Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position.
To avo id contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the fo llow ing manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat in to the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment
range

Do not ride with the seat reclined.

I f you do this while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. A lways ad just
the driver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition off or with the
ignit ion key removed, never leave chil­
dren unattended in the veh icle. Unsuper­
vised use of the electric seat adjust­ men ts may cause serious injury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden b raking o r accident, front pas­
senge rs must never r ide in a mov ing ve­
hicle with the ba ckrest reclined. Sa fety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection w hen the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of persona l injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts.

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and bock .

First, adjust the driver's seat correctly .
• Pull the lever

• Move the steer ing whee l to the desired posi­
t ion.
• Push the lever against the steering column
until it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­ tween your chest and the center of the steer­
ing wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steering wheel.

A WARNING
Improper use of steeri ng wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause serious personal injury.
- Adjust the steering whee l co lumn on ly
when the veh icle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that there is a minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel

yo u cannot mainta in this min imum dis- tance, the airbag system cannot protect
you proper ly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from
sitting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from
the steering wheel, check with your au­
thorized Audi dealer to see if adaptive equ ipment is ava ilable .
- If the steer ing wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steeri ng wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub . Holding the steering wheel
the wrong way can cause serious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.

hicle can be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures .

-If it is difficult to turn the ignition key to
posit ion ©, move the steering wheel (to
take the load off the steer ing lock mech­
anism) until the key turns freely.
-After starting a cold engine, there may be a brief period of increased no ise be­
cause the oil pressure must f irst bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.

ger than two seconds .

full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed. You

brake as you usually would, this could

Changing speed

You can press the acce lerator pedal down to
increase your speed, for example if you want
to pass someone. The speed you saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­

I f, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5
mph (10 km/h) for longer than 6 minutes, the
cr uise contro l turns off temporarily. The

light in the instrument cluster turns off and
the stored speed is retained.
Preselecting the speed
You con preselect your desired speed when
the vehicle is stationary.

A WARNING
-You should only resume the stored speed if
i t is not too high for existing traffic condi­
tions. Otherwise you risk an accident.
(D Tips
-If the brakes become too heated while
dr iving, the cruise control switches off.
If
this happens while driving downhill, you
can relieve the brakes by shifting into a
lower gear.

Automatic
transmission
tiptronic
Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economica l
driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually
(tiptronic mode) o page 84.
In the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter .

P- Park
In this selector lever posit ion the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only

T o shift in or out of position P, yo u must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
wh ile moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of th is position only with the
ignition on.
R -Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed¢.&. in
Driving the automatic transmission on
page 83.
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le of the selector
l ever
and the brake pedal at the same time .
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position.
Shift to this position for standing with the
brakes applied

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the footbrake before and whi le moving the
lever out of
N.
D/S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the norma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back. Pulling the lever
back again will select the normal mode D. The
instrument cluster display shows the selected
driv ing mode .
In the normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the sport mode S for sporty driving.
