber that observing the proper service in­
tervals is vitally important to extending
the life of you r vehicle, particularly the
engine, and maintaining its value. Even if
the mileage dr iven is low, the max imum
period of one year from one serv ice to
the next must not be exceeded.
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Ind icator Lamp (MIL) ¢'4 i n
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ign ition is switched on and goes o ut after
the engine starts and the idle has stabilized.
Th is indicates that the MIL is working proper­
l y.
If the light doe s not go out after the eng ine
is started, or illuminates wh ile you are driv­
ing, a ma lfunction may exist in the engine sys­
tem . If the light illuminates, the catalytic con ­
verter cou ld be damaged.
Continue driving
w ith reduced pow er (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer .
If the light ill uminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be ma lfunctioning . For more
information

On-Board D iagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your em ission contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been ass igned a code . In case of a mal­
funct ion, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memo ry.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a lea k in the on-board fuel vapor recove ry sys­
tem . If the ligh t illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel fille r
cap is prope rly closed (only vehicles w ith gaso­
line engine) ¢

In order to make a n accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can on ly be displayed using spe­
c ial d iagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD).
In order to con nect t he special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug in to the Data Link
Connector (D LC). The D LC is located to the
right o f the hood release

Warm and cold Climate control
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the a ir in the veh icle inter io r.
It is the most effect ive when the windows and
sunroof are closed . If the re is a build-up of
h eat inside the vehicle, ventilation can help to
speed up the cooling process .
Condensat ion from the cooling sys tem can
drip and form a puddle of water under the ve­
hicle. This is normal and does not mean there
is a leak .
Pollution filter
The po llution filte r removes impuri ties, such
as dus t and po llen, from the air.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at
the intervals spec ified in you r Wa rra nty
&
M aintenance book let, so tha t the air condi­
tioner can prope rly work .
If you drive your vehicle in an area with h igh
a ir po llution, the fi lter may need to be
changed more frequent ly than specified in
your Aud i Warr anty
& Ma intenance booklet. If
in doubt, ask your authorized A udi Service Ad ­
visor for advice .
A WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangero us and can
cause accidents.

- For safe dr iv ing it is very important that
all windows be free of ice, snow and con­
densation.

how to defog and defrost the w indows.
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer
system in freez ing weather unt il you
have warmed the w indshield first, using

washer sol ution may freeze on the wi nd­
shie ld and re duce visib ility.

0 Adjusting the temperature
Separate temperatures can be selected for the
driver's and front passenger's side using the
left and right rotary controls . The tempera­
ture can be adjusted between +60
°F (+16 °C)
and +84 °F (+28 °C) . Outside this range, LO or
HI will appear on the air conditioner display .
In the two extreme settings the air condition­
er operates continuously with maximum cool­
ing or heating output, and the temperature is
not regulated automatically.

You can adjust the volume of air delivery man­
ually to suit your individual requirements.
Press the
IAUTOI button for automatic blower
regulat ion .

You can direct the flow of air manually to se­
lected outlets. The buttons can be operated
e ither separately or in combination . Press the
IAUTOI button for automat ic air distribution.
J Adjusting the seat heating
When you press the button, the seat heating
is switched on at level 3 (the highest level) .
The LEDs indicate the temperature level. To
reduce the temperature, press the button
again . T o switch off the seat heating, press
the button repeatedly unti l all the LEDs have
gone out.
The seat heating automatically switches from level 3 to level 2 after 10 minutes .
I@ F RON T! Switching the defroster on/off
The windscreen and s ide windows are defrost­
ed or demisted as quickly as possible . The air
output is increased to maximum and most of
the air comes out of the outlets below the
windscreen . The air recirculation mode is de­
activated. The temperature should be set to
+ 72
°F (22 °() or higher.
The defroster is switched off when the

heating on/off
The rear window heating operates only when
the engine is running and switches off auto ­
matically after about 10 minutes.
Synchronisat ion
By pressing and ho lding the IAU TO j button,
you can set the temperature of the front pas­
senger's side to the temperature of the driv­
er's side. The synchronisation is deactivated as
soon as the temperature on the front pas­
senger's s ide is changed .
Air outlets
The thumbwhee ls can be used to open and
close the air outlets in the center and on ei­
ther side of the dashboard and rear center
console . The lever in the center of the outlets
can be used to adjust the direction of air flow.
Changing the temperature units
The temperature display can be switched be­
tween
° F and 0C. Press and hold the 1- ·1 but­
ton ¢
fig. 72 and turn the rotary control on
the driver's s ide to+ for 3 seconds.
A WARNING
- Do not use the recirculation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog
up since no fresh air can enter the vehi­
cle. If the windows fog up, press the air
recir culation button again immediately
to switch off the air recirculation func­
tion or se lect defrost .
- Individ uals w ith reduced sensitivity to
pain or temperature could develop burns
when using the seat heating function. To
red uce the risk of injury, these individu­
als should not use seat heating .

To avoid damage to the heating elements
in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condi­
tion of the vehicle , the driver as well as the
driver's ability to concentrate on the road
without being distracted .
The driver is responsible for the safety of the
vehicle and all of its occupants. If your ability
to drive is impaired, safety r isks for everybody
in the vehicle increase and you a lso become a
hazard to everyone else on the road

gers or by using a cellular telephone .
.. NEVER drive when yo ur driving ability is im­
paired (by medicat ions, alcohol, drugs, etc.).

.. ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic
and weather conditions .
.,. Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not
drive for more than two hours at a stretch.

The proper driver seating position is impor­
tant for safe, relaxed driving.

For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the driver's seat to the
follow ing pos ition:
.. Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easi ­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
wh ile keeping your knee(s) slightly bent

.. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upr ight position so that your back
comes in full contact w ith it when you drive.
.. Adjust the steering wheel so that th ere is a
distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween the steering wheel and yo ur breast

to reduce the risk of injury when the vehi­
cle is not be ing used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open . A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get out. Be ing trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious persona l injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehicle .
- Never let passe ngers r ide in the luggage
compartment . Ve hicle occupants must
always be properly restrained in one of
the vehicle's seating positions.

- Air c irculation helps to reduce window
fogging. Sta le air escapes to the outside
th rough vents in the trim pane l. Be su re
to keep these slots free and open.
- The t ire pressure must correspond to the
load. The t ire pressur e is shown o n the
tire p ress ure label. The tire pressure la­
bel is loc ated on the d river's s ide B-pi ll a r.
The t ire pressure label lists the recom­
mended cold ti re inflat ion pressu res for
the vehicle at its maximum capacity
weig ht and the tires that were on you r
vehicle at the time it was manufactured.
For recommended t ire pressures fo r nor­
mal load conditions, please see chap ter
c:>page 199.
Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with
four tie-downs to secure luggage and other
items .
Use the tie-downs to secure your cargo prop­
erly

In a coll is ion, the laws of phys ics mean that
even smalle r items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will become heavy missiles that can cause

serious injury. Items in the ve hicle possess en ­
ergy which vary with vehicle speed and the
weight o f the item . Vehicle speed is the most
s ignificant factor.
Fo r example, in a fronta l collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10 -lb (5 kg) object a re about 20 times the
no rmal weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item would sudden ly be
about 200 lbs. (90 kg) . You can imag ine the
i njur ies that a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying
fr eely th ro ugh the passenger compar tme nt
c ould cause in a co lli sion like this.
A WARNING
We ak, dam aged or improper str aps used
to secure items to tie -downs can fail dur­
ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury .
-Always use s uita ble mount ing stra ps and
properly secu re items to the tie-downs in
the l uggage compa rtme nt to he lp pre­
vent items from shift ing or f ly ing fo r­
ward as dangerous missiles .
-When the rea r seat backrest is folded
down, a lways use suitable mounting
straps and properly secure items to the
tie-downs in the luggage compartment
to hel p prevent items from fly ing for­
ward as dangerous missiles into the pas­
s enger compartment.
- Never attach a chi ld safety seat te th er
strap to a t ie- down .

A person on the front passenger seat, es­
pecially infants and small children, will re­
ceive serious injur ies and can even be kil­
led by being too close to the airbag when
it inflates.
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the
front passenger a irbag if an infant or a
small ch ild is on the front passenge r
seat, nobody can absolutely guarantee
that deployment under these special
conditions is impossible in all conceiva­
ble s ituations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The Advanced A irbag System can deploy
in accordance with the "low risk" opt ion
under the U.S. Federa l Standard if a c hild
that is heavier than the typical one-year
old child is o n the front passenger seat
and the other cond itions for airbag de­
ployment are met .
- Acc ident statist ics have shown that chil­
dre n are generally safe r in the rea r seat
area than in the front seating posit io n.
- For their own safety, all children, espe­
cially 1 2 yea rs and younger, sho uld al­
ways ride in the b ack properly restrained
for their age and size .
Advanced front airbag system
-
Your vehicle is equipped w it h a front Advanced
Airbag System in comp liance with United
States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was
manufactured.
The front Advanced Airbag System supp le ­
ments the safety belts to provide additiona l
protection for the driver's and front passeng­
er's heads and upper bodies in frontal crashes.
The airbags inflate only in frontal impacts
when the vehicle decelerat io n is high enough .

The front Advanced Airbag System for the
front seat occupants is not a substitute for
your safety be lts . Rather, it is part of the over­
all occupant restra int system in your vehicle.
Always remember that the airbag system can
only he lp to protect you, if you are sitting up ­
rig ht, wearing your safety belt and wear ing it
proper ly. This is why you and your passe ngers
mus t always be prope rly restrained, not jus t
because the law req uires you to be.
T he Advanced A irbag System in your vehicle
has been ce rtified to meet the "low risk" re­
quirements for 3 and 6 yea r-old ch ildren o n
the passenger side and very small ad ults o n
the driver side . The low risk deployment crite­
ria are intended to help reduce the risk o f in ­
jury through interaction with the front airbag that can occur, for example, by being too
close to the steering wheel and instrument
panel when the airbag inflates.
In addition, the system has been certified to
comply with the "s uppression" requirements
of the Safety Standard, to turn off the front
airbag for infants
12 months old and younger
who are restrained on the front passenger
seat in child rest raints that are listed in the
Standard ¢
page 135, Child restraints and
Advanced Airbags.
"Suppress ion" requires the front a irbag on the
passenger side to be turned off if:
- a child up to about one year of age is re­
strained on the front passenger seat in one
of the rear -fac ing or forward-facing infant
restrai nts listed in Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard 208 with which the Ad­
vanced Ai rbag System in your ve hicl e was
cert ified . For a listing of t he chi ld res traints
tha t were used to certify you r vehicle's com ­
pliance with the US Safety Standard

-weight less than a thresho ld level stored in
the control unit is detected on the front pas­
senger seat .
When a person is detected on the front pas­ senger seat, weighing more than the total
weight of a chi ld that is about 1 year old •

restrained in one of the rear -facing or for­
ward -facing infant restraints (listed in Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with which
the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle
was certified), the front airbag on the passen­
ger side may or may not dep loy .
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
when the electronic control unit detects a to­
tal weight on the front passenger seat that re­
quires the front airbag to be turned off . If the
P A SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on, the front airbag on the passenger
side has not been turned off by the control
un it and can deploy if the contro l unit senses
an impact that meets the conditions stored in
its memory .
I f the total we ight on the front passenger
seat is more than that of a typical
1 year-o ld,
but less than the weight of a small adu lt, the
front airbag on the passenger side may deploy
(the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on).
F o r e xample , th e ai rbag m ay depl oy if:
-a small child that is heavier than a typical 1
year-o ld child is on the front passenger seat
(regardless of whether the ch ild is in one of
the chi ld safety seats listed
¢ page 135),
-a ch ild who has o utgrown child rest raints is
on the front passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag is turned off, the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light in the center
of the instrument pa nel w il l come on and stay
on.
The front a irbag on the passenger side may
not deploy (the PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not ill uminate and stay lit) if:
- a small adult or teenager is on the front pas ­
senger seat
- a passenger who is not sitt ing upright with
their back against a non-reclined backrest
with their feet on the veh icle floo r in front
of the seat is on the fro nt passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag deploys, the Federal Standard requires the airbag to meet
the "low risk" deployment cr iteria to help re- duce the risk o
f injury through interaction
with the airbag . "Low risk" deployment occurs
in those crashes that take place at lower de­
ce lerat ions as defined in the electronic control
unit.¢

Alw ays remembe r: Even though your vehicle
is equ ipped w ith Advanced A irbags, the safest
place for ch ildren is properly restrained on the
back seat . Please be sure to read the impor­
tant information in the sections that follow and be su re to heed all of the WARNINGS.

- If you are unrestra ined, leaning forward,
sitt ing s ideways or out of pos ition in any
way, your risk of injury is m uch h igher.
- You will a lso receive serious injuries and
could even be killed if you a re up aga inst
the airbag o r too close to it when it in­
f lates - even with an Advanced A irbag
¢ page 112.
A WARNING

A child in a rearward -facing chi ld safety
seat installed on the front passenger seat
will be serious ly injured and can be killed if
the front airbag inflates -even with an Ad­
vanced A irbag System.
-Altho ugh the Advanced Airbag System in
your veh icle is designed to turn off the
front airbag when a rearward-facing
child restraint has been installed on the
front passenge r seat, nobody can abso­
lutely g uarantee that dep loyment is im­
possible in all con ceivable situations that
may happen dur ing the usefu l life of your
vehicle .
- The infla ting airbag will h it the c hild
safety seat or infant carrier wi th great
force and will smash the child safety seat and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door, or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing chi ld re­
straints in the back seat .
